23.01.2022 Really handy simple tips on getting out there. Importantly, remember to practise the tips in your everyday life. Yes even on weekends when you are chatting with all sorts of people.

23.01.2022 Watch the number of large corporate businesses announcing cost cutting exercises. It makes you wonder how much fat and wastage there is in these organisations.

22.01.2022 Fossil fuels vs. Renewable Energy Forward looking move by Norway, which itself is a major producer of North Sea Oil & Gas. Electric cars will be more common in 10 - 20 years as major companies cease making carbon fueled vehicles.

22.01.2022 Capstone Consulting and I have been in business now for 10 years. I am thankful to all my clients for all their support over the years. I am grateful for the opportunities to work with them. It is gratifying to be still working with clients who I have been helping for the past 10 years and who have successfully grown their businesses. Some of these businesses are now owned by the next generation of shareholders. I look forward to continuing my work with these clients and the new ones to come.

19.01.2022 #business #management #technology #projectmanagement Congratulations to one of my clients - MDE Group, electrical contractors; award winners for delivering a large scale communications and electrical project. The project is the new Commonwealth Bank hub at Redfern Technology Park to house up to 10,000 technology and operations staff. Completed on time and on budget. ... Grateful for the opportunity to work with great owners and managers for over 11 years looking after the financial management of MDE.

19.01.2022 Highly recommend Hai Nguyen for your next project.

18.01.2022 a thought for this long weekend in Sydney - "Entrepreneurs Who Sleep More Are Better At Spotting Good Ideas" (Harvard Business Review) Hope you have a relaxing and safe weekend!

17.01.2022 This is NOT an article on BUDGETING. Here we discuss strategies for planning and action in fast changing times. Traditional budgeting tends to be fixed and works when the business conditions are steady.... Organisations plan in order to achieve outcomes which typically exceed normal standard outcomes. The "how to" factors require learning, adapting and growing and enables adjusting to the changing environment. The Covid pandemic initiated changes in product and service offerings (restaurants making and selling sourdough bread), and WFH meetings with customers via Zoom. Planning and action succeeds by rolling out of effective changeable strategies. Example - better technology as part of product and service delivery, investments for changes in product - hand sanitisers, public safety in retail / medical centres, staff training, increased online sales and related logistics. Its okay to change forecasts each month in accordance with the changing conditions. Events like the pandemic are novel so traditional planning is obsolete. Having a "flight plan" provides better certainty for staff which in turn increases the corporate memory with respect to the ability to deal with change and the planning and action required to achieve business outcomes.

17.01.2022 Coming up very soon in this page - a series on Business Models and Mental Models as the keys to Business and Personal Success! Failure to get your models optimised means you will more likely be exerting extra effort for less return. Good examples include: getting the wrong customers or staff, spending too much on digital marketing, and failures in customer service quality.

17.01.2022 So how does In-N-Out maintain its margins? To start, the limited menu means reduced costs for raw ingredients. The company also saves money by buying wholesale and grinding the beef in-house. By doing its own sourcing and distribution, it likely saves 3% to 5% in food costs a year. It cuts out an estimated 6% to 10% of total costs by owning most of its propertiesmany bought years agoand not paying rent. In-N-Out picks its locations carefully, clustering them near one another and close to highways to lower delivery costs while also avoiding pricey urban cores. It has just one location within the city limits of Los Angeles and one in San Francisco, while many Shake Shacks are smack in the center of town.

14.01.2022 YOUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE IN BUSINESS Of course its people ! The English model (in this article) which is also similar in New Zealand aims to look after stood down employees to the tune of 80% of normal wages.... There are distinct advantages to this: - Companies are likely to retain their staff once normality returns. This continuity is invaluable - the efficient flow of business processes is retained by retaining staff. - The huge cost of recruiting and training new staff is avoided. - Staff do not have to queue at Centrelink to get money to survive. - Staff reduce the likelihood of catching the virus. - Reduced medical costs from lower infections and mental stress. - Lower crime - theft to survive and domestic violence from poverty stress. - Unemployment is reduced substantially. - Families are better looked after. There is a small delay getting the system going; a small inconvenience given the situation.

13.01.2022 Happy Friday ! Thanks to the ABC for an inspiring and uplifting article - on the journey of every person. In this case, how with a bit of help from our fellows, we can all achieve much on this journey of life and achieve our purpose. On networking:... - Connecting with people is vital for a having a healthy sense of belonging and develops / maintains self confidence; - As Kaley discovered - be interested in other people and absorb their experiences - like growing a pearl, it adds to your collective knowledge of people and concurrently tells you that you are like every other person - with personal strengths and areas which you may want to develop. - There are many networking opportunities including Kaleys strategy of lunching. Theres also Business Chamber meetings, BNI breakfasts, LinkedIn Local, and more. - Great way to develop referral marketing skills. One of the keys in Kaleys experience is developing a sense of clear purpose - see her lunch experience with a millionaire. On purpose As a business owner, it is useful to have and keep evolving your purpose and how to set goals accordingly to achieve purpose. Think about this - in business you excel at what you do and in so doing you look after your customers well. So, revenue and profit flows from your purpose!

12.01.2022 Great to see one of my clients (based in Terrigal) in the short list for the Central Coast Business awards. Well done Brent

12.01.2022 Well hello! Were talking about ice cream sales in July. July being the 3rd biggest sales month in the year !!! Its a great reminder to business operators to be constantly thinking about how to innovate your products and services, including superior service.... When you do this, as shown in the SMH story, your business will be successful despite factors such as seasons, weather, the economy, competition and more. And it makes it so much easier to market especially with digital marketing. Bring it on ! See more

12.01.2022 Great article from Ross Gittins in the SMH making clear the distinction between Government Budgets, the overall economy, and jobs. I hope that he can add more articles suggesting how the overall economy can be restructured or renewed in keeping with the times including fit with global economies and the opportunities presenting. COVID-19 has presented a window of opportunity for the Australian government, businesses and society to change so as to build a greater country, Perha...ps a Hawke style summit would facilitate dialogue of ideas and facilitate strong action points. Forced change has already started happening - work from home, use of online technology, evolving work practices, tele-health, air travel, vehicle usage and more. It does not appear that the Government, industry groups, and others have had the time or inclination to put the thinking caps on to date. Hopefully the Government does not revert to a small government mindset and defer to and rely on business and the so called free markets to work Australia back into jobs. The flaw in this approach is that there is asymmetry in free markets - - Large companies wield more power. - Technology usage is not optimised. NBN is a paradox of government intervention resulting in a flawed product. - Work practices are evolving - WFH, technology, part time work, etc. - Business models are changing. - Moral hazards - environmental damage incurred at societal expense. - Rent seeking - cash economies (avoiding taxes), monopolies in utilities - energy, infrastructure (roads & airports) Government at Federal and State levels have a more active role to play. To some extent this has happened by necessity during the pandemic. Suggestions include Government spending to get (new) industries & technologies working: - Investing in large scale renewable energy projects; likely owned by the people of Australia. - Subsidies for domestic, educational & commercial solar projects (definitely get the electricians working). - Renewable energy powered air conditioning for schools. - Funding for universities and TAFES - attracting foreign students to a safe health country AND generating Australian graduates with capabilities in sciences, engineering and education (the jobs of today and the future). - Subsidies for apprentice training - a big shortage ongoing in Australia. - Spending on health - did we learn something from COVID-19; more trained healthcare workers with appropriate remuneration. Government spending with short and long term outcomes in jobs and economic prosperity must happen to build a strong Australia. Failure to do so will result in a malingering drawn out recession with the resultant social and economic costs in health and well being and crime and a divided unhappy society.

11.01.2022 Good article in the SMH. "Supply and demand are being clear felled" Better get your essential personal services done in the next 48 hours - haircuts, wills done, chiropractor, etc.... If you have a business where you can work from home, make sure you have it adequately set up - technology, tools, supplies, etc. After Tuesday, most businesses will be shut apart from essential services. So its likely that theres no Officeworks, Harvey Norman, CBD lawyers, accountants, financiers, etc. No I cant be definitive here as its not clear from the government so far. Do not buy equipment for the sake of the government incentives unless youre sure that you will have customers and need the equipment. Keep your spending down. The view of the world as of today is that only essential services (below) will operate. Dont know about construction sites - will find out tomorrow. - supermarkets - banks - petrol stations - pharmacies - convenience stores - freight and logistics - food delivery Presumably, home businesses can operate; especially if services are delivered online. Larger companies in the services sector will continue to operate with a Work from Home framework. The government wants people to stay home. As the article says, the governments will need to support consumers and businesses via cash handouts. This will enable people to live a basic reclusive life at home. Loans are somewhat pointless unless youre one of the above essential businesses. Presumably Medical Centres and public transport are included. Lets hope that the government comes back asap with targeted cash handouts to keep the general population able to buy food and shelter. Which is a lot of people who are business owners or employees.

11.01.2022 A good article with great ideas on the opportunities presenting at the moment to reshape the Australian economy and industry. What is happening currently is akin to a war situation. For Australia to be firstly safe medically and economically requires some ahead of the curve thinking and good leadership. We must take steps to flatten the disease curve and concurrently invest to save jobs and businesses and ultimately come out with a restructured economy.... Hopefully the government acts quickly ahead of the curve. To do so requires listening to the appropriate experts and even work in partnership with all of parliament.

11.01.2022 #business #management #vision #businessstrategy #familybusiness #successionplanning #planning #leadership Business owners and managers are invariably busy working in their businesses sorting out todays issues and challenges - customers, production, service delivery, staff, suppliers, cash flows and so on. Every day and every week. Gone are the days when you had the luxury of taking on more people to handle the everyday "logistics" of business. Global and local competition... means that firms cannot simply raise their prices to pass on increased costs. Instead there is ongoing downward pressure on selling prices. Think of disruption in your business as continual innovation, which nowadays is a must for any business. - Innovation in products and service delivery - customer focus is paramount. - Best use of technology in marketing, sales, production, service delivery and administration. - Staff training and culture development with innovation, efficiency and customer focus as core values of a business At Capstone Consulting, the above is a feature of my work with clients. And yes, Dr Ivan Misner is 100% correct, innovative thinking and doing will get you out of your "concept recognition model". So that you dont go the way of Kodak, Blockbuster Video and others. And yes, all this applies to smaller businesses too.

10.01.2022 Ross Gittins ongoing commentary on the economy is again on point. He does leave you hanging on for his next article. There wont be a SnapBack - No tourists or foreign students, companies like Flight Centre, Qantas have shrunk and consumer spending has dropped. Government stimulus will be required. ... Important for business owners to reimagine and remodel their businesses starting with addressing the new normal of customer needs. Seek help and advice from the right sources as required. Stay safe.

09.01.2022 These are very unusual times and if you as a business owner or manager are looking at making changes with your staff, we recommend that you consult with your employment lawyer or Fair Work Office (free consultation).

08.01.2022 Happy Friday! The week continues to be dominated by the virus and its impact on society and commerce. Its been quite a year so far in this part of the world with the bushfires, drought, floods, storms, and now the COVID-19 virus and its economic impact. ... In business, this reminds us of the constant requirement to be conscious of the world around us and to plan ahead continually to mitigate and manage risks. A holistic mindset and model s required. Look after yourself (physical and mental fitness), your staff and contractors / suppliers. Ask people R U OK? Always have personal and business insurance for hopefully the unlikely disasters. Make your business financially healthy with cash reserves. Keep strengthening your business model. These are normal requirements to build and have a sustainable business looking after your customers. Feel free to contact me to discuss or if youre stuck.

08.01.2022 Interesting video from Inderpreet Singh M who owns and runs an excellent Indian restaurant in Lavender Bay, Sydney. Its high quality food delivered with fine service.

07.01.2022 A good article summarising the thinking required in selecting roles & jobs. - Applies to both young and not so young. - Now is a good time to take stock and plan ahead; even if already employed or in business. - Yes, you can apply the same thinking in starting or changing your own business. - Seek advise from people who have been there or HR advisers.... - Be agile and broad in your thinking - be open to possibilities. - Keep learning new skills however "small" they may be; including people skills. - Be positive and visualise your goals ongoing. 07.01.2022 The opportunity to network outside your usual ecosystem is enriching because you learn so much from the wonderful talented human beings who you meet. The mutual business opportunities then come along naturally.

04.01.2022 ISO was and is a great opportunity to reflect on personal purpose and how to have and live a fulfilling life. We are all blessed with life energy, talents and personality. It is also useful to have core values enshrining attitudes of loving others as you do yourself. And doing unto others as you would like reciprocated. In business you may be able to choose better ways of living and working-... - four day weeks - more conscious collaboration - more time with family and friends - more time for exercise and relaxation - schedule creative time All the above helps in the workplace to be more purposeful, energetic and positive. And the resulting positive business outcomes.

03.01.2022 As competition increases in both B2B and B2C markets, it is vital for business owners, managers and staff to make the effort to differentiate their businesses. Cleanliness of shops, restaurants and offices makes for better customer experiences. Customers are then happier to return. I was having coffee and lunch with a colleague today and the cafe where we were sitting was noticeably dusty and needed a good clean. Whilst the salad I had was fresh, you automatically discounted the experience; as you do. Coming back? Hmmm...

03.01.2022 A One Off Opportunity Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.... We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.

02.01.2022 A great way to do business!!!

01.01.2022 We all are good to great at something in our lives - being a parent, a partner, or at work - whatever that may be. Yet its normal as human beings to be at times self conscious or self critical in terms of our outward behaviour or performance. Whats important is to use life experiences as learning to think better and do better next time. Its useful to keep in mind that there is no such thing as perfection or comparison to others. We set our own goals and benchmarks.... An open, curious and consciously positive mindset comes with daily practice. Count your blessings and live life to your best ability everyday :) See more
