24.01.2022 It’s international women’s day so over to Mandy for a special post today. Hi to all the women out there, we’re a special breed us women, which is probably why men don’t get us and probably why they never will. On Friday, I had a medical emergency and had to have surgery, I promise no gory details and this post isn’t about that. What it is about is those amazing women who work in health care. From the behind the scenes admin who make sure the right paperwork is input and gets... to the right person. The ambulance women - (or Ambo's as we Aussies like to call them). The deliverers of nourishing food, which is so important. The cleaner uppers of messes made by us messy patients. The triage nurses who assess the damage and work out what needs to happen and reassure you that everything will be okay. The ward nurses who are so kind and caring, giving advice, delivering meds, making sure you are comfortable, I mean I know it’s their job, they just do it so well and they keep you calm, so important. Then there are the operating team, the beautiful caring surgeon who holds your hand before you go under, she knows you are scared. The 72 year old team leader, who will be a total loss to the healthcare system when she eventually retires. The anaesthetist and assistants who check and double check and basically keep you alive. The doctors who make the decisions about your body based on years of experience. I know I’ve missed many more, because that’s how it felt, many, many women taking care of people who were at one of the worst points in their life. Pain is a universal uniter we all feel it, we all want it gone and we all want to be healthy and healed. I was at the Lyell McEwan hospital in Elizabeth, it is undergoing changes to make it better and they can’t come soon enough. My treatment was outstanding, what let the place and these wonderful women down was some of the outdated equipment and lack of staffing. Also, I’ve never understood why you would ever think that they don’t deserve a pay rise to make their lives better, they've done so much for us not only this year, for years and years. That’s enough of the complaints though, we need to focus on the positive. So, to all you women healthcare workers wherever you are and whatever job you have, you are my hero’s. If this year has taught us anything it’s that women are strong, capable, kind, caring and so much more. Heck if we were running the country, I just about reckon us and Mother Nature would soon have this planet and its people back to a healthy, sustainable and more natural way of life.
