21.01.2022 WASTE TIP WEDNESDAY! Our recent waste audit showed 96.1% of our organics bins are free from contamination and ready to be composted! This leaves 3.9% that is landfill or recycling items. The main contaminants? Treated wood and food in non-compostable packaging. ... Top tips for organics bins: Cardboard like pizza and takeaway boxes are welcome. Never place foods that are in glass, plastic, aluminium or plastic-lined containers in the organics bin. Untreated wood is fine, however wood treated in any way - including paint - may contain harmful chemicals or inhibit the composting process. Place smelly waste like seafood in a paper or compostable bag and store in your freezer until collection day. If you choose to use compostable plastic liners, always ensure they are 100% compostable only and Australian standard (AS4736). 06.01.2022 Waste Tip Wednesday A residential bin audit this year revealed that Ballina Shire’s recycling bins are 91.2% clean recyclable items. We’ve seen a drop in recycling contamination from 11% in 2016 to 8.8% in 2020. Hooray! Based on our findings, here are three top tips to Recycle Right at home:... Keep your recycling loose. Never bag or box them or they can’t go to where they need to at the recycling facility and classed as contamination. No soft plastics of any kind in the recycling bin. Try storing your soft plastics separately and drop them at leading supermarkets to participate in the RED Group soft plastics recycling program. The material is then made into useful products such as park benches and bollards. Check out Lake Ainsworth’s parking bollards next time you’re there and reflect on the many pieces of soft plastic used to produce them! Only steel and aluminium containers/cans can be recycled in the kerbside recycling bin. For example, empty food cans, aluminium drink cans and empty paint tins. Other metal items such as steel bars and old metal furniture items can wreak havoc at the recycling facility. Instead, take them to the Waste Management Centre and it can be recycled as scrap metal. Get savvy by checking out our #recycleright rules and using our A-Z waste guide: https://ballina.nsw.gov.au/recycle-right--112
