25.01.2022 "For the past three years, I've been teaching this two semester seminar called the Science and Lived Experience of Autism. We try to explore the tension between what the science says about autism and what the lived experience of autism is like... ...One of the goals is to get students to think about, what do you do when the science doesn't match the lived experience? It's a really wide misconception that, if you're not displaying interest in a neurotypical way, if you're not,... for instance, making eye contact or you're not verbalizing something that you want to verbalize, you're just not interested in engaging. But when you actually talk to these guys and you spend time with them, you find that, for many of them, nothing could be further from the truth." If you want to understand autism, listen to autistic people. #ActuallyAutistic #AskAnAutistic #AutisticVoices #LivedExperience

19.01.2022 "The cafe itself has been decorated in such a way that the senses are not overwhelmed. "Within deaf culture, we talk about 'visual noise', so if we had lots of colour and lights it would be quite straining on an Auslan user,"" Some activities, like going to a café, are taken for granted by abled people but can be challenging for many disabled people. A café in Hobart has tried to change that! Would you go to a café like this one?... #Inclusion #Sensory #UniversalDesign #Auslan #DeafCulture

18.01.2022 '...I had similar doubts about my ability to cope with the day-to-day demands. I was lucky to have a supportive husband who could step in when I needed a break but many autistic moms arent as fortunate. Knowing that I was on the spectrum, and more importantly what that meant in terms of sensory sensitivities, emotional regulation and managing stress, would have been a tremendous help.' #autism #motherhood #parenting #latediagnosis

16.01.2022 'In the late-1990s and early 2000s, autistic rights activists had looked at ways of talking up the positives of autism. After much thought, they settled on neurodiversity, focusing on more than just autism itself. The inclusion of other conditions helped to broaden its scope, living up to the words true meaning.' #neurodiversity #autism #adhd #dyslexia #dyspraxia

04.01.2022 A moment in history: NSW Parliament moves a motion recognising the contribution of autistic people! #Neurodiversity #AutismAcceptance #SayNoToAbleism "CONTRIBUTIONS OF PEOPLE WITH AUTISM... Ms ABIGAIL BOYD (10:03:4): I move: 1. That this House recognises: (a) the real and valuable contributions that people with autism make to our community; (b) the countless people with autism who have made extraordinary scientific, medical, technological, artistic, political and social contributions to society; and (c) the valuable contributions people with autism make to public discussion, including in relation to social and environmental issues. 2. That this House acknowledges that: (a) neurotypical people are not inherently more valuable or capable of meaningful engagement with society than people with autism; (b) an individual's disability or neurodivergence does not undermine their traits, opinions or actions; and (c) people with disability have a right to fully participate in society on an equal basis with others. 3. That this House affirms that there is no justification for ostracism, bullying, or mocking of a person on the basis of disability or neurodivergence. 4. That this House condemns all instances of ableism, including the mocking of a person's disability, and the diminishing or devaluing of a person's actions or opinions on the basis of disability or neurodivergence. Motion agreed to." https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au//Pag/HansardResult.aspx

03.01.2022 Can government play a role in the neurodiversity movement? They sure can and Welsh parliamentarian Leanne Wood AM did just that! "...do you, Minister, think that neurodiversity needs to be considered as an equalities issue in its own right, with having a non-neurotypical brain becoming a protected characteristic? Do you accept that, currently, many public services are designed and delivered around the assumption that everyone is neurotypical and therefore fail to take into ac...count the needs of people of a different neuro type? Do you think that the response of public services needs to move beyond treating autism as a medical condition and, instead, begin to see having a neurologically different brain not as a defect, but, rather, as a form of neurodiversity that requires social acceptance, and social inclusion as much as it does practical support? And will you therefore ensure that this shift in thinking can move across Government? And do you accept that this is a basic human right and to achieve what I have outlined here this afternoon will require legislation and that nothing will happen with a business-as-usual approach? And, finally, would you agree that non-neurotypical people are best placed to represent and advocate for their neuro type, and that all education and awareness-raising campaigns should ensure that the authentic, autistic voice is front and centre of policy formation and service provision, through inclusion of members of the rapidly growing neurodiversity self-advocacy movement?" 02.01.2022 For a long time autistic people have spoken about "autistic culture", "autistic language", etc. A recent study has concluded that autistic people have their own unique and effective ways of communicating!
