14.01.2022 The Atrium osteopaths continue to educate ourselves in order to best meet the needs of our patients. Through exploring polyvagal theory we like to use our osteopathic approach in a trauma informed way. If you’ve ever heard me talk about the difference between physiology and psychology this has come from the polyvagal theory. This flip chart is a great way to educate patients to their level of understanding.
12.01.2022 When people who exercise a lot especially people who work in the exercise industry present with good posture they are often constantly mindful of their posture. I usually point out that posture needs to be easy. Easy posture allows an easy breath and an efficient balance of muscular activation which allows efficient energy use throughout the day. Osteopaths address this through our knowledge of the fascial, ligamentous and neuromuscular systems. This is why........ Why assess posture and balance? Posture is defined as the reflex anti-gravitational adaptation of a living body to the environment in which he lives. Posture depends on reflex acts which occur as a result of the integration of several sensory inputs and rapid adaptive motor reactions chiefly involving the visual, proprioceptive and vestibular systems. ‘Posture means unconscious, inattentive, anti-gravitational adaptation to the environment’. 30 When reflex actions are functioning efficiently and at a developmentally appropriate level, they free ‘higher’ cognitive systems in the brain from conscious involvement in the maintenance of postural control. Conversely, if reflexes are not functioning in an age-appropriate fashion, conscious attention must be diverted to the adaptation and maintenance of postural control at the expense of attention to other cognitive tasks. Posture is also essential to support static balance, to provide a frame of reference for coordination and a stable platform for centres involved in the control of eye movements (oculo-motor functioning). 09.01.2022 When people bring their irritated babies to see us at Atrium osteo and we discuss the different stresses the baby may’ve had to deal with early in life this is why. Babies are affected by their environment earlier than most people realise. When I first graduated we could barely talk about birth trauma in the clinical setting because it was thought that birth was natural and therefore not traumatic. Birth trauma was considered an hippie dippy concept. When I’m faced with a...n overwhelmed new family and an over stimulated baby with no ability to self calm it is obvious that stress or trauma has occurred to that tiny developing nervous system. One of my favourite approaches is to help the baby find a position of ease so that they can breathe completely into their tummy amd unwind the strains they’ve accumulated through pregnancy. The parents can also do this by holding the baby close to their chest and breathing calmly and deeply. We’ve known for a long time that drugs and toxins will stress an embryo but to see it written that maternal stress and electromagnetic stress will also activate the Fear Paralysis Reflex is really helpful. I love reading information that supports what I feel during treatment. *this is a long post but if you are still with me I want to also add that any physical strains presenting in the baby will stem from this trauma/stress response in the body. This can present as simple irritation or worse as stiffness, reduced motion, reduced function, impaired feeding, bowel dysfunction and in many other ways. The important thing to note is that the stress response is the treatment focus not the presenting adaptation. Osteopathy works to reduce the person’s need to have an adaptive response and to remind them of good physiology and biomechanics and safety within themselves. When we sit calmly with your baby on our table and it appears we are doing nothing, we are actually having a tactile interaction with the complexity that is a development person.
