22.01.2022 21st Annual Community Tree Day (part 1) Community congratulations Woohoo Baranduda Landcare (& partners) celebrated our 21st Annual Community National Tree Day today! Thanks to COVID restrictions - this year our celebrations extend over the full weekend!!! Today, four groups of 10 people - separated in space and time - planted and guarded over 1100 native seedlings. Well done and thanks to all.... Thanks once again to the awesome Wodonga Council Scott and Kim for helping hugely with site preparations and the weekends activities. And a huge well done to Tony Marsh for setting up our eight separate Eventbrite events for our Covid compliant weekend registrations. This is the 5th consecutive year of our Middle Creek riparian restoration project (a huge 5ha area.this year alone). We are grateful for funding to facilitate weed control and purchase of seedlings and guards - this year via North East CMA Riparian and Vic Landcare Grants Enjoy seeing the great folk who helped make an environment (better) today. 21.01.2022 Seedling saviours. Seed from pods of the threatened Swainsona sericea collected In 2019 (check our 8 Nov. post) have been successfully germinated by BLCare members Glenda Datson and Neville Bartlett. A variety of seed treatments to enhance germination were trialled - with the most successful being a hot water soak for 2-3 hours. Over 250 seedlings have been produced. The task now is to get tube stock large enough to enable early Spring planting. We aim to bolster the Baranduda Range population impacted by the 2019 planned burn. Additional stock plants will be maintained in members gardens and nearby reserves to facilitate ease of future seed collection and create insurance populations. 20.01.2022 Almost 200 years in the making BLCare today celebrated the unveiling of a new sign commemorating the 1824 expedition of explorer William Hovell (of Hume and Hovell fame) and his carving into the bark of a River Red Gum ‘the Hovell Tree’, on the banks of the Murray River in Albury. In Oct 2012 Tony Marsh and Neil Brown, on behalf of BLCare, planted one of 100 clones propagated by the Albury City Council. The site is on Middle Ck next to the bike track swing bridge adjace...nt to the Kiewa Valley Hwy. The clone project aims to ensure genes of actively growing trees taken from cuttings of the original Hovell Tree last into the future. Additional information and photos on Baranduda’s Hovell Tree clone are contained in the sign QR code (with thanks to Tony Marsh). https://kclg.org.au/index.p/test2/the-hovell-tree-baranduda The sign installation forms part of our DELWP funded Biodiversity On Ground Action Project that includes Parklands Albury Wodonga provision of woody weed control on key wildlife roadside corridors including the KVHwy, Yack Rd and Yack Crk intersection with the KVHwy. 19.01.2022 Community Tree Day (our 21st annual) preparations #2 Five ha is a huge planting area - and 2,500 is a massive number of native seedlings to plant & guard. That’s the task next weekend. both Sat 1st & Sun 2nd August. We are currently formulating COVID-19 compliant plans to enable three groups of 10 to be concurrently working across the area with each group working on different sites separated by well over 100m and individuals well-spaced. We will offer several (non-overlapp...ing) 2-hour time slots on both days. Stay tuned for a further details in an upcoming Eventbrite post.. given the current circumstances prior registrations will be mandatory this year. Unfortunately, In view of the current restrictions, we will not be providing the traditional post planting BBQ lunch nor will there be a porta loo on site. However, we'll have plenty of hand sanitiser available! Contact Glen Johnson [email protected] if you have any queries. Baranduda Community Church Wodonga Council See more

12.01.2022 Community Tree Day preparations #1 A huge thanks and well done to Tree Day preparation helpers over the weekend 500 new (fiddly to construct) biodegradable (brown cardboard) guards, 800+ milk carton guards threaded with 1600 bamboo stakes and another 500 stakes for creek line River bottlebrush taped with yellow and red makers are now on the Middle Creek planting site. Thanks too to the tremendous work from Wodonga Council (Scott, Kim et al) in adding rock to boggy sections of the track and slashing the site (tomorrow) . .. and especially landholder Michael H for providing private land access to the site. Stay tuned for more details on how to register (Covid compliant) time slots over the Aug 1 & 2 weekend to participate in the Community Tree day plantings. There's 2,500 seedlings to plant and guard. 10.01.2022 Emily is doing hoops over this rain . the 2,500 native seedlings planted in BLCare’s 21st Annual Community Tree Day last weekend really needed this good soaking! And we’re feeling grateful: for the extended prior dry period as we’d have otherwise bogged cars and or had no vehicle access into the Middle Ck planting site. that so many people were able to participate (in separate COVID-19 compliant groups of 10 over the weekend) and being able to complete the plantings just prior to the (even more restrictive) Stage 3 lock-down.

09.01.2022 'Bringing back the Banksia' Thanks to high tech GPS skills and dedication from Pete (& marking help from Nicholas) this week we completed mapping and number allocation of all 479 Banksia marginata (Silver Banksia) on the Middle Ck council reserve. Why: well it’s a bit over the top - but it does increase our ability to more accurately monitor survival, and longer term flowering and seed cone production over time. And from these results we’ll perhaps help determine optimal Ba...nksia site preference e.g. elevation - gully vs rise, south vs north etc The Banksias on site number almost one fifth of the total 2,500 native seedlings planted recently on Middle Ck as part of our 21st Annual Community Tree Day. The aim is for the Banksias to mature and ultimately become a Seed Production Area to facilitate future revegetation programs. Our Banksia project is a collaborative partnership with Wooragee Landcare & Community and forms part of a broader ‘Bringing back the Banksia’ & Friends of the Forgotten Woodlands Inc.program across SE Aust. 07.01.2022 The broom (Genista species) sweep was successful - 280 seedlings removed in a 2km section of high conservation roadside - we should all be proud of our remnant vegetation - this spring will show it at its best

07.01.2022 Well done and thanks to the North East CMA Vic Govt funded #WorkingforVictoria crew for recent works to help eradicate a high threat environmental weed Whisky Grass (Andropogon virginicus) infestation from a section of the Wodonga Beechworth Road in Leneva. The crew are also whipper snipping and clearing exceptional grass growth around the guards of 2,500 native seedlings planted in BLCare’s 21st Annual Community Tree Day. High native plant survival rates have been recorded i...ncluding almost all the 500 Banksia marginata established as part of Bringing back the Banksia project. 04.01.2022 Swainsona sweat & seedlings. It’s been a long project in the making. Concerned at the significant death of plants following the April 2019 planned burn on the Baranduda Range, BLCare & DELWP Hume ‘netted’ flowering plants in one remaining unburnt section of the threatened Swainsona sericea population. Over 500 seeds were collected in Nov 2019. https://www.facebook.com/barandudalandcare/posts/2507342552711623 BLCare members commenced the job of propagating the species.... A huge well done and thanks in particular to Glenda & Neville who were entrusted with the lion share of the work. Over 280 seedlings were germinated (not all seed was sown). Thanks to Tony and Pete who this week hiked into the remote site and planted 35 seedlings to replace fire killed plants on the range (although tiny we are taking our chances given the wet season to date). Remaining seedlings will be planted to create seed production areas in members gardens and more accessible local conservation parks and reserves. 01.01.2022 21st Annual Community Tree Day (part 2) Today marked the second part of our COVID-19 compliant weekend long marathon celebration... check y/day's post also! Another four groups of 10 people - separated in space and time planted & guarded another 1,100 native seedlings. Over 2,500 seedlings were planted over the last few days into a magnificent 5ha area. Thanks once again to everyone who made today and the entire weekend so successful. ... Over our 21 year National (Community and School) Tree Day journey we have now planted over 70,000 seedlings into our local environment. This includes over 15,000 plants over the last five consecutive years to help transform a 2.5km stretch of Middle Ck upstream of Fredrick Street Rd - from a willow infestation into a future wildlife habitat and recreational corridor (this is a wide continuous public land zone for all to enjoy). This work is on the back of fantastic partnerships with the Wodonga Council, Parklands Albury Wodonga, and especially the local community including Baranduda Community Church. We are grateful for funding grants via North East CMA & DELWP Hume over the journey to cover contract woody weed control and purchase of native seedlings and guards. Take a peek at the great people (& K-9's) that made today possible. ps check for a separate post (can't combine with photos post) showing a slow mo video of Emily the hoop jumping Border Collie.
