While we all tend to pay pretty close attention to our nutrition while we are pregnant, it’s often the first thing that gets tossed aside once the baby is in our arms and sleep deprivation kicks in. Dr checkups generally become more about the baby and less about you; and while we are aware of the importance of eating for energy, those pick me ups tend to come from whatever is easy to grab and eat on the run and be beige in colour (hello vegemite toast!). Eating for wound healing, energy, milk production, immune function and mental health become far less important and survival becomes our main focus. So what can you do? Ensure you have postnatal blood tests done to check iron, Vitamin D, thyroid and B12 levels for optimal energy and immune function; If low in iron, get a good quality supplement (ask your nutritionist) that won’t cause constipation.
