If you have a desire to be involved with contributing to or presenting PD sessions do get in contact. We of course welcome any feedback on the PDs that we have offered this year.

23.01.2022 "English fluency should never come at the expense of a child's first langauge." So states a very recent white paper released by Oxford University Press which urges policy makers to consider alternatives to the exclusive use of English when devising English-taught programs. https://thepienews.com//dont-leave-the-l1-out-of-english-/

21.01.2022 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages Dear colleagues, This year, the United Nations chose to dedicate a whole year to Indigenous Languages.... "It is through language that we communicate with the world, define our identity, express our history and culture, learn, defend our human rights and participate in all aspects of society, to name but a few. Through language, people preserve their community’s history, customs and traditions, memory, unique modes of thinking, meaning and expression. They also use it to construct their future. Language is pivotal in the areas of human rights protection, good governance, peace building, reconciliation, and sustainable development. A person’s right to use his or her chosen language is a prerequisite for freedom of thought, opinion and expression, access to education and information, employment, building inclusive societies, and other values enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Many of us take it for granted that we can conduct our lives in our home languages without any constraints or prejudice. But this is not the case for everyone. " UNESCO. ATESOL NT are calling Expressions of Interest for Language Champions to encourage urgent action to speak, revitalise and promote Indigenous Languages, especially here in the NT. Language Champions can share their stories and support those who engage with Indigenous languages and inform the wider community of the importance of establishing links between language, education and inclusion. If you are interested in becoming a champion, please send us a line: ([email protected]) telling us why. Your ATESOL NT Committee.

01.01.2022 For EAL/D teachers who are looking for ways to tap into their students' home language/s and culture to both acknowledge their students' identities and extend their English language proficiency, the website below could inspire. This site provides examples of students writing "identity texts" in their home language which they then translate into English. The book created by year 7 Canadian students "The New Country" is particularly impressive. Something to think about over the holidays... http://www.multiliteracies.ca/index.php/folio/viewProject/8 ay
