21.01.2022 Strange times indeed. . Amid the chaos and uncertainty, there have been two things that stand out as special to protect and encourage. . One is education.... . Not just the traditional form in schools, universities and colleges , but also social education - looking after the more vulnerable elements of society - and personal education and self-reflection - checking in on where we are, what we have, what we want and how they all match up. . The other is health. . Globally, exercise and healthy eating have been encouraged and enshrined as a way to combat the current situation. . Wed call that pretty good general life advice , but at times like this, it hits home a bit harder and we realise that not everyone is equipped to know what that is or how to incorporate it into their day-to-day. . Weve seen a huge spike in students asking about our online courses (feel free to look them up!), and we know learning online is a safe, convenient and often more cost-effective route. . We also firmly believe that our industry is people-centric. Human interaction, live, up-close and personal is a key element in motivation, explanation, demonstration and consistency. . To that end we will ALWAYS encourage our students to come to our live practical classes and CEC courses as well as exploring our online options. . Did you know I am a strength and conditioning coach as well as a PT? I gained my @the_asca level 1 qualification through @rob_burr_afhp and the @theafhp while studying my certification to be a pt! I train various athletes in different codes from, rugby union, rugby league, rugby 7’s, netball, basketball and cricket through various stages of their season, from pre season prep, in season, and post season, working on strength, running mechanics, conditioning techniques and various other exercises/drills/sessions to have them ready to play at their best! It’s always great to see how much the guys and girls change through their training, gaining more confidence in the gym, getting stronger and getting fitter in general! Want to know more? 14.01.2022 Full stop. . It doesnt matter what were talking about specifically. . Study. Work. Exercise. Nutrition.... . The bottom line is that you have to actually DO something. . Sometimes our clients talk a great game. . I used to have one that literally tried to start a conversation they knew Id be into, just so they could get a rest! (Watch out for those ones ) . So even if you only see someone once a week, your influence needs to reach way beyond that session. . You have to help them move from deliberation to action - even if youre not there physically. . Ultimately everyone wants the same thing - progress and success for your client! . Part of the game is making sure they DO enough to make that change. . Make a plan. . Stick to the plan (unless you have to change it!) . Create accountability- for yourself and your clients. . Its designed to give an indication of whether you have a healthy weight for your height, which can be indicative of health risks. . Its not perfect. It doesnt take into account whether the weight constitutes lean or fat mass, which means more muscular sports people can often fall into the overweight or even obese category.... . But its a pretty good indicator, along with a lifestyle questionnaire, of where someone might be at, its easy to do and fast to feedback! . 10.01.2022 Anatomy and physiology. . Even saying it is a mouthful! . For lots of our students this is a whole new world - new words, new definitions, prefixes from a dead language!... . Unfortunately we cant change the names of bones, muscles and organic systems. . But what we CAN do try and help it make sense . Its the foundation of our industry and without a good understanding of it, we have absolutely no chance of designing a good exercise program! . But the good thing thing is it doesnt change. . A thigh bone will always be called a femur. . Your guns will always be your biceps . So take the time to learn and understand anatomy and physiology. . Emerging Athletes are offered 3 fully coached and supervised sessions per week with our experienced Strength & Conditioning Coaches, Rob Burr, Michael Krog & Jim Stubbs.... Our program is designed for youth and adolescents aged 13-19. 07.01.2022 YAWN! . Whenever we start talking about scope of practice in a classroom we see the eyes roll and the shoulders drop. . But heres how we view it. ... . We dont (like lots of people), see it as a limitation on what we do. . Were not doctors - dont want to be. . Were not Physiotherapists - dont want to be. . Were not clinically trained in dietetics or nutrition - in 90% of cases, dont need to be! . Clients often think we have all the answers and we can get drawn into pretending to be the expert on all things health! . Instead, we see scope of practice as the way we can keep focussed on the stuff we enjoy and the stuff we are good at! . Exercise, motivation, health screening, fitness testing, program design, strength and conditioning, good old fashioned healthy eating (no fad diets here please)... . There are LOADS of things we can (and should be), be experts at. . Find a great support group of Allied Health Professionals and let them be the experts at what they do. . Then enjoy the freedom of being the expert at what YOU do . 07.01.2022 Certificate IV in Fitness Year 12 students progressing nicely through their course this year despite a small COVID standdown. All practical clinics are now in full swing and the students have progressed onto Functional Movement screening. A little stability to work on for some!

06.01.2022 Are you and your clients on the same wavelength? . Sometimes we can get carried away with all the possibilities we see for our clients. . To the trained eye, you can clearly see what they need to change. What exercise they need to do and what diet changes they need to make.... . So we design an amazing program. We can practically SEE the future them! . So we sit down and explain what were going to do for them and how great thats going to be. . Sometimes we might be right on the money and your client embraces the changes and the plan and off you ride into the sunset. . And sometimes...its a straight up nope - thats not gonna work for me. . The point here is that whether you like it or not, youre in a relationship with your client. And that means they need to have input and feel heard so they can take ownership of the program. . Remember - its THEIR program. Youre providing the expertise and advice to help them make the right changes, in the right way, at the right time. . The best results come when people are intrinsically motivated to achieve them. The trainers job is to help find where that motivation comes from and to help design the journey that inspires and excites as well as succeeds. .
