25.01.2022 Its been a real privilege representing our local community at the council table for the past four years. Given the new ward boundaries, I intend on running for the new Toomuc Ward (here is a map https://www.cardinia.vic.gov.au//new_ward_boundaries_for_c) In stage 4 restrictions, most campaign activities are prohibited. However, Im looking for volunteers who would be happy to host an election sign on their front lawn (residents who live in Toomuc Ward) or spend an hour ...on letterboxing when these restrictions are eased. If this is something youd be interested in, please fill out the attached form. Every bit of help would be greatly appreciated! https://forms.gle/F8iQx4KAmGv2Ay8u7

25.01.2022 Here is some great news! If you live in Cardinia youll soon be able to put all your food waste into your garden waste bin, which will then be turned into compost

24.01.2022 In three months, Cardinia Shire will have a brand new council. I thought I would take a few minutes out to write a blog about what is like to be a councillor. My aim is to give people who are thinking of running a bit more of an insight into the role. I have also answered the common questions I get asked (e.g. how much do you get and what is the role of a councillor) A Guide to Cardinia https://michaelschilling.com.au//life-as-a-local-governmen

24.01.2022 During this election period, we've been doing the best we can to get out virtually and meet with our community. Thank you to Naomi Horsley - Candidate for Central Ward Cardinia Shire for providing us with another opportunity to hear our residents' ideas for the next council term.

24.01.2022 One of the biggest pieces of work I advocated on being completed during this term of council was the new PB Ronald Masterplan for Central Pakenham Being a precious piece of open space, its essential we get this right. The draft plan has now been developed and is open for public discussion. I have written a blog to provide a bit more detail about the project. The link to the consultation is at end of the blog. https://michaelschilling.com.au//pb-ronald-reserve-master-

24.01.2022 Thank you Leticia Wilmot - Ranges Ward for your 8 years of service to our community. Over the past 4 years not only have you been a great mentor, but also a fantastic friend. You are one of the most progressive and compassionate people I know, and its been a pleasure to serve on the council with you. Im sure youll be greatly missed by the community

24.01.2022 This is a great little project from Jordan Crugnale MP. If youre a local artist this opportunity might be for you.

23.01.2022 Based on a council report, well need an extra 9 basketball courts by 2030 to keep up with the growth of the sport. Cardinia Life has served us well, but its time for an upgrade. One of my key priorities if re-elected is to advocate for the Cardinia Life expansion, including 4 new basketball courts this will allow for better training opportunities and scheduling of games This current budget has $155k allocated for the planning, but itll be up to the next council to lobby for funding and grants to make this project a reality over the next council term. This planning money was as a result of a notice of motion moved by Brett Owen Candidate for Beacon Hills Ward, Cardinia Shire in Nov 2019.

23.01.2022 Spoonville International has come to Pakenham. Thanks so much to the Cardinia Art Society for bringing this bit of magic to Lakeside, Pakenham, during these uncertain times.

20.01.2022 Within our 2 hours of exercise Im now allowed to letterbox and put up signs. Sure it will take a little longer, but well get there in the end. First stop was Arena in Officer followed by putting up some signs.

20.01.2022 With the support of one of Cardinia Councils COVID-19 Arts Response grants and the Star News Group, local artist and writer, Jenni Ivins, is making a board game based on the map of Cardinia Shire and our experiences in isolation. It will be published as a fold-out section in the @Pakenham-Berwick Gazette, for people to play at home. Basically, the project works like this 1. Participants comment on their time in self-isolation (in the A Part Together Facebook group). 2. From ...the comments, Jenni makes a list of 10 items for people to draw - one item per drawing. 3. People post photos of their drawings in the A Part Together Facebook group or send them to Jenni by messenger or email [email protected] 4. Jenni uses the drawings to design the board game and game pieces. 5. The game will be published as a fold-out in the Pakenham-Berwick Gazette and available as a PDF, so people can play at home. Would you or your community like to take part? Choose something to draw that shows your time in isolation then post it in the A Part Together Facebook group, or email the pictures to Jenni [email protected].

20.01.2022 Thanks to the Lakeside Residents Group for bringing this proposal to me. Cardinia Shire Council are currently undertaking a new public toilet strategy, which will look at gaps in the public toilet network and look at how we can better improve our public toilet facilities.

19.01.2022 My forum with guest speaker Ben from A Guide to Cardinia is only 5 days away. With only a few spots left, please dont forget to register

19.01.2022 A massive thank you to everyone that came to my online forum tonight. Its great to be able to connect with our community in these uncertain times. As usual Ben from A Guide to Cardinia was a fantastic guest speaker.

16.01.2022 During these uncertain times, its heartwarming to see such a fantastic initiative from the Gurdwara Siri Guru Nanak Darbar Officer and the Follow Baptist Church, who are reaching out to our community to make life just that bit better. Thank you for everything you do.

16.01.2022 Toomuc Ward is a great place to call home as we have some terrific facilities right at our doorstep. In the not so distant future, we can add the Officer District Park to this list. I have noticed overflowing bins around the lake, especially over weekends. I have written to council requesting increased services to have these bins emptied on a more regular basis.

16.01.2022 The local government election will be going ahead this year, with ballot papers being sent out from the 6th of October. Enrolments close next Friday - you can check your current enrolment details here:https://www.vec.vic.gov.au/enrolment/check-my-details https://pakenham.starcommunity.com.au//green-light-on-el/

16.01.2022 Today I went back to work at the hospital after taking four weeks annual leave for the campaign. It’s the final stretch before ballots have to be posted off by this Friday. Thanks again to all the volunteers who have helped out over the past few weeks!

15.01.2022 Just a reminder that Im holding a virtual community meeting with Mayor Jeff Springfield on the 30th of July at 7:30pm. We might be in lock down, but that doesnt stop us from sharing ideas and discussing issues important to our community. I hope to see you there. You can sign up below

14.01.2022 With our community in a stage 3 lock down, we have to find new ways of connecting. On the 30th of July I will be joined by Mayor Jeff Springfield to give a brief community update on whats happening around the town. Well then be opening the forum to the floor to hear what issues are most important to you in our local community. Due to this being an online forum, we have capped numbers at 15. Look forward to seeing you there (tickets via eventbrite)

13.01.2022 Tonight I hosted my first online community forum. I would like to thank everyone who came along. With Covid-19 happening, we may not be able to meet in person, but we can still do our best to connect online. A big shout out to Mayor Jeff Springfield and Brett Owen - Ranges Ward, Cardinia Shire who came along and formed part of an impromptu councillor panel, which worked pretty well. We also had Jack Kowarzik - Candidate for Pakenham Hills Ward attend, after recently announ...cing his intention to run in the Pakenham Hills ward at the upcoming election. I look forward to doing this all again!

13.01.2022 As we head into stage 3 lock down tonight, I know things are going to be tough for a lot of people. One thing were very good at is sticking together as a community, and for that Im very proud and grateful. Although we cant meet face-to-face, Im still available for resident & community meetings online via Zoom. All you have to do is send me a PM or email at [email protected] and I can send you a meeting invite. I look forward to being able meet again in person, hopefully in the not so distant future.

13.01.2022 As we head into our 6 weeks of stage 4 lock-down, I urge everyone to take extra care of one another - even a phone call can make the world of difference. Always remember to obtain information from reliable sources - a great place to start is the link provided in this post. Councillors will be still working remotely, so please never hesitate to get in touch.

12.01.2022 More than ever its important to ask our friends, families and colleagues R U OK ? Picking up the phone and making a call can make the world of difference

12.01.2022 One of the things I enjoyed most this term of council was attending the Lakeside Residents Group social meetings to take part in an informal Q&A. If Im lucky enough to be re-elected, I look forward to continuing this tradition. All local residents leave these meetings well fed, with an amazing display of food provided by Graze It Up.

12.01.2022 This link is full of great information about the upcoming local government elections (especially if youre considering putting your hand up). For candidates, campaigning will look very different to what has ever happened before. https://www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/election2020

10.01.2022 Today nominations open for 2020 local government elections. Ill be attending the election office to nominate for Toomuc Ward. A while ago I wrote a blog about life as a councillor, for anyone interested here is the link https://michaelschilling.com.au//life-as-a-local-governmen

09.01.2022 Over the past four years, we have made some great progress when it comes to celebrating multiculturalism and standing up against racism. Working together, weve been able to: - Sign council up to the Racism. It Stops with Me campaign - Create our first ever CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) advisory group (thanks to Cr Leticia) ... - Develop a brand new Cultural Diversity Plan Prior to Covid, we were in the final stages of planning our Walk Against Racism. Whilst that has been put on hold for now, as soon as restrictions are over, well make sure the event goes ahead bigger and better. A big thank you to all of our community groups who have put on the most amazing events to celebrate our culturally diverse communities.

08.01.2022 The time has come for our July General Council Meeting. Given the State Governments directives that if possible we must work work from home, the decision has been made to hold tonights meeting remotely. As usual you can tune in from 7pm. https://www.youtube.com/user/CardiniaTV

08.01.2022 Thank you very much Naomi Horsley - Candidate for Central Ward Cardinia Shire for inviting me to your virtual morning tea tomorrow. This is a great opportunity for locals to catch up with some of their candidates for an informal conversation.

08.01.2022 Today Cardinia Shire Council has began re-opening playgrounds across the shire. More detailed information on council response to Covid can be found here: https://www.cardinia.vic.gov.au//changes_to_council_servic

04.01.2022 Candidates were given the opportunity last week by Cardinia CAN to answer 5 questions: 1The expense of Rates is a frequent complaint from ratepayers. What are your thoughts on the current legislation of ‘capped rates increases’, and how would you achieve lower rates? 2With new estates often comes the unsightly issue of the illegal dumping of rubbish. What can council do to help keep our neighbourhoods clean, and would you support additional enforcement officers in Cardin...ia? 3Roads in our Shire vary dramatically in quality, surface and speed limits. Which is your future priority road issue to be fixed? 4Councillors are paid an allowance for their positions and additionally can claim incurred expenses in the execution of their duties. Do you believe that this system is fair to ratepayers, or do you think changes need to be made? 5Cardinia CAN is focused on helping to boost our local economy through growth of consumer awareness in the importance of shopping local, and supporting local small business. How can council better support the growth and success of local business? Here were my responses, given within the 5min limit. Once again thank you to David at Cardinia CAN for giving candidates the opportunity.

04.01.2022 With the elections only 8 weeks away and stage 4 restrictions in place, its impossible to get out into the community to make a video. I thought for this campaign Id try something a little bit differnet. Here is my intro into my local government campaign for Toomuc Ward .

02.01.2022 Thanks to the Pakenham-Berwick Gazette for this great story about our beloved local lakeside swans! Im glad we could find a solution, that will hopefully keep them safe whilst we continue to watch their little babies grow (from a distance).

02.01.2022 A huge thanks to Michael Wright for the endorsement video. Michael has done a heap of amazing work around preventing family violence and disability advocacy. I really appreciate Michaels support and confidence.

02.01.2022 Here is something that we can all look forward to!

01.01.2022 We have always known that this will be an election like no other. Yesterday the government released new guidelines that state, from the 14th of Sept candidates can letterbox and deliver election signs within their 2 hours of daily exercise (must not breach the 5km rule)! If you live in Toomuc Ward and would be happy to host a sign, I am able to come put one up within my 2 hours of daily activity (no contact). Please send me a PM if you can help out
