24.01.2022 A BIG Thank you to Tura New Music for donating to Baya Gawiy their left over materials from musical instrument making project. As Tura finish up another wonderful part of their 2020 Fitzroy Valley New Music Project, with twin residencies of Peter Keelan and Cecile Williams. Tura New Music had some PVC pipes left over from the instrument making and visual arts project and passed them on to us. The the instrumental musical performance was show-cased at Fitzroy District High Sc...hool today (Wed 23rd 2020) for the community to enjoy. So now it is Baya Gawiy’s turn to get creative! And with hot time here we might look at making using some of the PVC piping for water play- even more fun! Fun Fact: Those pipes are 6 metres long. Once a sawfish grows longer then 3 metres, they leave our river systems and move out into ocean. This is when they can grow up to a maximum length of 7 metres. That is 1 metre MORE then these pipes. #Tura #PVCpipes #Bayagawiy #waterplay #donation #FVNMP

24.01.2022 This year’s NAIDOC teams, combined forces, with Fitzroy Valley Distric High School’s early years’ classes and the Baya Gawiy team, to pull off an amazing NAIDOC event at our centre. We wanted to move away from stereotypical activities, toward meaningful cultural experiences, that the children are familiar with. We kicked off with tunes from our resident songbird, Bullen Rogers, while the children enjoyed eating fresh fruit bowls. ... We broke off into smaller groups to participate in art experiences, such as, stencilling animals on to painted landscapes. Posca pens were a favourite in designing patterns and animals on dilly bags to take home. Naomi Richie from FVDHS facilitated painting seasonal images on Perspex, which Mangkaja Arts kindly donated for the event Mary Heart, Maryanne Coe and Vicki Hynam cooked up a storm, featuring kangaroo and beef stews, served with Mary and Patricia’s famous dampers. Patrica Cox was impressive in her open fire damper- making workshop, under the shade of a Joolwooljidi (Bauhinia tree in Goongiyandi). Bullen cooked Wanyjirri (Walmajarri for Kangaroo) in our fire pit. Many thanks to Dee Carter and all the teachers from the FVDHS who helped make our day a success and for the t-shirts and cupcakes. Natalie Davey for being the photography and capturing the event for us all to relive. We want to acknowledge our visiting helpers: Stacey and Nicola, from Boab Health, who worked on making clay animals and felt and sticks to make small pretend fires, with our young children The Yiramalay School girls were chipping in where needed and we hope to see them back here regularly. Magabala Books very generously donated 100 books for NAIDOC. The children each selected one to put in their individual dilly bags.

20.01.2022 On Tuesday 10th the Winini and Udu uduk children went to the cave school at Gogo station. They had a great view from the BIG bus. That meant they could check out the surroundings and spotted lots of animals. So everyone made sure to point out every wallaby and cow they saw on the drive. The ride was so much fun the children giggled and smiled the whole way. Armed with water bottles and hats we followed Bullen up to the cave school where he told us stories and the history of t...hat place. Then it was time to explore the caves! The Children ran their hands along the wall and in the sand to feel and compare the different textures. They even found time to jump around in some leaves. After all that exploring it was time to sit together in the shade and have a snack and BIG drink of water and then journeyed back to Baya Gawiy.

16.01.2022 Safety with Snakes Snakes are one of the coolest things to encounter when outdoors. The key thing to remember is that no snake is dangerous if you leave them alone. ... However, sometimes unfortunately accidents can happen. If you or someone is bitten by a snake it is VERY IMPORTANT To know what to do and what not to do. This could decide whether the victim will survive or not. Here is the standard procedure to provide first-aid for a snake bite victim. 09.01.2022 On Monday, 9th March our children and educators celebrated International Women’s Day 2020 with a morning tea and the visit of the Fitzroy Valley District High School girls. The students from FVDHS worked in collaboration with educators to create a banner to reflect the theme of International Women’s Day 2020. The campaign theme of International Women’s Day this year is #EachforEqual. An equal world is an enabled world. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts ...and actions all day, every day. We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world. Let’s all be #EachforEqual.
