25.01.2022 Im working over in Deviot today filling the last of three wicking beds, built by Iain Gartley in Rosevears just down the road. You can find him on Facebook market place. These beds are an interesting combination of hydroponics and soil based garden. The whole unit is lined with plastic, and the bottom half is filled with gravel. Then that is covered with a fabric that lets water through, but not soil. There is a drain plug at the top of the gravel layer and any excess water drains right out. The top half was filled with topsoil well mixed with kelp collected from the beach. The client and me are looking forward to lunch from these beds.

24.01.2022 This technology has so much potential right here in Tasmania.

24.01.2022 What is wealth, and how can we create it ourselves? A few thoughts.

24.01.2022 If you want one of these here in Tasmania, Bootstrap Enterprises can make it happen for you.

23.01.2022 Community-owned and operated facilities. Over my lifetime the worlds focus on protecting the environment and acting in a more environmentally and economically ...sustainable way has become louder and more contentious. In addition to people who are simply making money from doing things the way theyve always been done, there has also been a lot of greenwashing and also effective technologies being deployed in very ineffective ways. I believe that as time rolls on, a significant part of the real positive change that happens in this area will revolve around community-owned and operated facilities. Shipping solid municipal waste from England to Sweden to incinerate it and generate electricity is never going to generate more power than the fuel burned to ship it. But facilities that are owned and operated locally, turning waste into a range of high quality and locally needed resources are always going to be more responsive to local needs, in addition to building more resilient communities. But how can that be done? Many of the techniques extolled in glowing terms in documentaries Ive been watching for years all require multi-million dollar startup capital and seriously large swathes of land. I believe there are two technologies that can be useful in starting such projects. The production of both biogas and biochar consume organic waste and can be scaled right down to a back yard sized facility while producing liquid and solid plant food and soil conditioning materials in a constant stream. I would like to talk to other people in the Tamar Valley who could see the potential in building such facilities to deal with the organic waste stream which at present is very costly to dispose of. If youre interested, DM me, or contact me at [email protected]. Lets see if our communities can really think globally and act locally. See more

23.01.2022 This is a slightly more detailed explanation of the digester system Im building at Glebe Gardens.

22.01.2022 Heres a short video I made, with my son holding the video camera. Its a little shaky, and not exactly HD, but it shows the main components of a digester, albeit on a small scale.

21.01.2022 This could work really well here in Tasmania.

21.01.2022 Today I finished getting the pipes sorted for the digester at Glebe Gardens. I have a short video that I will share as soon as I can get it edited a bit. The audio isnt too good on my rather dated camera!

19.01.2022 Benefits of bio-slurry *An excellent soil conditioner, adds humus *Enhances the soil's capacity to retain water *Safe to handle *Highly nutritious and contains trace elements... *Is pathogen-free. The fermentation of dung in the reactor kills organisms causing plant disease including weeds *it repels termites and pests that are attracted to raw dung. *Effective for a period of over 3years in the soil while chemical fertilizers serve only one cropping season. *Savings on chemical fertilizer and pesticides See more

19.01.2022 The digester is about 1/3 full of manure. The next step is to fill it with water, seal it, and connect it to filters start using the biogas.

18.01.2022 I would add the caveat to this article, that animal manure is actually pretty low in biogas potential, compared to other organic waste sources. So animal manure is fine, it only gets better from there. Also, you dont have to make enough biogas for an upgrading facility (50 cubic metres per hour or more) to make it worthwhile to build an anaerobic digester. You can run generators and boilers and other such things on far smaller digester facilities. There is a good economic case for any scale of anaerobic digestion facility.

18.01.2022 Im sure theres a way to make this happen here in Tassie.

17.01.2022 A short breakdown of how to get started with biogas.

15.01.2022 Some pipes and fittings from Bunnings. Ill outline what Im doing with them over the next day or so.

13.01.2022 A good meeting. Lets hope this is the start of something awesome for food startups here in Launceston.

13.01.2022 We can do this, right here in Tasmania.

12.01.2022 Something Ive been working on.

12.01.2022 Just one of the advantages that anaerobic digesters provide to farmers is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. There are a lot of potential carbon credits sitting in those effluent lagoons, just waiting to be accessed.

12.01.2022 This certainly makes the first stage of the biochar process look pretty simple.

10.01.2022 This is a nice summary.

10.01.2022 Ive collated some data on actual biogas outputs from a variety of organic waste inputs.

09.01.2022 And heres the whole thing with the pipes fitted to the lid. Now it needs fittings appropriate to each pipe, a good load of cow dung and water, and a lot of sealants to make it gas-tight.

08.01.2022 Heres an application of biogas that could work all over Tasmania. BE could make this happen for any food retailer in the State.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxGCfRRFPVA

07.01.2022 This technology can scale to any size or budget.

07.01.2022 Still looking for opportunities to get this tech deployed here in Tasmania.

06.01.2022 A nice load of horse manure to get the digester at Glebe gardens up and running.

06.01.2022 I think community-owned and operated facilities are some of the best solutions for a sustainable circular economy model that gets past the buzzword bingo and greenwashing hype and actually makes a difference on the ground. This is an article about a project on that scale in India, and I see no reason something similar couldnt be done right here. https://www.unenvironment.org//threefold-impact-rural-india in Tasmania.

05.01.2022 Im sure there are plenty of keen gardeners here in Tasmania who would like this kind of result.

04.01.2022 A quick overview of some of the different types of anaerobic digester designs available.

04.01.2022 This is well worth watching.

01.01.2022 Heres a better picture of the improvised bung I made for the threaded outlet at the bottom of the tank out of 4 threaded plumbing fittings that fit together. If its stupid and it works, its not stupid!
