21.01.2022 Weve just added some fresh new jewellery designs from our fave designer @createdbyculture @createdbyculture design and create quality jewellery pieces using traditional glass beads sourced from Ghana. The glass beads are made from recycled glass bottles that would otherwise go to landfill. After sorting by colour, the glass bottles are pounded with a metal mortar and pestle, and sieved to get a very fine powder. The powder is compressed together then baked in a furnace causi...ng the glass to melt together and the bead is formed. Each bead is then individually hand-painted to add further vibrancy and dimension. Bead making is a traditional craft handed down by generations and forms an important part of Ghanaian culture. 15.01.2022 Today I write through the lens of a Mother to brown children. Feeling the intense energy and deep pain across the globe. Trying to process these events, the social media trend to post black squares, to process my feeling of hopelessness against my need to protect my children. I needed to reflect, delve deeper into these emotional triggers and figure out how I can take action. Not just for the sake of my children but to help others who may also be feeling in a similar state. ... It has led to me uncovering my own ignorance and naivety around white privilege and racism. From someone who shares in a business with principles around educating our children on diversity and breaking African stereotypes, I feel the need to share my experience facing these uncomfortable emotions in the hope that I can help others take the step to also challenge their own conditioning and programming. 14.01.2022 Coconut Trees Am I the only one that didnt know that a coconut tree grows from a coconut?! LOL For all the time we have been in Ghana, I only just noticed these coconuts ready for planting that are literally sprouting from a coconut! So if you are after a beautiful coconut tree all you need to do is find a coconut - the coconut should still have its husk on and have plenty of water inside so shake to tell.... Pop the coconut in a bucket of warm water - use something heavy to keep it submerged for 3-4 days. This will help the germination process. Seal the coconut in a plastic bag with a cup of water and store in a warm, dark place. Check on your coconut baby weekly as could take anywhere between a few weeks to 3 months to start sprouting (yep this is no quick process!) When you spot the roots starting to grow, wrap them in a towel. Once they are about 15-20cm in length you are ready to transfer to soil. Sandy soil works best and plant in a spot where it will receive maximum sun. Plant them pointy side down. Then watch your coconut baby grow! Takes 5-6 years before they produce coconuts. So there you have it - your lesson on how to grow your own coconut tree! 13.01.2022 WOW this week has been huge - we are BLOWN AWAY by the number of doll sales we have had this past week. A big thank you to everyone who has shared about our dolls across instagram and facebook. We cannot thank you enough!! The sales > just this weekend alone < have raised over $1,000 for @ayicentres and will go towards covering things like staff wages, electricity, internet, stationery and books to the kids that come to the youth centre in Teshie, Ghana. So thank you for... helping us to provide a means of further education and support to our underserved communities. However! this huge influx in orders, while so so awesome, has been a complete and utter surprise and has just so happened to coincide with the week of our move to a bigger warehouse! Of course this is the way of the world! Always testing us! Our team based in Sydney is super small and are doing their best to rearrange stock in the new warehouse, get systems re-installed and packing orders when they can. FYI The Dolls clothes are made in Ghana using african wax print fabrics but they are out of stock due to Covid.... I think youll be pleased to know that Adinkra Designs works with a lovely school - that take in girls who have low skills and live in poverty, a lot are what are called "Kayayei" -They are usually poor girls from the northern part of Ghana who travel down to Accra to get work and they end up living like slaves virtually. They work in the markets and use these great huge metal bowls that get full of peoples shopping and they carry them on their head and get paid a few cents for it- its very hard labour for next to no pay under the beating African sun. So this school takes them in and retrains them to be seamstresses. We like to support them and give them all our sewing work. We are getting them to sew our bassinet sheets and dolls clothes. They are working on a lining for the moses baskets, new soft toys and bedding for the dolls baskets.

Weavers have created their own tools using the sole of a shoe - we call them "Thong" in Australia, they are commonly called "Chale Wote" in Ghana. The fibres are rolled to create a double twisted strand.
