21.01.2022 ADOPTED 18/12/20 Meet Annie This gorgeous girl is beautiful in looks and in nature. She came to us from the pound and is now looking for her new forever home through us.... Although she doesn’t look it she is 7.5 years old and has been fully health checked and checks out well apart from being a little bit too chubby (we didn’t tell her that though) so a good quality diet would be best ongoing for her. She has adapted very quickly to being at the clinic but isn’t coping well being caged which is why we would love to get her into a home as soon as possible! Annie LOVES people and is very affectionate. She would prefer to be the only pet in the household as she needs to be the centre of attention. Annie is desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and up to date with flea and worming treatment. If Annie sounds like the one for you give us a call on 5623 4849. See more

20.01.2022 Miss Emily is a sweet 3yo DSH silver/white tabby looking for a home! After being abandoned by her previous owner she ran away from her carer and was missing for 2 months!! Fortunately she was able to be captured but her carer is no longer in a position to care for her. Whilst the cheeky miss Emily was on her adventure she had lost some body condition (a little thin) and also sustained a collar wound to her armpit. This can happen when collars become lose (don’t have a safety... release) and get stuck as cats try to struggle out of them. (Awful, I know!) In this case, the collar became imbedded and rubbed away all the skin down the muscle. Yesterday, Dr. Terri fixed her armpit wound and she received a full ‘grease and oil’ change. She got her teeth cleaned up, had a vaccination and of course has been wormed/flea treated. We are doing all of this probono in the hope that we can find Emily her purrrrfect fur-ever home. She’s so sweet and lovely. Her adoption fee would be $200 just to help contribute to some of her vet bills/care. She would be ready whenever someone is ready for her. We would help with any questions. Please call to discuss! See more

12.01.2022 TICK, TICK, TICKS! There are four types of ticks in Australia but only one type causes paralysis, the paralysis tick otherwise known as Ixodes holocyclus. If you have travelled to Eastern Victoria, the NSW coast or QLD coast, then your pet is at risk of tick paralysis. The paralysis tick attaches to your pet, as it feeds on your pet it injects saliva which contains a toxin. This toxin causes paralysis that starts in the back legs and spreads forwards, it also causes interna...l paralysis such as the inability to swallow and breathe. Signs that your pet may have an engorged tick on them: Wobbly or uncoordinated gait Weakness Collapse Vomiting or retching Change of bark or meow Difficulty breathing Tick paralysis requires urgent and intensive treatment as it will rapidly progress to respiratory failure and if left untreated is fatal. If your pet displays any of the above symptoms please call the clinic straight away on 5623 4849. Prevention is key: 1. Using a regular tick preventative such as Nexgard, Bravecto or Advantix. 2. Every day check your pet for ticks by feeling all over their coat/fur as well as checking inside the ears, under the lip, between the toes and in skin folds. 3. Contacting your veterinarian or local veterinarian if you are away from home for advice on tick identification and removal. 4. Only remove a tick with a special tick remover, using anything else or just your fingers will cause more damage. If in doubt book an appointment for the veterinarian to remove the tick/s. 5. Book an appointment straight away with a veterinarian to have your pet assessed your pets condition can deteriorate even after the tick is removed. Following the above steps with help ensure your pet has the best chance of survival. If you have any questions please contact our staff for advice. Image source: Virbac

09.01.2022 Move over Steroids here comes Cytopoint Cytopoint is an injection given to dogs to stop their allergic itch. It is a biological medication (like a vaccine) that works by acting similar to your dogs immune system. It is not a pharmaceutical drug that needs to be metabolised by your pets organs. ... Cytopoint blocks a protein that sends signals to your pets brain to cause them to itch and scratch. By doing this Cytopoint helps to break the itch cycle, this allows your pets skin to return to normal. WHY choose Cytopoint over Steroids? Cytopoint can last for up to 4-8weeks It is safe for dogs of all ages, including our little babies <12 months old. Steroids cannot be used in patients less than 12 months old as it interferes with their growth and development. Cytopoint doesn’t need to be processed by the kidneys or liver, which means it can be used while your pet is on other medications. Longterm Steroid use causes many changes such as altered liver metabolism and can make pets more susceptible to infections. Steroids can interact with some medications. There are no unwanted side effects like Steroids such as weight gain, increased appetite, increased thirst and urination. If you think your dog would benefit from Cytopoint to help manage it’s allergic itch then call our lovely staff to book an appointment 5623 4849. Image source: Cytopoint

07.01.2022 ITCHY, SCRATCHY? Is your pet constantly scratching or licking? Your pet may suffer from fleas, mite or allergies. From spring to autumn we see a lot of pets presenting with itchy skin. Itchy skin is not only irritating for your pet but it can keep you up at night. Itchy skin is something that needs to be addressed in a very thorough manor to able to identify the cause and create a longterm management plan. ... Your vet will ask you a lot of questions about your pets behaviour, type of itching, where they are itchy the most on their body and how often this occurs. Your pet may suffer from allergies to fleas, food or environmental allergens. Flea Allergy Dermatitis Pets who are allergic to the saliva of fleas will be incredibly itchy with just 1 or 2 flea bites compared to another pet. Skin area most affected: base of tail, up the middle of the back and around the back of the neck Time of year: worse during spring/summer but can be all year round Treatment: For these pets it is vital to be constantly up to date with flea treatment. Food allergies Some pets are allergic to the protein component of their food., their immune system causes an inflammatory response to the protein. This results in red itchy skin and sometimes ear infections. Skin area most affected: feet, armpits, stomach, around the eyes, mouth, ears and bottom. Time of year: All year round Treatment: This is guided by your vet and usually involves a novel protein diet for at least 8-12weeks. Give the team at Baw Baw Paws a call to book an appointment to discuss your pets allergies and how we can help them live a better less itchy life on 5623 4849.

Bliss is a 10.5 year old female abyssinian who through no fault of her own is now up for adoption. At her previous home, Bliss wasn’t happy with the change in family members and wasn’t happy living with small children.... She would be most suitable to go to a home where everyone is of a secondary school age and above and would need to be the only cat/dog in the household. A quiet, stress free home is essential for her ongoing health and management of her anxiety. Bliss comes desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and flea/worm treated. To schedule a meet & greet with bliss please contact the clinic on 5623 4849. See more

04.01.2022 MEET FRIDAY I'm not used to the spotlight being on just me, so I can be a little shy when I first meet people, and if I go somewhere new it is a bit scary for me. But if you sit quietly and talk to me, I will come out and make friends once I know it’s safe. I've lived with multiple other cats in my previous home so wouldn’t mind the company of another feline friend. I love smooches and chin scratches once we get to know each other. I’ve been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and flea/worm treated and am ready to go to my new family right away. If you think I might be the perfect fit for your family, please give the humans at Baw Baw Paws a call on 5623 4849.

02.01.2022 ADOPTED 18/12/20 Annie is in the office today doing some reception work on our busy Monday whilst she patiently waits for her new family!
