19.01.2022 Today is Suicide Prevention Day and R U OK? Day. This year we are highlighting that there’s more you can say and do after asking ‘R U OK?’. Asking ‘R U OK?’ Is a great first step in looking out for someone you care about, but it’s also important to know how to keep the conversation going. And, if your gut is telling you something isn’t right, to know how to encourage them to get help. You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not... OK. Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life: 1. Ask R U OK? 2. Listen 3. Encourage action 4. Check in. 12.01.2022 Thunderstorm asthma is triggered by massive loads of small pollen allergen particles being released into the air with fast changes in wind, temperature and humidity. When it rains or is humid, pollen grains can absorb moisture and burst open, releasing hundreds of small pollen allergen particles that can enter the small airways of the lungs. If a thunderstorm is approaching on a high pollen count day, it is a good idea to:... - make sure you have your reliever medication with you - stay inside a building or a car, especially during the wind gusts before the rain - close your doors and windows - if an air conditioner is on, set it to recirculate air. If you have or have had asthma or hay fever, you can help protect yourself from thunderstorm asthma by managing those conditions well and planning for emergency situations. 09.01.2022 Mental illness is very common. 1 in 5 people experience symptoms of mental illness each year. That’s more than 5 million people in Australia. The most common of these illnesses are anxiety and depression. 06.01.2022 Let's talk about "DIABETES". Type 2 diabetes develops when the body does not make enough insulin or does not use insulin efficiently. Insulin is a hormone that the body needs to break down glucose (sugar) in food so it can be used for energy. Did you know diabetes... - Is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults? - Is a leading cause of kidney failure? - Is the leading cause of preventable limb amputations? - Increase a person’s risk of heart attacks and stroke by up to four times? It’s about time you made ‘me time’, took time out and put you first. There is no time to lose. The earlier type 2 diabetes is detected, the more lives will be saved. 05.01.2022 Let's talk about "Diabetes". Hypoglycaemia, sometimes called a hypo or low, is a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose level (BGL) has dropped too low, below 4mmol/L. It is important to treat a hypo quickly to stop the BGL from falling even lower and the person becoming seriously unwell. Hypoglycaemia can be caused by one or a number of events, such as:... Too much insulin or other glucose lowering diabetes tablets Delaying or missing a meal Not eating enough carbohydrate Unplanned physical activity More strenuous exercise than usual Drinking alcohol - the risk of hypoglycaemia increases, the more alcohol you drink The most common early warning signs of hypoglycaemia are: Sweating feeling shaky fast heart beat sudden hunger headache Hypoglycaemia needs to be treated with quick acting food: A glass of juice 5-7 jelly beans a glass of soft drink (NOT diet) a glass of cordial (NOT diet) 2 Teaspoons honey or sugar For further information, please visit the following links: https://www.type1foundation.com.au/hypoglycaemia https://www.ndss.com.au//managing-hypoglycaemia-fact-sheet/ https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au//conditi/hypoglycaemia #YourLateNightChemist #HealthMatters #WeKnowWhatMatters #CommunityPharmacy #NDSS #BetterHealth #DiabetesAustralia

02.01.2022 It’s been a particularly wet spring season with elevated pollen levels this year. Combined with the severe storms we’ve been experiencing across the ACT, this h...as made many Canberrans more alert to the possibility of thunderstorm asthma events occurring. Thunderstorm asthma is a rare event caused by a combination of high grass pollen and a specific kind of thunderstorm, causing pollen to be swept up in the wind and carried long distances. People with asthma and hay fever are at risk of asthma symptoms during a thunderstorm. Thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening for people with asthma or hay fever. Thunderstorm asthma events are rare. However, when they do happen, it’s generally when grass pollen levels are at their highest (between October to December). We will issue a public health alert if there is a possibility that a thunderstorm asthma event may occur in our region. Reduce your risk of thunderstorm asthma: If you suffer from asthma or hay fever, see your doctor and make sure you have an up-to-date action plan in place. Use a preventer medication during the spring pollen/thunderstorm season, after checking with your doctor. Stay inside during thunderstorms and close the windows, especially during the wind gusts that come before a storm. Check the pollen levels via the AirRater app and avoid exposure to pollen. If you develop asthma symptoms, follow your asthma action plan. More info: http://bit.ly/pollenseason

01.01.2022 NEW RESTRICTIONS FOR TRAVELLERS TO AND FROM VICTORIA From 11.59pm tonight Monday 6 July, anyone arriving into the ACT from the greater Melbourne area will... be required to go into quarantine for 14 days after leaving or return back to their home jurisdiction as soon as possible. Those entering the ACT from Victoria, but from outside the greater Melbourne area, must monitor for symptoms of COVID-19. As the NSW and Victoria border temporarily closes, the ACT will be implementing further protections for Canberrans. From 12.01am Wednesday 8 July, the ACT border will be closed to all Victorians. ACT residents returning to the Territory from Victoria are required to complete 14 days of quarantine, beginning from their date of departure. Any non-ACT residents will not be allowed to enter the ACT from Victoria without an exemption. Canberrans are strongly advised not to travel to Victoria for any reason other than absolutely essential purposes.
