25.01.2022 7 years ago today the Liberals came to office, promising a stronger economy and more jobs. What they've delivered is 1 million Australians unemployed, another 400,000 to join them by the end of the year, a tripling of the national debt and the nation's first recession in 29 years. Plus, 7 years of scandals, rorts, buck-passing, broken promises, an aged care crisis, Robodebt, raids on TAFE, universities, the ABC, ever-increasing costs to go to the GP and complete failure to tackle climate change. ScoMo has to go.

25.01.2022 NBN Co is now chucking $700 million at businesses to connect them to optic fibre -- $51 billion after the Liberals said copper would be good enough. There's incompetence, then there's $51 billion of incompetence.

25.01.2022 This is what Liberal Minister Anne Ruston said 12 months ago about calls to lift income support payments. It's just so disrespectful of people who are doing it tough.

24.01.2022 This is pretty outrageous. 22 emergency department doctors at Launceston General write to the Health Department to outline their deep concerns over problems, including "unnecessary deaths" and Premier Gutwein dismisses their concerns as a political stunt. Patients are literally dying because of his Government's sub-standard management of health and he can't even be bothered to listen to what the DOCTORS are telling him. How much more arrogant can Peter Gutwein get?

24.01.2022 Triabunna Markets is back! If youre on the east coast pop along - great stalls and plenty of herbs and veggies for sale. Cheryl, Val, Chris and Murray from the Spring Bay Suicide Prevention Network are on-hand and Pras and Sally are belting out the tunes.

24.01.2022 The Liberals oppose wage rises for workers during their working lives and they oppose increases to workers' retirement savings. Just when do the Liberals support workers getting a fair share of the wealth they produce for their employers?

24.01.2022 A Prime Minister with any regard to ethics and ministerial standards would sack a Minister who an Australian court had found had engaged in conduct that "can only be described as criminal". This is a test for Scott Morrison. Does he have any standards of national leadership or is it all just a game to him?

24.01.2022 These are our mums and dads, our grandparents, our friends older Australians who built this country, and who deserve our protection. The Morrison Government has neglected the aged care system for too long.

24.01.2022 Busy Saturday morning with visits to New Norfolk Markets (catching up with Jess Cosgrove and Rotary’s Steve and Sue), South East Arts new exhibition at Sorell Memorial Hall (hi Saakia and Michelle!) and Midway Point Neighbourhood House’s open family day (Suzy got her head shaved later in the day to raise funds for cancer research, and I chatted with the local fire brigade, including new chief, 22 year old Nathan!). Now I’m on the Spirit preparing to make the crossing for 2 weeks in Canberra. See you when I get back.

23.01.2022 7 years in 47 seconds

23.01.2022 Peter Gutwein has made a complete mess of this and Tasmanians are paying the price. He needs to either confirm that Incat is able to build the new Spirits or he needs to go back to the TT-Line deal, and he needs to do it now.

21.01.2022 Really important message from Mark Butler. Aged care workers are overworked and underpaid.

20.01.2022 It was terrific to catch up with Mav from 97.1 fm The Voice of the Midlands today where we talked about reopened borders and family reunions, Teddy Sheean, the need for a Royal Commission into veterans affairs, the Chinese wine tariffs and, very importantly, music. Community radio is such an important part of life in the regions and Lyons is blessed with some fantastic stations, run by committed volunteers. I'm proud to be a sponsor of them. Thanks for having me on!

19.01.2022 Australians have been trying to get home for months but flights have been cancelled and airlines are charging massive fees. Australians overseas and their families here should be able to count on their Government to help - but Scott Morrison is missing in action.

19.01.2022 Today is R U OK day and this year it is particularly important to check in with your family and friends. Take a minute or two to check out this website - there are some great tips on how you can help check that the people you care about R OK and, more importantly, what to say and do if they tell you they're struggling. https://youtu.be/erHLP29tzPE

19.01.2022 78 years ago today a Tasmanian teenager strapped himself to a machine-gun aboard a sinking ship to fire on Japanese war planes strafing his crew mates in the water. Teddy Sheean saved 49 lives at the cost of his own and today he will be post-humously awarded the Victoria Cross. In attendance with Teddy’s nephew Garry Ivory and applicant and long-time campaigner Guy Barnett MHA will be the Governor-General, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate, representing the 3 highest offices of the nation, as well as ministers and shadow ministers. As a local MP I’d have loved to be there too but as I said at the doors of Parliament House this morning, today’s ceremony is not about local MPs getting their photo taken, today is a day for Teddy, his family and the Tasmanian community. A great day.

18.01.2022 Scott Morrison wants us all to forget about Sports Rorts. The evidence is clear - hes up to his neck in appropriating taxpayers money to benefit the Liberal Party.

18.01.2022 Today Boyer Mill in the Derwent Valley is celebrating its 80th birthday. That’s 80 years of providing terrific long term jobs to many Tasmanians, and manufacturing newsprint and other paper products. I’m in Canberra so can’t be there but many thanks to Ben who went along on my behalf. To everyone at Boyer, happy 80th and here’s to many more!

18.01.2022 Congratulations to Adams Distillery, Glen Ireh Estate, Perth Tasmania for winning the Southern Hemisphere Whisky of the Year and Australian Whisky of the Year for their Tasmanian single malt whisky! This is a big achievement and everyone involved should be very proud. Tasmanian distillers are taking on the world. https://www.examiner.com.au//unique-malt-process-for-best/

17.01.2022 It’s been nearly a quarter-century since the shootings but for so many people in Tasmania the memories remain raw and deeply hurtful.

17.01.2022 Gorgeous Tassie spring morning at New Norfolk Markets today - queues to get in, very well managed by Jess Cosgrove and her crew of cut-throats (apparently it's World Pirate Day). Lots of catching up with folk (and lambs, pooches and galahs - hi George and Boots) as we wandered through. Terrific stalls, great vibe as always. Of course, chatting with local MLC Craig Farrell was a highlight - he's such a great representative of this wonderful community.

16.01.2022 Grieving daughter Alexandra Prendergast is upset with Prime Minister Scott Morrison for telling reporters the time and location of her fathers funeral. https://www.abc.net.au//grieving-daughter-prime-m/12662534

16.01.2022 Such a terrific industry we need to be supporting.

16.01.2022 Happy End of 14 Days Quarantine face! Back in the community at last!

14.01.2022 Where's the evidence that outsourcing pathology to a private company is in the best interests of patients and quality healthcare? Where's the transparency? It's all hidden behind 'commercial-in-confidence' mumbo jumbo. The company makes a pile of money, patients admitted to a public hospital as "private" patients get slugged big gap fees, and the Liberals get donations.

14.01.2022 Nothing to do with politics or Tasmania, but a story of simple kindness that deserves to be told.

14.01.2022 The supporting agricultural shows and field days grant program is now open for organisers who incurred costs when shows and field days were cancelled because of COVID-19. If you think you might be eligible, you can read more about the guidelines here: https://www.communitygrants.gov.au//supporting-agricultura

13.01.2022 Former Liberal Treasurer Peter Costello is urging the Liberal Morrison Government to introduce a death tax. So Australia may get a death tax after all. From the Liberals.

13.01.2022 The Morrison Governments own figures show there is just one job vacancy for every 50 unemployed people in regional Tasmania. Its even worse for young people. The Liberals dont have a plan for jobs and theyre blaming everyone but themselves.

13.01.2022 Stacie and Cameron didn't stop at the back of the Sorell Footy Club canteen today, on the deep fryer, making burgers, boiling the savs, making life a bit easier for Belinda, Andrea and myself (and colts Sam and Tom) up the front. Big crowd for Sorell v New Norfolk and when I left Sorell were in front, exciting the home town crowd. Fantastic day out for it.

13.01.2022 Steady on sport, Premier Gutwein will accuse you of playing politics if you complain about how long it's taking to get hospital treatment in Liberal Tasmania.

12.01.2022 The Liberal Government MUST listen to the combined will of the parliament and launch a Royal Commission into Veterans Suicides. Failing to do so will be a gross betrayal of our returned service personnel and their families.

11.01.2022 Today I called on the Tasmanian Liberal government to get off its backside and progress a stalled bumblebee pollination trial for the state’s vital berry production.

11.01.2022 Terrific yarn about some homegrown heroes of the small screen. Due to covid this season will be all-Tassie too. Don't be a prawn - get into it!

11.01.2022 Nice to know where Australians sit on the Morrison Government’s list of priorities......

11.01.2022 Lovely day on the east coast. Coming back from Scamander I visited my happy place, the rocks just north of the Four Mile Creek turnoff on the highway. Whenever I can I just love to stop here and watch the waves and smell the sea - the wilder and windier the better.

11.01.2022 The School Locker is a BUSINESS owned by BILLIONAIRE Gerry Harvey. If his stores are busy he can HIRE MORE STAFF and PAY THEM! This advertisement is an abuse of Australia's volunteering spirit. Gerry Harvey can just get in the bin!

10.01.2022 This year has been pretty tough, from bushfires, to a global pandemic, 2020 has thrown a number of challenges at us. The Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) currently has a grant program available to support projects that are helping young people respond to and overcome some of the challenges facing Australia's youth. If you're an individual or an organisation helping to support young people, you could be eligible for a grant of between $5,000 and $20,000. ... 10.01.2022 7 years of rorts under this incompetent, shifty Liberal government.

10.01.2022 The Holocaust was created by evil men following an evil ideology. 76 years ago it came to an end with the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Today I spoke in the parliament about the importance of remaining vigilant to ensure nothing like it happens again.

10.01.2022 The Federal Court made a finding that this Minister acted unlawfully, and in a manner that "can only be described as criminal". C R I M I N A L. Alan Tudge should have had the decency to resign, but he hasn't.... Scott Morrison must now put the national interest before the political interest of his own party, and sack this Minister.

09.01.2022 If you have some time pop down to Dodges Ferry Horse Riding Club HQ (at Montagu Street in Sorell) this Friday for the Twilight Christmas Market. It’s bound to be a great time for the family. Details on the poster below

09.01.2022 Despicable to see this gutless, brainless racism rearing its head in our wonderful Central Highlands community. Whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves.

09.01.2022 For 24 years the Tasmanian community has worked hard to focus on the Port Arthur survivors. A new movie that focuses on the gunman threatens all that hard work. Production on this movie should stop.

08.01.2022 Friday morning I was down at Northgate Shopping Centre with State Member of the Legislative Council @joshwilliemlc speaking with members of the community, listening to what impacts them most and how everyone intends to celebrate Christmas this year.

08.01.2022 The stranding and deaths of the pilot whales on the west coast of Tasmania are heartbreaking. Thoughts are with everyone working in distressing and challenging conditions to save those they can. (Photo from today's Mercury newspaper).

08.01.2022 The Liberals lied about the cost of a full-fibre NBN. Then they covered it up.

07.01.2022 Australian workers deserve job security and higher wages. Today I spoke in the parliament about how the Liberal Government's Omnibus Bill fails this critical test.

06.01.2022 Rejuvenating our regions needs to be a critical component of all efforts to rebuild our state and national economy. Today, my opinion piece on how best to do this was published on the Tasmanian Times, click below to give it a read. https://tasmaniantimes.com//regional-rejuvenation-tasmania/

06.01.2022 Today I spoke with Mike O'Loughlin at Tasmania Talks about the vaccination rollout shambles, JobKeeper ending, the women's march and pensioners. Have a listen here. https://embeds.audioboom.com/publishing/playlist/v4

06.01.2022 Do you live in the fast-growing Sorell municipality? The council is reviewing its open space, with a view to selling space it believes is no longer required. If you have an interest in this, check out the council's Open Space Strategy information below and have your say.

06.01.2022 The Tasmanian Liberals were effectively given $157 million by the federal government to build more public housing. They built five in 3 months. Five. It's pathetic.

05.01.2022 If we’d listened to Scott Morrison, COVID would have spread throughout the country like a bushfire. He gets it wrong, every time.

04.01.2022 If you're over 35 and unemployed, Scott Morrison is making it harder for you to compete for a job.

04.01.2022 State Government roadworks just south of Sorell are apparently causing major headaches today - people stuck in traffic around Lewisham for an hour, people missing doctors appointments, etc (photo supplied - Im at home in quarantine!).

04.01.2022 "after Morrison’s intervention in July, was intended to give a special task force time to review the contract. That report is due shortly." IT HAS BEEN FIVE MONTHS! I would love to see replacement ferries built in Tasmania but there's only one company even remotely capable - Incat - and surely to God it shouldn't be taking five months to find out whether it can do the job.... This delay is disastrous for Tasmania's economy, and all because Morrison is desperate for headlines.

03.01.2022 A classic non-apology from our arrogant premier. "If someone is offended I'm sorry I offended them" is not an apology. An apology is "I am sorry for my remarks, I should not have made them."... Gutwein accused EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT DOCTORS of playing politics when they complained in writing that people were dying unnecessarily at Launceston General. His mealy-mouthed response is not good enough.

03.01.2022 2000 hard-working Australians are losing their jobs because Alan Joyce wants the work to get done a bit cheaper, so he can justify his multi-million dollar salary. It’s absolutely sickening.

02.01.2022 The Liberals have added a grand total of 5 houses to Tasmania’s social housing, in the middle of a housing affordability crisis. Peter Gutwein just doesn’t get it.

02.01.2022 Scott Morrison is the first Prime Minister in more than 20 years to freeze the pension. And hes doing it during a recession.

02.01.2022 Nice write up on the lovely town of Sheffield in this tourism blog.

02.01.2022 When Tasmanians struggle to scrape a few bucks together for petrol in order to get to a job interview, this really takes the cake. And he's one of the Liberals who drew up the infamous 2014 Budget where Australians were divided into "lifters and leaners"! The Liberals think they can do anything.
