25.01.2022 Seasons Greetings Wishing all our Facebook friends a merry Christmas and a safe and Covid-19 free 2021.

25.01.2022 Men's Shed lending a helping hand to the Whyalla community Some of the Men's Shed fellows have been working hard to provide some comfy seating for patients and friends seeking a few moments refuge from the hospital. People have been using the crumbling wall at the front of St Martin's Church on Wood Tce across from the hospital as a place to sit to escape the hospital grounds for a while, for a number of years now. The Parish Minister .. The Venerable Heather Kirwan decided i...t was time to knock down the wall and replace it with some proper seating for visitors. So she approached the Men's Shed for help (just before the COVID-19 crisis). The shed had just finished restoring some old garden benches which were ideal for the project. So a few of the guys got together and after COVID restrictions were lifted, knocked down the wall with sledgehammers, piled all the bricks into their trailer, then drove the trailer to the back of the church and stacked the remains. Then some weeks later Council came and dug some holes, and the Shedders, heaved 22 bags of rapid set, poured cement and secured four benches along Wood Tce (with anchors made in the shed metal shop) facing the hospital and two others on the church grounds, one along the south wall of the church hall and another under the verandah of the manse. A good result. Next Gary and some of the boys in the wood shop will be making a couple of large planter boxes which will be planted to add some colour to the street-scape. Thanks to Bill Collins, Neil Jones, Gary Misan, Johnson Darkwa, Brian Cope, Brian Marshall, Paul Snodgrass and Owen Smith for their efforts. Thanks also to the Whyalla City Council for sending a Kanga and crew to dig the 16 post holes needed to concrete the benches in place.

24.01.2022 Whyalla Men's Shed display at DELMAC

22.01.2022 Working bee Many thanks to Brian M, Brian C, Gary, John, Johnson, Paul, Liam, Ken and Neil for their hard work today (June 28) in sorting thru' our surplus wood pile and finally making use of our recently refurbished shipping container. The fellows enjoyed a free BBQ after their efforts, sitting outside in our garden area in the sun.... There's enough wood now more easily accessible to last us for the next five years! Next jobs are to sort thru' the steel, set to painting the outside of the container, a general tidy up of the fenced area and then off to the tip with what can't be recycled or repurposed.

21.01.2022 COVID Restrictions Hi all, I have just spoken to the friendly people at the SA COVID Hotline.... We have happily been told that we do not need to close under the current SA restrictions. However, we do need to - > Restrict the total no. of people on site to 50 or less > Ensure social distancing (1.5 metres) > Limit people in any one are to 1 person per 4 square metres <> we will change room capacities signage tomorrow to comply > Practice good hygiene, i.e. hand washing (preferred) or use of hand sanitizer > Stay at home if you are unwell for any reason, and > If you have any respiratory symptoms then stay away and get a COVID test and keep away from everyone until you are cleared. Keep safe everyone

21.01.2022 Church Pews Well done to Bill C, Johnson, Brian C and Gary M. in installing the garden benches at the Manse and church walkway at St Martin's Anglican Church on Wood Tce earlier this week. It was a job that was interrupted because of COVID but that we were keen to complete once we were back at the shop again. ... The job required drilling holes in the concrete under the Manse veranda and the walkway and securing the chairs using specially fabricated brackets made by the boys in the Shed metal shop. In addition to the benches, we also demolished the crumbling brick wall facing Wood Tce to make way for four more benches and a couple of planter boxes. That was particularly hard work requiring sledge hammers to knock down the wall, then gather all the bricks and remnants into the shed trailer (over a tonne), take the trailer down the back of the church and then remove the bricks and stack them behind the garden shed. Then it was off to the tip to get rid of the rubble. .. And finally, picked up a trailer full of pallets on the way home to cut up for firewood. All done in 3 hours .. Good job guys

15.01.2022 A visit from the Eyre Peninsular Community Foundation (EPCF) Some of the Directors from the EPCF visited on May 12 to give a public talk about the Foundation to the Whyalla community and then visited the Shed on May 13th. Steve Sykes and Garry Downey joined members for a tour of the premises and a friendly cuppa with homemade scones, biscuits (made by shed members) and lamingtons (store bought). While here they presented Shed Vicepresident, Brian Cope and Secretary, Gary Mis...an with a certificate commemorating the grant the EPCF provided to the Shed for $450 in 2020 to assist with the purchase of the new Pizza oven. This grant will help replace the oven stolen (store bought) the Shed by undesirables mid-2020. We are still are awaiting the purchase of the new oven which hopefully will be soon once additional security measures in and arround the Shed are completed. 15.01.2022 Donating to the Community As many will know , one of the ways the Whyalla Men's Shed generates much needed funds is by refurbishing pre-loved computers for sale to the public. Well' we've been doing pretty well in this regard of late and so decided to turn that around and rather than sell these computers, that we would donate some of these computers to disadvantaged families in Whyalla. So we got in touch with Centacare and offered them five desktop PCs that had been restore...d by our IT guru Bill Hatherly. The picture below shows Shed Secretary Gary Misan with representatives from Centacare receiving the desktop PCs, that they will arrange to give to deservinig families in Whyalla. The PCs are no slouches containing i5 processors, 4Gb RAM, a large HDD, large monitors, mouse, keyboard and WiFi dongle so that they can be connected to the Internet. They also come with preloaded MS Office software so certainly have plenty of grunt to surf the Net, cope with mountains of schoolwork, play games, do eMail and on-line banking and the like.

15.01.2022 Thanks to Centacare Catholic Country SA The Men's Shed received an unexpected but very welcome gift just before Christmas last year from the Centacare Catholic Country SA..a $500 cash donation. Wow were we surprised and grateful. So here's a shout-out to Dr Jen Cleary and staff from the Whyalla Office for their contribution to the work of the Men's Shed, it is much appreciated. ... 11.01.2022 A few things for sale or that we can make you

07.01.2022 Planter boxes done and in place at St Martin's Church. The busy bods at the Shed (Gary, Paul, John and Brian) got together and quickly made these 1 m x 600mm x 500mm planter boxes for the St Martin's Church to finish off the upgrade started by installing garden benches a few weeks back. Rev. Heather and her team positioned the boxes and have filled them with plants sure to bring a splash of colour as the spring season progresses. 05.01.2022 Many thanks to the Eyre Peninsula Community Foundation (EPCF) A quick shout out to the friendly team at the EPCF who recently provided the Shed with a grant of $450 so we can replace our recently stolen outdoor gas pizza oven. The metal shop boys are currently busy upgrading our perimeter fence to hopefully deter future intruders and some of our members have been upgrading other aspects of our security. ... When all this is done we will be getting our outdoor kitchen back together and hopefully can start enjoying regular cookups including BBQs, pizza lunches, damper, scones and other yummy things. This is the second time the EPCF has supported the Men's Shed. That was in 2014, soon after we opened. The EPCF provided funds so we could purchase fire extinguishers to bring the Shed up to Fire Safety standards, which was well appreciated at the time. This year the EPCF also provided grants ti two other community groups in Whyalla, namely the Police Blue Light Group and also the Whyalla Road Safety Centre. Check out the EPCF website at http://epcf.com.au to read about the great work this benevelant foundation does for other community groups throughout the region. Great work and again many thanks to the EPCF from the Whyalla Men's Shed.

05.01.2022 A cash splash from our Friends at 'A Little Fried' Many thanks to the generous folks down the road for a $100 cash donation stemming from their efforts catering for the folks at the Speedway. Michele Dix and Robbie Rigg popped over earlier in the week to hand over the cash which was gratefully received from the Shed's Promotion Officer, Ken Godden as well as other of the Shed's Committee members.... Some of our members already make regular sojourns to 'A litte Fried' for sustenance during the week and we encourage others as well as friends and family to do the same. They have a great takeaway menu including fish and chips, burgers, hot dogs, chico rolls and other yummy stuff More information can be found on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/alittlefried

04.01.2022 Vale Tony Johnstone We regrettfully inform the Whyalla Men's Shed community that our friend and long time member Tony Johnstone died on Thursday after a long battle with several debilitating conditions. Tony was a caring community minded man who had a great sense of humour that he presented with a poker face to those that knew him. A family man, a long time member of the Whyalla Sea Rescue team, a founding member of the Whyalla Woodies where he honed his skills both as a wo...od turner and prolific scroll saw craftsman. As a member of the Whyalla Men's Shed, he mentored many who wanted to learn the art of using scroll saws to make items for themselves and others. He served as a Committee member for some time and made a valuable contribution to the organisation. His regular Thursday visits will be missed by all at the Shed. Vale Tony Our deepest sympathy and condolences to Carol and family.
