25.01.2022 Joe nailing this tricky phrase from Bachs Toccata in Dm. A no brainer for him lol! After doing some pop for a while, hes finding Fur Elise, Rondo alla Turca and the Toccata more his thing. Proud of Joe!

25.01.2022 Xmas boogie - student Will rocking Milts Boogie

24.01.2022 Here is my student Clementine* playing her own composition. She’s been playing by ear for about three years since starting with me. I find that most students automatically will start composing if they’ve started their playing with learning by ear. We do sight-reading practice as well but only after addressing the instrument first, usually I ask for a repertoire of ten pieces learnt by ear before we start sight reading. This strategy for learning by ear before reading music i...s supported by much research done in the last fifty years, and which I used in my own research into this area for my Master’s degree. One of my favourite analogies is that you drive a car without knowing how a car works! It may be good for mechanically minded people to know that, and enjoy knowing that, but for most people driving the car without having to think about it what matters. Procedural knowhow is more important than theoretical knowledge (Grauhn and Rauscher, 2002). See more

23.01.2022 River, 4 yrs and 3 months, and Ali Penney's grand daughter, wow what a talent! Though she was too shy to play in the first two lessons today in lesson 3 she showed her true colours after practising at home with her grandma Nanny, who got her over the line to sit by herself with me - she did both grannies and herself so proud!!

22.01.2022 Hi students. After all the hard work of learning a piece it's so much fun to just play it for yourself at home. Ted McAllister was just telling me that a few weeks ago. And if you're playing for me or anyone else, enjoy the opportunity to share your playing and don't worry about mistakes, I just made 3 in that video! Best from your good ole teach, Bridie

21.01.2022 This HSC Music I student offers a personal insight into why she prefers learning a greater variety of music by ear than conforming to regular exam based piano tuition

21.01.2022 The stage was set for a lovely end of year concett. Devoted grandma, Bev Firth, sent me this msg...'Bridie. Thanks for a beautiful concert. It was a magical hour of music and endeavour. I thought my team all did well, phew, but Angus made me cry. He was so into it.' Bev is a champion, she encourages her four grandkids to learn piano with me. She only ever gives all her attention during the lessons, never ever on her phone! #glebepianolessons #sydneypianolessons #devotedgrandma #grandmapiano

21.01.2022 One of the best affirmations ever! If her wish came true we would still be having lessons when she was 67 and Id be 125 - so cute! This student improvises, composes, learns songs by ear and sight reads, she is a great student!

20.01.2022 Hey students, Im studying too right now! There are about 30 boogie- woogies and old school rnb songs from the 1940s and 50s that Im learning for my new project in 2020. This picture shows the old school recording techniques from back then..

19.01.2022 Being able to speak more fluently than we can read at age 7 is the basis for teaching to play be ear first and learning to sight read second. In this video Mieke is able to play this beginner version of Ray Charles Whatd I Say in her second lesson, quite well with a bit of effort, but there is no way she could read the notation and play the same music while sight reading. She started lessons last week. She practised the left hand at the lesson and a tiny bit at home during the on a cardboard keyboard. Today she learnt the right hand and was able to put two hands together. Well done Mieke! Thanks to her mum Amber Ma who had lessons from me at the same age, and grandparents Patty Nicholson and Danny Ma. #sydneypianolessons #glebepianolessons #playingbyear #playbyear

18.01.2022 Frank, one of the greatest little kids ever to come to me, hes already a muso - just pint size. At five, online lessons werent working for him so were back at Albert Ammons Boogie-woogie Street for lessons, using hand sanitiser and alcohol for cleaning keyboards of course. We are seen here with our masks and plastic gloves on (well his gloves were adult size and fell off, but mine stayed on) at the end of another fabulous session. He does two lessons a week, he has about 4 song/ tunes that he can play, outstandingly that includes Somewhere over the Rainbow melody and is learning the chords, 1st and 3rd only! Thanks mum Karola for the photo.

18.01.2022 Congratulations to my HSC student Julia Cantwell, she received 87% for her Music I mark!! Here she is singing one of her exam songs, River by Joni Mitchell, with me at my Rozelle Markets gig. She has a smooth, agile and light voice, perfect for folk, but she also can swing and got the examiners going with her Dream a Little Dream of Me, Calvin Welch reported. She had Calvin on drums and Matt Lamb to back her up on Dream. Well done, Julia!

18.01.2022 Affirmation from Will, who goes into year 6 in 2020 after making great prgress with his boogie-woogie and singing (We Are the Champions by Queen) this year. Thanks Will and well done!

17.01.2022 Student at our Piano Picnic 2019 plays Ramsey Lewiss Hard Days Night. This is all his own work, worked out by ear independently.

17.01.2022 River, 4 yrs and 3 months, and Ali Penneys grand daughter, wow what a talent! Though she was too shy to play in the first two lessons today in lesson 3 she showed her true colours after practising at home with her grandma Nanny, who got her over the line to sit by herself with me - she did both grannies and herself so proud!!

16.01.2022 Best wishes to Connor for his HSC Music I exam today! Hes come from about 3rd grade to this standard in three years, go Connor! Im sure youll blitz this and have an unforgettable day

16.01.2022 Here is my most senior student Brendon Stewart playing a little of his Siciliano by Bach. It’s wonderful to teach Brendon and all my adult students, including three new ones this year and two at the end of last year. I find that it’s not age that matters but the person as an individual. And not forgetting my current long term learning adult students who’ve been with me for years and continue to show great dedication and consistency. It may be interesting to note that I’ve fou...nd adults learn far more quickly than children. I believe it to be a fallacy that children learn faster and their brains retain better. For instance a young beginner student might learn a piece or phrase for 10 minutes, but when I show their parent (so they can help the child at home) they invariably get it straight away in maybe 1-2 minutes. It seems to me mature brains have had so much experience, especially with sending messages to hands and fingers. I’ve taught adults all my teaching career, which is coming up to 50 years, including 6 years for the Open Academy at Sydney Conservatorium. I‘ve always found it just as rewarding as teaching young people. I maintain it’s all about the individual. Their attitude, way of focusing, the level of their enjoyment, communication skills in the conversations we have, etc, are all more important than age. Age is secondary in my book! See more

14.01.2022 A picture of Connor at his last lesson with me after four years and reaching a high level of playing for his HSC. He was an outstanding student from day one and on the last day showed all the respect and gratitude a teacher could wish for. And Sid was there too.

14.01.2022 Wills work on We Are The Champions is great, tricky chords and singing no less! His current reperoitre includes Sugar Chile Robinsons Caledonia, Milt Buckners Boogie, and Moondance. Hes also playing Georgia which he transcribed for playing on his alto saxophone. Btw hes been running for a few years now too and won a National Championship for cross-country this year. To further excel himself, Will has earned himself an all- round scholarship to Newington College, starting high school in 2021. Congratulations Will Cheshire, Roselle Gowan and Ben Cheshire.

13.01.2022 This diligent and keen 7 year old loves playing piano, hevhas learnt about 8 songs and pieces in 10 lessons - his proud parents and teacher have heard him nail Pink Panther before but he blew away his friends tonight at the Soiree

12.01.2022 Enthusiastic student plays Kids by MGMT - super fast and at 8am on a Saturday morning, impressed! :)

12.01.2022 Our first students Soiree did what it set out to do - kids socialising and having fun, with music the focus of the experience...hopefully setting a lifelong trend. Soulful feelings, perfection not needed!

12.01.2022 A beautiful affirmation from Katie Glendenning who brings 4 year JP to piano and now recorder. He is doing so well! Congratulations to both for great focus at lessons and at home, lessons are a joy with these two.

09.01.2022 2021 teaching piano has been great so far! Starting the year with all my students from last year (except one), starting with new students and catching up with an ex-student has been so nice!! Seb recently got in touch with me, which was a lovely surprise. We had great coffee session at Sappho’s Cafe in Glebe this week where I heard about his amazing life since he was my 14 year old student. After singing in his first rock band, then doing his HSC, he went os to follow his mu...sical passions. By hard work and enterprise he found himself working at the height of the European night club scene in Barcelona, from ages 18 - 22. He kept his head though, learnt and had valuable experiences, saved money, then went to LA where he did the ICON course music production course for two years. Now fate has brought him back to Sydney. His sister’s wedding and having to stay because of covid has given his ever resourceful nature a chance to shine again and he has used the opportunity to become a pro music producer in Sydney. Wow, and he is going to give one of my current students Koby, who is a mini Seb, a little work experience turn in his studio - thanks to Seb and it’s great to be friends with him as grown ups now. And good on his parents for encouraging his creativity after school! I bumped into his mum Corinne about 8 years ago and she was so proud of him even then, blazing his own trail in Spain. I am so blessed with the all the unique individuals who come to me for piano lessons, it is and has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with them all! See more

08.01.2022 At the Piano Picnic 2019 last night there were so many wonderful moments. This video show one of my senior students playing by ear, enjoying the fruits of his labour and learning to communicate with an audience. Ali known nationally as a blues queen of piano herself, started out her boogie woogie playing with guidance from me Im honoured to say, and River will soon be playing on my old Helpinstill stage piano.
