17.01.2022 Have you met Brooksidentals Hygienist Norma? Normas career as both Dental Therapist and Dental Hygienist has spanned across the public and private sector in general dental and orthodontic practices. She has also held mentoring and clinical teaching roles at Southbank TAFE and the University of Queensland. She has worked with a variety of communities and has spent time volunteering in Indigenous Health Clinics and also in Vietnam. Her next plan for volunteering is with ...a medical ship, which will assist communities in Papua New Guinea. Norma also holds a Public Health degree and is always keen to promote the importance of health. She aims to educate and guide her patients to achieve optimal oral health and reinforce the important link between oral and general health. Outside of work hours, Norma enjoys spending time with her family, especially her new grandson William, who has just had his first birthday. Her 92 year old Mum Betty, still enjoys outings with Norma and husband David, often to Scarborough once or twice each week. Health and fitness has always been of great importance and Norma is always ready for a new adventure! Last year a long awaited bucket list item was ticked off .. swimming with whale sharks off Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. An incredible and amazing experience! Norma and David love to travel and many countries have been visited. This year they enjoyed time in Tasmania and more recently spent a month in Scandinavia. Sometimes a combination of substances will increase a person's bleeding risk and it's important we know what these are in order to calculate and mitigate the risk. You may be aware that medicines like Aspirin and Warfarin m...ay cause increased bleeding but did you know that Alcohol, Tumeric, Fish oil, NSAIDs and SSRIs may have an effect too? Medicines that may increase bleeding risk include: *Warfarin *Dabigatran (Pradaxa) *Rivaroxaban (Xarelto) *Apixaban (Eliquis) *Aspirin *Clopidogrel (Plavix) *Ticagrelor (and sometimes combined with Aspirin) *Heparin *NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Voltaren, Naproxen, Celebrex) *SSRI's ( Cipramil, Lexapro, Prozac, Aropax, Zoloft, Fluvoxamine) Other substances that may increase bleeding risk include: Alcohol Tumeric Fish oil Krill oil Garlic Ginger Ginkgo Ginseng Vitamin E Evening Primrose Oil Dong Quai Feverfew Horse chestnut Licorice root Red clover Passionflower Meadowsweet Willow bark Cranberry Juice? 04.01.2022 Why do dentists take x-rays? By Dr Emma Broughton Dental x-rays are an important part of any comprehensive dental assessment and a useful diagnostic tool. They show us a lot of areas that aren't visible to the naked eye. For example, decay between the teeth often doesn't show any physical signs early on. It's only later when the holes are bigger that they become visible in a normal examination. Taking x-rays allows us to spot these problems far earlier. This means that w...e can address the problem when it's smaller, less painful and less expensive. If x-rays are safe, why do you all run out of the room to press the button? Haha! That must seem a little strange. As with most things, the danger of x-ray radiation is dose-dependent. Low levels won't harm you, but too much can be a problem. Did you know drinking too much water can kill you? While the amount of radiation from dental x-rays is low for our patients (who might only have two to four dental x-rays per year), dentists and dental staff can take up to forty x-rays in any given day! That adds up quickly, so we step out of the room to reduce how much radiation we are exposed to. What kind of things do you look for on x-rays? Depending on the type of x-ray we take, we can get information on multiple issues, including; - decay between the teeth - tooth infections and abscesses - health or disease of the bone that supports the teeth - wisdom teeth, and if they require extraction - leakage and other problems with fillings, crowns, root canals - bony fractures - dental anomalies like missing teeth, extra teeth or problems with tooth formation - some cysts and tumors #brooksidental, #brooksideshoppingcentre, #iloveevertonpark, #northsidedentists, Brookside Shopping Centre, Brooksidental
