24.01.2022 Today is not only International Firefighters' Day, but also the feast day of St Florian, the patron saint of all firefighters. St Florian was the first known co...mmander of a firefighting squad in the Roman Empire, and was responsible for organising and training an elite group of soldiers, whose sole duty was to fight fires. St Florian lost his life, along with his colleagues, for honouring the values of selflessness and bravery, values which are shared by firefighters all over the world.

08.01.2022 THERE WILL NEVER BE AS MANY FIRE TRUCKS AS THERE ARE HOUSES

08.01.2022 IF YOU PLAN to protect your home from bushfire it is critical to be aware of what element of the bushfire you are protecting it from. Not its flames. Its embers.... Do not move away from your house to try to fight approaching. It is extremely dangerous to do so. Especially if these are moving uphill. Houses can only catch alight from flames if vegetation has been allowed to grow within flame reach of windows or flammable cladding. Flame reach is two to three times the height of the burning substance. If shrubs and flammable trees have been pruned or moved back to more than this distance from a building, and grass kept short, it cannot be ignited by flames. If you have prepared for the bushfire season with good garden management ignition by flames can't happen. Bad news for bushfire vulnerable gardens are pencil pines, radiata pines, rough barked eucalypts, fine leaved native shrubs and chip bark mulch. Your job in protecting your home is to stay close to the house and douse embers. Throughout all this, wearing protective clothing is vital, as is keeping hydrated and avoiding heat stress. Some actions that can help this are going inside or into the shade from time to time, having a wetted, tightly rolled-up towel around your neck, or a cooling gel necktie. It is important to know that embers can start to fall half an hour before and for four hours after a fire front arrives. They can enter a house before nearby vegetation burns. If not seen and doused with hose, garden sprayer or mop, they ignite a cushion or curtain and move on through all the contents: furniture, clothes, equipment. Some of these will give off toxic gases; cleaning chemicals can explode. The internal fire rushes on through the house and contents if draughts can fan the flames, or creep through if it is well sealed and internal doors are closed. If they enter the roof space they can smoulder in ceiling dust until eventually rafters ignite and either the pressure of heat in the space builds up and lifts off the roof, or the ceiling collapses and ignites the rooms beneath, and the whole house flares up in flames. A spark or ember cant start any of this if someone sees it and puts it out. If you move away from the house to try to put out approaching flames, you not only endanger yourself, but your unobserved house. And the approaching flames will stop by themselves at your pre-managed garden: at bare earth, paths, driveway and fire resistant plants and non-flammable features. If an ember shower becomes too unpleasant to remain outside, you should need to shelter indoors for only 10-15 minutes. (While inside look, if it is easy to do so, to see if sparks have slipped under doors, but keep very near an exit door.) Fire fronts don't stay in the one spot for long as the vegetation they are in is consumed, they move on and ember falls become more sparse. Shrubs and other fine-fuel undergrowth flare up and die down very quickly, and once the flames of burning tree trunks appear separated they are no danger to life. Throughout all this, wearing protective clothing is vital, as is keeping hydrated and avoiding heat stress. Some actions that can help this are going inside or into the shade from time to time, having a wetted, tightly rolled-up towel around your neck, or a cooling gel necktie.
