23.01.2022 Are you backing up your computer? Now that you’re studying away from your school’s network, if you don’t have the right systems set up you could lose your work should something go wrong. Here’s how to automatically set up cloud-based backups using Google Drive (which is free if files are slightly compressed) and Microsoft One Drive (if you have an Office 365 account, you will have a terabyte of online storage with your subscription). GOOGLE DRIVE: To set real-time (continu...ous) backups with Google Drive, you’ll need to download its extension, Backup and Sync: google.com/drive/download/backup-and-sync. After launching the program, select which folders you’d like to have constantly synchronised with Google Drive from the My Laptop option. Next, select Back up all files and folders, choose your preferred storage size, and how it handles deleting backed up files that were deleted on your computer. If internet connectivity is a problem, under Settings you can limit the bandwidth upload and download rates to conserve data. MICROSOFT ONE DRIVE: On a Windows 10 device, sign into One Drive or make an account. To start, it’s a little symbol that looks like a cloud, typically located on the bottom right hand of your Taskbar (sometimes you need to click the up arrow to see it). Once it’s open and you’re signed in, you should be prompted to set up your backup through a popup with a Manage backup button. Select the folders you want to backup, then start the backup. This should allow for real-time, continuous backups also. DON’T WANT TO BACK UP TO THE CLOUD? Use the classic, external hard disk method. This takes more time, but you can manually connect your device and drag the files across. Once done, disconnect until you’re ready to do it againjust make sure you remember to back up often (ideally every day), as the time between backups is the information you will lose should something go wrong. 18.01.2022 To encourage harmony during virtual meetings, help reduce background noise by muting your microphone when not talking. Asking questions via the chat can also diminish the amount of people speaking over one another. Although it’s tempting, try not to multi-task as it can give you the appearance of not paying attention. Also remember to take pride in your appearance, as it’s a sign of respect for those you’re speaking with. If your room is busy or distracting, blur or change the background to help your team focus on what you’re saying, not your environment. Lastly, always remember to face your camera away from bright light sources, so others can see you properly!
