24.01.2022 The Four Agreements ~ by Don Miguel Ruiz

23.01.2022 Parents and teachers, the website superdville.com has some fabulous videos and resources for supporting social and emotional wellbeing with children aged 7 to 12, especially those who have learning differences... and they’re currently free to access!

23.01.2022 "What would my mum think of that?" "In a race, athlete Abel Mutai representing Kenya, was just a few feet from the finish line, but he was confused with the signage & stopped thinking he had completed the race. The Spanish athlete, Ivan Fernandez was right behind him & realizing what was happening, he started shouting at the Kenyan for him to continue running; but Mutai didn't know Spanish and didn't understand. Then the Spanish pushed him to victory. A journalist asked Iva...n, "Why did you do that?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life". The journalist insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win". The journalist insisted again, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him & replied, "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honour of that medal? What would my mum think of that?" Values are transmitted from generation to generation. What values are we teaching our children? Let us not teach our kids the wrong ways & means to WIN" https://lnkd.in/dZiMmZm Via @Birad Rajaram Yajnik on FB

23.01.2022 ADHD beautifully explained... Take my hand and come with me, I want to teach you about ADHD. I need you to know, I want to explain,... I have a very different brain. Sights, sounds, and thoughts collide. What to do first? I can't decide. Please understand I'm not to blame, I just can't process things the same. Take my hand and walk with me, Let me show you about ADHD. I try to behave, I want to be good, But I sometimes forget to do as I should. Walk with me and wear my shoes, You'll see its not the way I'd choose. I do know what I'm supposed to do, But my brain is slow getting the message through. Take my hand and talk with me, I want to tell you about ADHD. I rarely think before I talk, I often run when I should walk. It's hard to get my school work done, My thoughts are outside having fun. I never know just where to start, I think with my feelings and see with my heart. Take my hand and stand by me, I need you to know about ADHD. It's hard to explain but I want you to know, I can't help letting my feelings show. Sometimes I'm angry, jealous, or sad. I feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and mad. I can't concentrate and I lose all my stuff. I try really hard but it's never enough. Take my hand and learn with me, We need to know more about ADHD. I worry a lot about getting things wrong, Everything I do takes twice as long. Everyday is exhausting for me... Looking through the fog of ADHD. I'm often so misunderstood, I would change in a heartbeat if I could. Take my hand and listen to me, I want to share a secret about ADHD. I want you to know there is more to me. I'm not defined by it, you see. I'm sensitive, kind and lots of fun. I'm blamed for things I haven't done. I'm the loyalist friend you'll ever know, I just need a chance to let it show. Take my hand and look at me, Just forget about the ADHD. I have real feelings just like you. The love in my heart is just as true. I may have a brain that can never rest, But please understand I'm trying my best. I want you to know, I need you to see, I'm more than the label, I am still me!!!! By Andrea Chesterman-Smith

21.01.2022 This article brilliantly highlights why ALERT’s systematic synthetic phonics, in combination with its morphological and etymological spelling program, improves reading accuracy immeasurably. ALERT’s methodology makes 96% of words predictable rather than guessable. Fingers crossed that articles like this will help more educators and parents realise the detrimental effect of the unsystematic balanced literacy methods that still exist in so many schools.

20.01.2022 Evidence-based reading instruction i.e. synthetic phonics helps every reader and hinders none. I truly hope educators realise soon that the way reading is currently being taught in most schools compromises too many children.

20.01.2022 A great explanation for parents who are told their children have gone up a level in the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment. So, what does it truly mean? Put simply, not much! The assessment involves observing behaviours not measuring skills, and its levelling system doesn’t present children with authentic, challenging texts.

19.01.2022 How wonderful that during these crazy times children with learning differences are having positive opportunities Lockdown has let me discover, like an intrepid explorer, my hidden talents... and see that through my hidden talent of art and creativity it's possible for me to fly with my own magnificent wings.

17.01.2022 Please help prevent bigotry becoming condoned through children’s education. If passed, this Bill will require teachers to teach discredited counter narratives that promote judgment and hatred. Most heinously, this Bill intends to stop teachers from supporting the wellbeing of every young trans and gender diverse student and to challenge their accreditation if they do.... You can oppose this damaging bill by filling out this survey: tiny.cc/EducationQ

17.01.2022 This is a wonderful article about UK journalist Kate Lister’s life experience before and after being diagnosed with ADHD at age 35.

15.01.2022 The Reading League’s checklist is a great way to work out how closely your school’s curriculum aligns with the science of reading which helps all children read proficiently

15.01.2022 Pretty much every book I have ever loved has played a part in building mental resilience, because every great one offers us a way not just to escape our own mind but to expand it. Yet there are particular books you come across at the right time that really offer the advice you need, to help fortify those mental defences.

14.01.2022 Some great news... From next term, all DET schools in NSW will have access to the Phonics Screening Check to assess the foundational literacy skills of students in any year

11.01.2022 Neurodivergent Author Dr Camilla Pang’s winning book uses science to explore the complexities of human behaviour through the prism of her autism

10.01.2022 This unedited recount of an Australian primary teacher’s journey in trying to do what’s best for her students. It includes what she was taught at uni and what she’s expected to teach in Balanced Literacy such as, ‘Have the THRASS charts on tables at all times, practice the raps She’s right. These methods don’t work, but so many teachers continue to use them

10.01.2022 Times are changing and it’s wonderful! I could say better late than never, but it makes me angry that there are so many unnecessary casualties of our education system. L3 is currently used by the majority of state primary schools and its introduction was the main reason why more schools did not want to use ALERT Learning’s Systematic Synthetic Phonics. And now...the Department of Education’s L3 program has failed because It did not reflect the systematic approach to phonics...identified as the most effective way to teach reading, particularly for children with reading difficulties. The real problem is that, just like Reading Recovery was meant to be scrapped five years ago, teachers continue to use outdated programs because the methods are consistent with how they were taught at uni and too many teachers truly believe they work!

06.01.2022 Such a wonderful message for children struggling with anxiety. 'You're brave, you're resourceful, you're a thinker. You have everything you need inside you to cope with things brilliantly...’ [Via Hey Sigmund - Karen Young]

04.01.2022 Professor Snow of La Trobe University has written another brilliant blog-post. This is particularly helpful for teachers to use in their workplace to try and stop the use of Whole Language and Balanced Literacy. These ideologies are responsible for so many Australian children having trouble learning to read while the Science of Reading will not disadvantage anyone.

04.01.2022 A wonderful article explaining why THRASS, a very popular Australian phonics program, is NOT systematic phonics and it DOES NOT fit with the science of reading. Programs that use Analytic Phonics are the reason why many children still struggle with reading and spelling. Unfortunately, many teachers use this phonics option in Balanced Literacy classrooms because they were not adequately taught phonics at uni. Most teachers haven’t had the opportunity to see a systematic synthetic phonics program, which integrates morphology and etymology into simple practical spelling that does not rely on letter names, so teachers end up choosing programs, such as THRASS, that unfortunately perpetuate outdated practices

04.01.2022 This is a great resource for teachers with some interesting bits for parents too. After clicking the link, press the image of the book for the free download. https://dyslexiaida.org/dyslexia-in-the-classroom/

01.01.2022 Guessing is not reading! This is a great demonstration of why every child needs to be taught synthetic phonics

01.01.2022 This is a great explanation of why schools need to teach systematic synthetic phonics and not unsystematic balanced literacy

01.01.2022 Agree it’s engaging as a game, but it’s not based on the science of reading and it perpetuates strategies that cause difficulties in children learning to read.
