25.01.2022 I am a human being. I am a veterinarian. I am a pet parent. I am a wife. I am a daughter. ... I am a sister. I am an aunt. They say when your life is threatened by another person you should start talking about yourself and who you are as a person. This makes your attacker more likely to see you as a human and not a target for their anger and rage. This makes them less likely to kill you. So I’m laying it out there- who I am as a person- so maybe I won’t die like so many of my colleagues who could no longer take the abuse, the guilt, the manipulation from entitled, disgruntled clients. While there are many factors involved in why the veterinary profession is LITERALLY killing themselves, this stands out as one of the biggest reasons in my mind. I do not like for your pet to have to wait hours to be seen, but I can’t keep apologizing for only being one person or for having to prioritize the more critical patients over the ear infections or torn toe-nails. I do not like that your pet’s emergency may cause you financial strain, but I can’t keep apologizing for your lack of financial preparedness when you decided to take responsibility for an animal with needs or for expecting to make a living doing what I went into hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt to do. In the last FIVE days on my shift alone, I, or my staff, have been screamed at, cussed at, called racist, called neo-nazis, called scammers and thieves, had money thrown at us, and have been disrespected in countless other ways that would take far too long to recount. I have been doing Emergency Veterinary Medicine for nine years and have taken this abuse day in and day out. And I tell myself it’s okay because people are stressed and I want to help the animals. But now I want to help myself. And I want to help my colleagues. I give up my sleep, my sanity, my holiday and family get-togethers, my weekends with my husband, my time with MY OWN dying cat for ungrateful clients that leave me feeling defeated, unappreciated and numb. ERs all over are limiting their intake, closing altogether and referring elsewhere because they can’t staff this job. And this holiday weekend I was reminded why. This isn’t a sympathy post. I don’t want you to tell me you’re sorry or tell me how amazing you think I am for what I do. I want you to be cognizant of how you behave, how you treat people who are providing you a service (life saving medical care for your loved one!) and refrain from being rude, disrespectful or flat out belligerent. I want you to share this sentiment with everyone you know, so they, too, will be on their best behavior and treat other HUMANS with kindness and respect. You don’t know what people are dealing with. You don’t understand the amount of time and love and effort we put in to make sure your animal is cared for the best way we know how. It’s why we come back night after night... until one day we don’t. So please remember... I am a veterinarian, but I am also a human.

24.01.2022 When Forest Gump died, he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter said, "Welcome, Forest. We've heard a lot about you." He continued, "Unfo...rtunately, it's getting pretty crowded up here and we find that we now have to give people an entrance examination before we let them in." "Okay," said Forest. "I hope it's not too hard. I've already been through a test. My momma used to say, 'Life is like a final exam. It's hard.' " "Yes, Forest, I know. But this test is only three questions. Here they are." 1) Which two days of the week begin with the letter 'T'?" 2) How many seconds are in a year? 3) What is God's first name? "Well, sir," said Forest, "The first one is easy. Which two days of the week begin with the letter 'T'? Today and Tomorrow." St. Peter looked surprised and said, "Well, that wasn't the answer I was looking for, but you have a point. I give you credit for that answer." "The next question," said Forest, "How many seconds are in a year? Twelve." "Twelve?" said St. Peter, surprised and confused. "Yes, sir. January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd " St. Peter interrupted him. "I see what you mean. I'll have to give you credit for that one, too." "And the last question," said Forest, "What is God's first name? It's Andy." "Andy?" said St. Peter, in shock. "How did you come up with 'Andy'?" "I learned it in church. We used to sing about it." Forest broke into song, "Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am His own." St. Peter opened the gate to heaven and said, "Run, Forest, Run!" *.Pass it on!! Give someone else a reason to smile. *

20.01.2022 ! ! NSW has become the first state in Australia to automatically ban anyone convicted of seri...ous animal abuse from owning or working with animals after a government bill introducing tougher penalties for animal cruelty passed the state parliament last night. It follows other recent changes to animal cruelty laws passed this year, which include jail time and fines of up to $110,000. The new legislation is unique in that the lifetime ban is automatically imposed upon conviction. Animal Welfare League NSW welcomes these changes and looks forward to working into the future with the new laws to ensure the best possible welfare outcomes for all animals.

17.01.2022 House training! If you have a puppy and are trying to house train in the cold and in the rain you will need to make some adjustments. Puppies are reluctant to g...o out when it is dark, cold, or rainy. While you train and to avoid mistakes until they have learned, give them a legitimate toileting area in the house using wee pads, papers, fake or real grass. I know this is a bit tedious but better than having random accidents in the house. Make sure they are warm, get a coat and see if they go outside with the coat, and reinforce when they do. Next time it is not raining but the grass is still wet, throw kibble or some treats in a small area on the grass and let them look for it. That way getting their feet wet is a pleasant experience. Take them out at dusk or dawn while it is not completely dark so they get used to going out. Reinforce when they go in the right location and be patient! See more

15.01.2022 When looking to add a new dog to the family, its important to factor in the dogs breed and what they were originally bred for. Yes, how they are treated is impo...rtant but its also important to understand what might drive your dog and what their needs might be for that breed. 13.01.2022 Yes, your dog can eat before you, and yes, your dog can go through the door before you. She can also share your couch! You control every aspect of your dog's li...fe. You decide where she sleeps, when she eats, when she can go out, when she can play, even when she can go to the toilet! If this is not enough control, I don't know what is. Our aim should be to provide more choices for our dogs. For example, different sleeping places, access to the outside, engage when they ask for interaction or let them choose where to go on a walk or what to eat. Choice is a fundamental prerequisite for wellbeing for our dogs and us. My dogs eat before me because then I can enjoy my dinner in peace, and they go through the door before me so I can close the door after us. Dogs are sentient social animals, and they deserve to be treated with respect, compassion and love! See more

03.01.2022 Great news out of Tassie - the state government has agreed to work with RSPCA Tasmania to ban the use of cruel pronged dog collars! Pronged collars (also known... as a pinch or constriction collar) are made of metal and are designed to tighten around a dog’s neck whenever pressure is applied, causing pain and potential damage to the windpipe, nerves and other tissues. It is used as a form of punishment in training. Pronged collars are illegal to import into Australia, but they can still be used in some states - though they are already banned in Victoria. Find out more about pronged collars on our Knowledgebase here: https://bit.ly/3BiUhw0 and here: https://bit.ly/2W0Av8F
