20.01.2022 Triple negative breast cancer is one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer, with only a 15% survival rate. Our researchers at the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research are fighting to change this, and they are delving into a new treatment for this devastating disease. The treatment involves two compounds derived from herbs. The first reduces breast cancer cell growth, and the second causes cancer cells to die and activates the patient’s immune syste...m. This research has the potential to save thousands of lives, but we need your support! Here’s how you can help: https://bit.ly/2SzzEqg

19.01.2022 Armed with an Early Career Fellowship from ABCR and The Hospital Research Foundation, Dr Sarah Boyle is pioneering research to halt the progression of breast cancer. Dr Boyle is researching how physical stresses in the body can cause cancer cells to hijack healthy cells and make the disease progress more rapidly. She has discovered that when tumours experience physical stress, it turns on particular enzymes within cancer cells that cause aggressive disease. Dr Boyle is now... working on ways to slow, stop or even reverse these effects as a new way of treating breast cancer. 16.01.2022 Every day, approximately 57 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s around 20,000 each year. With so many of our loved ones fighting this enemy, it’s vital that we ensure they are receiving the best treatment possible. Dr Ashley Hopkins is investigating the impact that commonly used blood pressure and cholesterol lowering medications have on breast cancer therapies. Up to 60% of breast cancer patients use these medications, but there is little evidence informin...g how they interact with cancer treatments. These common medications may affect chemoresistance, chemotherapy induced toxicities and gut bacteria health. But we don’t yet know whether this has a positive, negative or neutral impact on breast cancer therapies and their side effects, said Dr Hopkins. With your support, Dr Hopkins and his team can start to answer these crucial questions: https://bit.ly/2RmkWW9 #BreastCancer #BreastCancerResearch

12.01.2022 Despite keeping up with her routine mammograms, when Beth felt a lump in her left breast after days of bruising pain, she feared the worst and immediately went for a scan. I’ll never forget the look on my doctor’s face when he told me the results. He was as white as a sheet, said Beth. Diagnosed with stage II invasive ductal carcinoma, Beth was rushed into surgery three days later. Thankfully, the mastectomy went well, and she was released from hospital just in time to spen...d Mother’s Day with her husband Paul, mum Maria and two sons Stefanos and Michael. 16 gruelling rounds of chemotherapy and 26 days of radiotherapy followed, but Beth has always been a fighter. Six years on, she still takes daily medication but she’s doing well and enjoying life with her loving family. Sadly, there are many others just like Beth. With around 20,000 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer in the last year alone, urgent research to help improve their treatments and outcomes is vital. Help us give hope to women like Beth: https://bit.ly/2RmkWW9 #BreastCancer #BreastCancerResearch

11.01.2022 Unfortunately, Nicole Steigen recently felt the heartbreak of breast cancer, after losing her loving friend Tash to aggressive breast cancer. After a short battle, Tash sadly passed away in May last year, leaving behind her husband and two young children. "What hit home the most for everybody was if anyone could have fought cancer off it would have been Tash. She was one of the toughest chicks out. To watch her be taken so quickly, despite all of the treatment she had under...gone was devastating," Nicole said. Nicole decided she wanted to do something to help in the fight against breast cancer. "Each year, the Nedlands Rugby Union Football Club in Perth have a ladies day to celebrate the women of the club with a different theme. Having just lost Tash, we knew it would be a great opportunity to honour her memory and create awareness for breast cancer and raise funds to research."
