23.01.2022 HOW MANY DAYS HAVE YOU BEEN WEARING THOSE SOCKS!!?? Oh our mistake it's just the Durian graveolens in flower. Borneo born with lineage to the Malvaceae (Hibis...cus family) The raw pulp has been described as sweet & cheesy with a fragrance of roasted almonds or burnt caramel ......others might say ""...... An age old debate I'd say. Either way the stem and trunk born flowers are some sight! See more

17.01.2022 STUNNING DISPLAY from our Rothmania longiflora. A native to tropical Africa and when I enquired with Team Flecker about its perfect micro-climate, they said it ...is simply their husbandry techniques...braggers ....but they ain't far wrong! Nice result team !! This one is easily located just on the left of the path before the conservatory main doors! See more

17.01.2022 Emerging Ariod Flowers (Peace Lily Family and Smelly Flowers) in the conservatory are drawing lots of attention recently, so when you visit keep an eye out for ...this interpretative sign. It's a great resource that offers a simple symbolic representation of the life journey inherent with Arum type species. You may find it will answer most introductory questions you may have about this family and also your favourite....Amorphophallus titanum or Corpse Lily (with Halloween on the horizon!!) See more

16.01.2022 A beautiful hot day for a walk in the Gardens

16.01.2022 New to the Conservatory: Native Tropical Orchid Display Thanks to the generous support of the Australian Orchid Foundation, the orchid-growing community at lar...ge, and the Australian Tropical Herbarium, we have installed a display of Australian tropical native orchids in the conservatory. This is located to the right of the main orchid display, on the western side of the structure. The display is comprised of species and hybrids from northern Australia, with a few close relatives from New Guinea thrown in for good measure. The goal of the display is to highlight the diversity of orchids from our region, while at the same time showing that many of them are very easy to grow - especially the horticulturural hybrids. 15.01.2022 CRAZY DIVERSITY! Some 'out there' examples of variation in the Amorphophallus genus on display in the Conservatory at the moment. This Amorphophallus laoticus ...exhibits a pubescent spadix! (The pointy end bit) Right below is the shorter family member Amorphophallus paeoniifolius. We've included some internal close ups of the yellow pollen strands releasing from the small receptive male floral parts. Pretty cool huh!! See more

10.01.2022 Green Heliconia flowers... what's the point? Typically, when we think of Heliconias, we think of brightly coloured, highly decorative blooms that really stand o...ut against a green background. However, some species have drab, green flowers, like Heliconia solomonensis (pictured below). The big question is.... why? The answer lies in both geography and ecology. Most Heliconia species are from South America, where their main pollinators are hummingbirds. These birds see colours like red very well, so the flowers are often red to attract them. However, H. solomonensis is one of a few outlying species from the Solomon Islands and New Guinea, where its main pollinators are bats. Because the bats visit the flowers at night, there is no need for bright colours. Although H. solomonensis flowers aren't as brightly coloured as those of its South American cousins, at Cairns Botanic Gardens, we think it's every bit as interesting and it's just about our favourite species. 06.01.2022 NO RAIN ABOUT IN CAIRNS BUT....Cairns Botanic Gardens are certainly getting SHOWERS OF ORCHIDS!!! Congea tomentosa with a common name of ...yep you guessed it...!! Shower of Orchid Endemic to Myanmar and Thailand and also found in South East Asia. The actual flowers are tiny and inconspicuous and the bracts are the showy bits for attracting pollinators. Same deal with old faithful Bougainvillea when you peek inside the colourful parts you can see the actual tiny white flower! The Congea is on your left as you walk through the western entrance gates...can't miss it!!

06.01.2022 'The gift that keeps on giving!' Again our Amherstia nobilis is putting on a show. You'll find her on our attached map in Fitzalan Reserve opposite the Cairns ...Botanic Gardens. Native to Burma hence the Common Name 'Pride of Burma' and the scientific name commemorates Lady Amherst, a British naturalist and botanist who resided in India. You'll also see a few of these throughout the precinct as well so keep an eye out! Enjoy! See more

06.01.2022 PACKING SOME STENCHY PUNCH!! This Amorphophallus decus - silvae x variabilis Is some historic work contributed by a previous nursery manager. Thanks for lea...ving your legacy "Jacko"....we may need a bucket!! For those interested there may be some remnant pleasures for your senses left over in the conservatory if you're keen. Even though it's a dwarfed cousin of A.titanum by comparison, it sure offers a generous nose and showy visual display also! Happy sniffing! Oh also be sure to be very gentle on the approach to this guy as the inflorescence is extremely fragile and we’d be very sad to see it damaged. Enjoy See more

04.01.2022 HANGING WITH THE LOCALS! Introducing Syzygium wilsonii or the Powder Puff Lilypilly and there's no questioning the 'why?' for that common name !! This speci...es is endemic to the far north Queensland rainforests, from Ingham to Cooktown, in lowland rainforests from sea level to 600-700m. Its location in the gardens emulates such an environment too. Absolutely stunning with terminal large, fluffy heads hanging below pendulous branches from spring to summer. The tropics put on a show even in low light !! As usual we've slotted in a map image so you know where its growing :) See more

04.01.2022 Conservatory Make-over! We've made some changes to a couple of the beds in the conservatory... Things have been growing so well for the last few months that som...e beds have been getting a little congested. So, we took the opportunity provided by the sunny weather this week to re-vamp a couple of them, expanding our range of palms and opening up the views a little. We hope you'll enjoy watching the new plantings as they become established over the next few months. See more
