Product Test: Battery Equaliser When the Battery Equaliser Product came on the market I thought the claims being made for the product were worth testing. We were about to leave on a trip to Tasmania with a small dingy and an electric motor and my pair of 42amp deep cycle batteries were showing evidence of their hard life. They are about 4 years old and we all know that batteries dont live forever, right?. The claim for the ...Battery Equaliser Product is that extends the life of batteries essentially by reducing sulphate build up on the plates. What I found interesting was the claim that it can restore tired and fading batteries to their original capacity. There was a bunch of testimonials and lab tests to support the argument, so I thought it was at least worthwhile to give it a try. Now the essence of testing is comparison so I put the Battery Equaliser in one battery and left the other. As far as I knew the batteries were more or less in the same condition having had much the same use. By the way the reason that I have two smallish batteries is simply that I find it easier to them to the boat one at a time. If one goes flat in use I know that Im about half way through my power and it might be time to turn for home. What happened in usage is that the treated battery got better and better whilst the untreated one faded and then only after a few more charges just died and wouldnt take a charge at all .It had collapsed and obviously one or more plates had simply given out .The treated one went through about 5 discharge/charge cycles before it stabilised and was certainly giving longer output than previously .This fitted the manufacturer product description. Now I realise that there is no way of knowing if the failed battery had been treated whether it would have kicked on .The Battery Equaliser folk tell me though that the usual cause of such mechanical failure is the sulphate build up so its a fair bet .Meanwhile the treated battery has kicked on for some hard usage over that trip over that trip and since so no complaints. The scientific claims seem credible. Whilst the extensive support material is mostly US based the manufacturers recently supplied batteries that had been restored from an unserviceable state to an entrant in a solar boat race .That boat won its class .It seems to me that any product which improves battery performance in the harsh marine user environment is worthwhile and I will certainly be adding it to all my batteries from here on .
