24.01.2022 Happy Chinese New Year! After one helluva a Year of the Rat, we are very much looking forward to a more stable and nourishing year of the Ox - the Ox being denoted by hard work, positivity and honesty. Interestingly, these very characteristics are the pillars that underpin Collaborative Law - values which will allow you to move forward as a separated couple, while working together, focused firmly on positive goals and interests. As we enter a new lunar year, if you find your...self going through separation, remember to channel your inner Ox for a better outcome for you and your family #friendsnotfood #betheox #chinesenewyear #hny #goals #hardwork #positivity #honesty #live #transform #collaborate #getbalanced #movingonup #positivevibes #canberrabusiness #balancefamilylaw #familylawyer #newlaw #problemsolvers #legalcreatives #startup #smallbusiness #canberramums #create #innovate #collaborativelaw @cattlecalf

24.01.2022 Love stories end. And that's OK. But divorce doesn’t have to be the end of love. Divorce is an opportunity to show love like it matters more than ever. It’s the right time to make decisions grounded in compassion, respect and ultimately love. ... What a great time #conflictalchemist Virginia Warren and I had talking about love and the law. It was fun to reflect on my journey as a reluctant law student to actor to mum to social worker to where I am now, kindness advocate and director at Balance Family Law - it’s been quite a ride! I wouldn’t change a thing Check out my video interview - https://youtu.be/QOvTKIQxzZY Thanks for having me Virginia. And thank you for spreading the message of love in law land Happy G/Valentines friends

22.01.2022 A few days ago, I posted about Bronnie Ware’s 5 regrets of the dying and promised to go through each one, and reflect on our work with our family law and estate planning clients. I guess one of these regrets is standing out for a Jono and me quite a lot of late as we approach Xmas with the increasing pressure to get stuff done! It should come as no surprise that one of the 5 regrets of the dying is ’ . Many of those interviewed, deeply regretted s...pending so much time of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence. Jono and I were blessed to work with a wonderful client who sadly passed away earlier year. She was a luminous soul, who had, before her death and illness, made the brave decision to change direction in her life. She was full of courage and we witnessed that courage grow and grow as she battled a very aggressive cancer. Something beautiful that happened during her end of life journey, was her reconnection to those close to her. And the kindness and love that was so strong and palpable. This client had said to me, right from the beginning, don’t work so hard. Enjoy your life. Have fun. Savour the moments. She gently cautioned me not to work so hard and to spend more time with my family and friends. We are slowly (ok, very slowly) but surely following her advice and trying to find that perfect balance - which isn’t as unattainable as one may think, but can be challenging at times. We are working to banish the hustle! You can still get stuff done without hustling. Just you watch. Thank you and rest in peace and joy to this beautiful client, and friend. You have taught us so much. #newlaw #legaltech #familylawyer #familylaw #mondaymotivation #disruptinglaw #startup #smallbusiness #canberralocals #canberrabusiness #canberramums #divorcelawyer #remoteworkers #willsandestates #younglawyers #create #innovate #build #challenge #kindnessmatters #choosekindness #passion #skills #grief #regrets #bronnieware #noregrets #passion #workless #balance @flowersfromthegardencbr

22.01.2022 A huge congratulations to our friend and TKC colleague, Kirsty Salvestro of Flourish Family Law who is launching her book tomorrow, What are we fighting for - a Peaceful Pathway for Separating Couples written as part of her mission to educate and guide clients as to how they can achieve a peaceful separation. If you'd like to know more about "What are we fighting for" here is a link. https://www.flourishfamilylaw.com.au//book-what-are-we-fig

20.01.2022 What is Collaborative Law? How does it differ from other types of dispute resolution? Who does it benefit? Is it the right approach for you? Pepe asked all these questions (and more) with our friend and colleague, Cristina Huesch from Alliance Family Law. It’s about understanding ‘why’ a person wants something instead of focusing on ‘what they want’ or what they are ‘entitled to’ according to the law.... By focusing on understanding interests, collaborative lawyers can tailor solutions that work for both parties, not just solutions that make each person equally unhappy. 13.01.2022 Last year, I posted about Bronnie Ware‘s 5 regrets of the dying and promised to go through each one, and reflect on our work with our family law and estate planning clients. The fourth and penultimate reflection of the dying was the regret that they hadn’t let themselves be happier: Many didn’t realize that happiness is a choice. They stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. Fear of change had them pretending to others, to themselves that they were content and deep inside th...ey longed to have laughter and silliness in their lives. When you are on your death bed you don’t care what others think of you. I often think I can be the thief of my own happiness for the precise above-mentioned reasons. In a bid to kick off 2021 with a happy bang, I’ve signed up for Happy Lawyer Happy Life FREE Happiness Challenge. It begins tomorrow, Monday 11 January and you should all come and join in the fun. In what has become an annual tradition, the HLHL Happiness Challenge will have you kickstarting the year with a few new skills to give you the best chance of maintaining happiness in a sometimes pretty difficult profession. 12.01.2022 Just before Christmas Jono and I headed to our old stomping grounds - UC, to chat about our recent successes. The Uni hasn’t changed very much but we sure have! We had no idea what we were doing as we planned to open our firm, trial and error ensued (and one day we will share those tales!) ... but eventually, we created a firm that allows our actions and values to happily align. To mark Balance’s second birthday we share our article, and through it our thoughts an...d insights about the business of law, and how we do it a little differently. It’s been quite a journey and we can’t wait to see what this year holds for us. https://www.canberra.edu.au//uc-law-alumnis-shared-passion #newlaw #legaltech #familylawyer #familylaw #mondaymotivation #disruptinglaw #startup #smallbusiness #canberralocals #canberrabusiness #canberramums #divorcelawyer #remoteworkers #willsandestates #younglawyers #create #innovate #build #challenge #kindnessmatters #choosekindness #passion #skills #wednesdaywisdom #humpday #happyhumpday

09.01.2022 We are just delighted to have been named the Family Law Firm of the Year in the Corporate LiveWire Global Awards 2020, announced late last year. These awards focus on leading professionals and companies who have stood out for being results driven, innovative, and service focused. Experience, sustainability and other areas were also considered by the research team and judges. Over 90,000 businesses, corporate professionals, magazine contributors and subscribers nominated compa...nies and individuals whom they believed met the requirements of the award. Recognising excellence from all sectors, awardees are able to showcase their expertise, and highlight developments in their industry. Motivated by their desire to fix a broken system, this award recognises our family-first focus and innovative approach towards divorce. Contrary to the litigation process, their success is reflected in their ability to provide families with the option to heal and move on with their lives in a more positive way. Divorce is already a difficult process. Going through court can add more unnecessary stress to you and your family. Balance Family Law aims to minimise conflict by enabling a more collaborative course of separation. If you are going through or preparing to go through separation, contact Balance Family Law for an initial consult to find out more about the Collaborative Law approach and if it can work for you. #legaltech #familylawyer #familylaw #awardwinners #corporatelivewire #Dontworrybehappy #disruptinglaw #startup #smallbusiness #canberralocals #canberrabusiness #canberramums #divorcelawyer #remoteworkers #willsandestates #younglawyers #create #innovate #build #challenge #kindnessmatters #choosekindness #passion #teambalance

07.01.2022 Hey, hey! Jono here! There are lots of things to think about when you separate what happens with the house, what the financial future looks like, and what happens with the kids. But your will that can wait until everything else is sorted out. Divorce nullifies a former spouse’s entitlement to gifts or appointment as executor under your will (different states have different rules). But, it’s 12 months after you separate that you can apply for a divorce, and even if you a...pplied on the day you were eligible, its another 2-3 months before a Divorce order is granted. That’s 14-15 months (possibly longer) that your ex may still be entitled to benefit under your will and manage your affairs (which is not ideal). We always encourage our family law clients to get their estate planning sorted as soon as possible after their separation, to avoid issues occurring if something were to happen before their divorce. #fridaymotivation #tgif #newbeginnings #renewal #estateplanning #familylaw #familylawyer #collaborativefamilylaw #thekindlawyer #collaborativelaw #canberrabusiness #canberralocals #canberralawyer #fridaymood #estateslawyer #wills #kindness #kindnessmatters #innovation @carolelvin

07.01.2022 This time last year, the Balance crew attended the Little Oak Sanctuary inaugural Compassionate Stakes - an alternative event to the Melbourne Cup where horses are swapped for.... inflatable dinosaur suits? While I wrangled dinosaurs, Jono literally became one and took out the top prize #balancearegoodatwinning This year I will be helping out with such a great cause once again and will participate in 2020’s Covid compliant Compassionate Stakes on location at the sanctuary.... (I think I might get a chance to be a Dino this time) The event will be live streamed on Little Oaks Facebook page. Check it out! https://fb.me/e/1Cu3SN9fZ At Balance we proudly say #nuptothecup because, well, let’s not beat around the bush here, the whole idea that an event that causes significant harm to animals, encourages gambling, involves binge drinking and serious pollution (have you seen the mess left behind?)should be upheld as proud Aussie tradition? 06.01.2022 Hey! Jono here October 21st marked two years since I was admitted as a lawyer. I have been lucky to have a very interesting beginning to my legal career, getting to experience many situations that most lawyers may not until they're further along in their career (or at all). The most proud of which is being able to start and build Balance with Pepe, and being part of running a successful, award-winning firm. ... There have been many triumphs along the way, as well as many opportunities to learn and improve. And for all these experiences, and the people whom I have met along the way, I am grateful. For without them, I would not be the lawyer, or person, I am today. Many people ask how I got into law, and also why I chose to practice in family law (an area many people try to avoid ). And it is because it offers so much more than just "applying the law" - it's understanding people's problems and needs, and finding the best solutions that work for them and their family. I look forward to continuing to do this, and now being able to offer the same results through estate planning (which I am currently studying my Masters in - yes, I am insane). So, here’s to the past two years, and many more!

03.01.2022 We remind our clients that their separation journey will be an easier one if they acknowledge they’re still a team. We remind them about the power of WE. WE will work through this. WE will find a solution together. ... WE are both hurting but we can still show kindness to each other. The collective approach is not used enough at the end of a relationship. Instead, clients are assailed with a whole heap of yours, mine and not yours. And that’s just from the lawyers . And the outcome? Fighting, stress and high legal bills. We bring a consistently collaborative approach to all our matters, encouraging our clients to show kindness, work as a team where possible, and look for the common ground and a good enough outcome where everyone will be ok. 03.01.2022 As you will know from my previous post, I am doing the Happy Lawyer Happy Life 7 Day Happiness Challenge. Happiness isn’t something that just happens to you. We can create more happiness in our lives by making small changes in our behavior, our surroundings and our relationships. So far we have been prompted to book in our short breaks or holidays for 2021, I highly encourage it as it prioritises taking time out to recharge during the year, spend time with family AND gives us... something to look forward to. The next challenges were about working on making your work space more inviting and functional spaces and fostering our personal relationships. We are a little behind on sprucing our office () but I’ve been seeing some amazing efforts from others doing the challenge which show me that a few small changes can make all the difference. And about relationships? To improve our happiness, we should always be working on them. We can all take steps to be more understanding daughter or son, a more present parent and supportive friend. I find it’s about prioritising friends who lift you up, make time for you and celebrate your success and not those who bring you down. The energy we receive from our friendships can directly impact how we grow and develop as humans. Bring on Day 4 to 7! It’s not too late to join. #Happylawyerhappylife #Happinesschallenge #w #legaltech #familylawyer #familylaw #Dontworrybehappy #disruptinglaw #startup #smallbusiness #canberralocals #canberrabusiness #canberramums #divorcelawyer #remoteworkers #willsandestates #younglawyers #create #innovate #build #challenge #kindnessmatters #choosekindness #passion #teambalance @courtneysonnerdesign

02.01.2022 ? When I see a client for the first time, sometimes they’re just thinking about separating. They want to leave, but they’re afraid. Afraid because they will leave the safety and security of what is known and familiar - to embark on a new journey. A journey that may be full of challenges, risks and struggles. Equally, they don’t want to live with regrets. And for some of them, this means taking a leap of faith and throwing themselves into the unkn...own. They will walk away from the expectations that they and others have ever had of them and look forward to the opportunity for a new beginning and a sense of freedom. They will let go their fears, the opinions of others, societal pressures and obligations and commit to revisiting, or in some cases finding out what makes them joyful, and what they are good at and passionate about, without all the inhibitions that were part of their territory in their previous relationship. The wonderfully insightful Louise Mathias introduced me to Bronnie Ware’s 5 Regrets of the dying. Bronnie, a palliative care nurse, asked her patients about their regrets or what they would have done differently in their lives, given the opportunity. From these discussions, 5 common themes surfaced. Every few days, I will reflect on one of these 5 common regrets in a post and what I have learnt from the experiences of those we work with, who have made the decision, often a very brave decision, to leave the safety of the shore to explore the ocean and beyond, that is life. Sharing these experiences may help others have the courage to make some hard decisions and hopefully, go on to live their best life, without regrets. #newlaw #legaltech #familylawyer #familylaw #mondaymotivation #disruptinglaw #startup #smallbusiness #canberralocals #canberrabusiness #canberramums #divorcelawyer #remoteworkers #willsandestates #younglawyers #create #innovate #build #challenge #kindnessmatters #choosekindness #passion #skills #wednesdaywisdom #humpday #happyhumpday

01.01.2022 Hey! Jono here Every year it gets to November and I have grand plans to shave the beard and grow a moustache, and raise some moola for Movember ... And this year I actually did it! Movember is more than growing a moustache (and looking #hellafly). It's about raising awareness for men's health issues that, unfortunately, see many men die too young. ... The Movember Foundation aims to raise awareness for, and fund projects focused on the major health issues faced by men - mental health and suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. So please, if you can, head to https://au.movember.com/mospace/14422710 and make a donation! I've been a bit ambitious with my fundraising target, so my moustache needs your support! #movember #movember2020 #menshealth #moustache #mobro
