25.01.2022 At CAN, we know that for so many of the people who live in Carlton, food isn't just about energy, it's the centre of their community. Wednesday's at CAN are food bank days. Second Bite deliver fresh food early in the morning, and it's shared in the community. [Plus: the volunteers at CAN are remarkable.] #Ittakesalot #CanCarlton

24.01.2022 We have invited the candidates for the seat of Melbourne to come to our community lunch at the drop-in centre during this campaign. Today we were visited by Adam Bandt, who answered questions, discussed local issues, and got us inspired about our voting responsibilities. Next week we are being visited by the United Australia party candidate. We're looking forward to that conversation too.

22.01.2022 One of our great volunteers cooking community lunch for the masses today. #CanCarlton

20.01.2022 This last Thursday was Harmony Day (or, as known by the rest of the world, ‘International Day for the Eradication of Racial Discrimination’. In honour of the day, and the rather extraordinary mix of cultures that create the Carlton community, there will be a Harmony Day Community lunch next Saturday, held in the beautiful setting on the lawn between the Church of All Nations and Carlton Primary School. We are hoping that all the diverse folk of Carlton can be represented in...cluding the many wonderful folk from the Church of All Nations community! Harmony Day is a brilliant opportunity for us all to think about how we can authentically engage with diverse communities in our area and what better way than sitting down to share a meal. The idea of the lunch is a simple one where people bring a plate of food (that has some cultural or culinary significance to them) to share with the table. There will be a range of activities to keep children and teens entertained including facepainting, giant games and sports activities supervised by the YMCA and other local organisations. Register here (it’s free!) https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/carlton-harmony-day-lunch-t. We’d love to see you.

18.01.2022 We're employing a new Community Development Worker! Come and work with a great team of colleagues and clients https://probonoaustralia.com.au//community-development-wo/

16.01.2022 A large part of our work at CAN is the provision of Emergency Relief to people who live in the high rise flats in Carlton. The current Covid-19 crisis is having an enormous impact on that community, and demand for the food relief we offer is increasing significantly. Many of our clients fall into the high risk categories for Covid-19. They have chronic health conditions; they are elderly. A large number have nobody they can call to bring them food if they get sick. They also ...wonder if anyone will notice if they do get sick and are unable to call for help. We are providing emergency relief through this time, along with delivering food packages to residents in the estate who are unwell. Two of our staff are spending their time making well-being phone calls - checking in with people who are vulnerable, and feel completely alone. We have new clients on our doorstep this week, looking for food when they have never had to seek it out before. We are grateful to be able to help. We know that many people in the community are anxious and stressed about finances at the moment. If you have a stable income, perhaps you would consider donating to CAN, so we can support the community through this extraordinary time. https://www.givenow.com.au/canparishmission

16.01.2022 At CAN, we know that it doesn't take much to keep a community happy on a damp and gloomy day: good food, a warm room, and good company. Thanks to Pat for cooking a sensational roast dinner! #CanCarlton

16.01.2022 CAN Community Support is holding its annual winter appeal. Over the last year we have helped over 700 families in the Carlton area with learning opportunities, emergency relief, parenting skills, wellbeing programs, and community meals. We rely on donations to keep these programs open. If you're able to help, we'd love your support. Donations over $5 are tax deductible. https://www.givenow.com.au/organisation/public/4375

15.01.2022 We are rapt about this initiative, which is beginning tomorrow in Carlton, as part of our emergency relief work. Thanks to Lentil as Anything for proposing the idea, and for cooking sensational meals.

15.01.2022 We took delivery of food today from Foodbank. Sadly, there were no toiletries or breakfast cereals in the boxes. We haven't asked for donations on this page before, but if you're able to help us provide these essential items to a community of people who really need them, we'd be so grateful. Donations can be made through GiveNow, here:

13.01.2022 At CAN, we know it takes a lot of resilience and persistence to bring about systemic change. We are in awe of the tenacity shown by the ‘Befriend A Child in Detention’ group, who use CAN as a base. We love having them here, but really hope - like they do - that one day soon they will have no reason for existing. Yesterday they packed up 20 boxes to send to Nauru for the children who are in detention there. #Ittakesalot #CanCarlton #Bringthemhere

09.01.2022 All roads are leading to CAN this morning. Come on down for the garage sale to end all garage sales - with proceeds going to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, and the Indigenous Hospitality House. 180 Palmerston Street, Carlton

08.01.2022 Melbourne City Council dropped by 5000 masks to give away today, and though we can only tell by their eyes, the Carlton residents are pretty damn happy about it. If you need masks, come on by!

08.01.2022 CAN is hosting a pop-up Op Shop tomorrow and Saturday, in the community centre from 10-4 (you'll need to get in before me for the Marimekko Converse's...)

08.01.2022 It's been a long time since we posted. Photos and reports of the myriad of Christmas events are still due... but in the meantime, here's a picture of some of our Family Learning Program participants at the Australian Open, courtesy of Tennis Victoria. They were really inspired by Venus Williams (aren't we all?), and loved watching Nick Kyrgios.

07.01.2022 On Tuesdays at CAN, the International Women's Group meet to talk about wellbeing, do exercise together, and eat the most amazing food. Yirgalem and Ailsa coordinate a great program, and participants like Zewdinesh make it a really fun community. #CanCarlton

06.01.2022 Here at CAN we see first-hand the difference that support makes to a child's education. The Family Learning Program provides tutoring for children from the local schools, and opportunities for their parents to develop their conversational English. #CanCarlton

05.01.2022 Things at CAN are changing, in response to Covid-19. For information about worship, please visit the CAN website at http://carlton-uca.org/news/home/worship-services/ For information about Community Support, and in particular how to access emergency relief and support, contact the CAN office on 9347 7077. Stay well; be kind.

04.01.2022 This week at CAN we've given fresh fruit and vegetable parcels to over 80 families. Market day is wonderful!

04.01.2022 Due to staff illness, we are urgently looking for a volunteer who either has a station wagon / 4wd, or is willing to drive our manual mini-bus, to help with getting deliveries from Foodbank. It involves a trip between Carlton and Yarraville, and would happen on a semi-regular basis (though even a one-off would be brilliant!). Let me know if you can help...

03.01.2022 Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtime, during Stage 4 restrictions, CAN is hosting a Lentil As Anything popup, with ‘pay as you feel’ lunches available to the community. We’re rapt to see the local community getting hot meals that taste amazing. And it’s obviously in the rules that staff have to taste-test them too! Here’s Anne (one of our Community Development Workers, and our Wednesday Workplace Health Warden!), getting ready to eat today’s gourmet pasta meal, cooked by Navi.

03.01.2022 The much-loved, greatly-anticipated CAN UCA Annual Christmas Pageant is happening this Sunday, 9 December at 10am. Please come dressed as your favourite Christmas story character - an angel, perhaps, or Mary, Joseph, a donkey, a wise traveller, stars, sheep, sheep dogs, shepherds or inn keeper. (Props and costumes will also be provided on the day, if you can’t find something suitable.) ... Come one, come all! Bring friends and family - or just yourself - as we join to tell the story of the birth of Jesus.
