14.01.2022 1985 Bustard Head Lightstation Eurimbula QLD Constructed - 1868... Automated - 1986 Automation... The period just prior to full automation of a lighthouse is a particularly busy time. Many modifications and maintenance tasks are required before the lighthouse can be left unattended. This usually involved the mobilisation of various technicians from the departments navaid depots as well as the lighthouse tender and her crew. The Bustard Head Lightstation became fully automated and unmanned in 1986. 09.01.2022 2014 Bustard Head Lighthouse Eurimbula QLD Constructed - 1868... Automated - 1986 A small spec on a vast headland. In 2001 the Bustard Head Lighthouse Association, a volunteer organisation led by ex lightkeeper Stuart Buchanan, obtained a twenty-year lease on the lightstation and started restoring it. They utilised funds from a federal grant, local businesses and self-funding. The station is now fully restored, and managed by the association. A local tour company, 1770Larc utilise amphibious LARC vehicles (Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo) to offer guided tours of the headland and surrounding areas, including the historical lightstation. The tour operator, owners and staff have played a major role in the lightstation restoration and public awareness program. If you happen to be in the area and want a great day out with an historical lighthouse thrown in, we highly recommend 1770Larc tours. @1770larc https://www.facebook.com/1770Larc/ https://1770larctours.com.au/ Photos AMSA & 1770Larc #bustardhead #1770larc #eurimbula #lighthouseaustralia

09.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY Bustard Head Lighthouse Circa 1930. You might think this could very well be the first picture ever taken of Bustard Head Lighthouse. However th...e lighthouse tower was already over 60 years old when this moment in time was captured. Over a 150 years later and not much has changed at the isolated "Lighthouse of Tragedy".

07.01.2022 Could you imagine spending years at a time on a remote island? This was the life of lighthouse keepers' families in the 1960s. #RetroFocus

07.01.2022 An interesting sea story....

05.01.2022 You may have seen media reports that the Queensland Maritime Museum (QMM) is to on the point of closing. QMM has struggled to be financially sustainable over m...any years and as a result of COVID this year our revenue has been down about $250,000. QMM management is working on a financial recovery strategy before year’s end. While arguably the second largest maritime museum and having the largest collection of lighthouse equipment in Australia QMM has never been included in the State Government’s museum programs so have had only sporadic funding. Much of the display equipment is equipment you have worked on and preserved during your working lives. Col Gladstone, Dave Shearer and Jack Duvoisin with a couple of excellent colleagues form QMM’s lighthouse team. Over the years the Museum community has changed dramatically, many of the earlier trade based volunteers have passed on and we have been unable to replace them with trade based people. Also the minimal funding has worked against QMM employing higher level professional museum staff. As part of our recovery QMM is seeking to extend the membership base, to both increase revenue and become a stronger organisation. The information below details the new membership arrangements. Many of us have enjoyed lots of happy times at QMM and particularly the 2015 CLS Centenary celebrations. As I write this it occurs to me that that event has been a major factor keeping us together in the following years.. You might consider taking up a QMM Membership or joining the Friends group, even for just one year would help to strengthen QMM at this difficult time. Memberships can be easily done on-line using the links below. If there are others you know who could provide financial support QMM would appreciate any approaches. Repackaging Membership at QMM - Membership Category Cost $ General $ 55.00 Corporate $ 55.00 Family $ 55.00 Life $ 500.00 Family $ 75.00 Annual Passes Family $ 80.00 Adult $ 35.00 Concession $ 30.00 Child $ 15.00 Friends of QMM benefits.. 02.01.2022 2008 Cape Cleveland Light North Queensland The Once Abandoned Station.... The light was automated in 1987 and was unmanned for several years. Both the light and the site were once operated by AMSA. The National Parks & Wildlife Service have since been given control of the site and have leased it to a local volunteer group who are currently working on a restoration project. The site is only accessible by boat or helicopter and generally closed to the public. However, volunteers are always welcome.
