25.01.2022 RANGI ADOPTION 1-year-old de-sexed male Amstaff x Shar Pei Rangi has been in BDR’s tender-loving foster-care for four months while he recuperated and rehabilitated from intense trauma and over-whelming fear of people, particularly men. We recently re-homed very successfully, Rangi’s sister Rumi who is thriving and progressing in leaps & bounds.... Rangi is strong, energetic and needs plenty of exercise. Equally, Rangi makes an excellent couch-potato and loves to snuggle with his female companion/s. He is immensely sweet, gentle and affectionate and adores his playtime with other dogs. Rangi has slowly learnt to tentatively approach gentle, tranquil men at the beach, which may not sound like much, but is huge progress for this poor boy who suffered complete catatonic panic-attacks when in the proximity of men, when he first arrived with us. Rangi is a project. He will need further training and continuing socialisation with other dogs and people. Like Rumi, he hasn’t yet learnt to reign-in his newly found joie de vivre / enthusiasm and can frighten smaller dogs (except for 17-year-old Muffins/Suki and Angeji the Basenji who rule him complètement ). Rangi will need a strong woman to initially bond with in any new situation and will only be good with children who understand how to be gentle and considerate with this sensitive darling. Please contact Shell on 0458461935 for expressions of interest. MC: 982126050238628

24.01.2022 Update from Lunar’s new family Terri writes she is the love of my life and light. My partner and I cherish her with so much love. After nearly two years she has become more confident and lost a lot of the anxiety she first had. best little doggo ever and we found her sister in Coffs Harbour! Thanks for sharing Terri Casa

21.01.2022 BILLIE UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED 6-year-old Bull Mastiff x Billie could melt your heart with one gaze. Simultaneously, and due to her early-life and unknown trauma, she could be inexplicably triggered by someone or something and respond with alarming fear-aggression. She predominantly showed fear of men. Nevertheless, I had a compelling compulsion/intuition to introduce her to James (and partner Kim) who were visiting the Northern Rivers from Sydney.... At her introduction, Billie jumped out of the back of the wagon, ran straight over to James, leant against his legs and looked up at his face with adulation!! Billie’s previous owners’ jaws dropped in disbelief and wonderment. By the end of a long walk on the beach, James was equally enamoured of Billie. A few days later James arrived in his travelling van to pick up Billie for a trial adoption. Without hesitation, Billie jumped into the driver’s seat and unmistakably indicated that she was ready to head off with her favourite new man on a wonderful new adventure. James has since experienced how deeply troubled Billie can be, but decided he would do everything in his power to provide her with a loving and charmed life to this end he purchased the softest, safest muzzle for Billie, so he could relax with her in situations that may trigger her fear-aggression. James and Kim have also dedicated themselves to helping Billie with ongoing training and desensitising strategies. Unending thanks to James & Kim, for giving this very troubled, but adorable girl, a bright future

20.01.2022 RANGI UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED 13-month-old Amstaff x Shar Pei Rangi (now Cruze) arrived into BDR’s care over 5-months ago in a hyper-anxious state. So terrified of men, he would descend into a complete catatonic panic-attack if placed in proximity to a man. His breathing would become erratic, his eyes would flicker and he simply wouldn’t / couldn’t move for hours on end. Too terrified even to stir to urinate, he would have to be coerced outside where he would take over ...2-minutes to empty his bladder. That was Day 1. On Day 2 we placed him with female foster-carer Sarah who he bonded with immediately. Sarah, myself and Angeji the Basenji (with whom Rangi formed a beautiful friendship) soon discovered what an absolute lover-boy he is, immensely affectionate, soft and sensitive. After ineffectively trialling Rangi on various herbal and natural anti-anxiety remedies, on the advice from North Coast Vets, we placed him on an 8-week course of SSRI’s which gave Rangi’s brain the opportunity to learn new behaviours. Sarah was able to begin a regime of walks to the park or beach where Rangi loved playing with other dogs and he very slowly began approaching sensitive, quiet men, offering them an occasional tentative lick on the hand. Sarah dedicated herself to gently socialising Rangi with lots of dogs and people - with outstanding progress. Well done Sarah, you really did turn this gorgeous boy’s life around. Four-months later we felt Rangi ready to meet prospective new companions. Enter Patricia! Patricia had lots of life-experience with large-breed dogs and was searching for a new friend. Rangi’s response to Patricia was more than we could have hoped for he approached her warmly, sat next to her and then gave her a big kiss on the cheek!! After several successful meet-ups and then a 3-week-trial, Patricia and Cruze are now super happy together. Cruze has a trainer and continues to enjoy lots of beach-time, socialising and cuddles. He is spoilt rotten and has found his guaranteed life-companion. Titanic thanks must go to Sarah, Patricia and everyone else involved in Cruze’s new lease on life

18.01.2022 COSMOS ADOPTION Charming "Cosmos" is a 5-month-old desexed male Kelpie x Border Collie x Cattle Dog. He’s been well-loved ever since he and his two surviving siblings and mother were found in an isolated ditch on farmer x’s property. Said farmer removed the mother dog back to the farm, leaving the 2-day-old pups to die. Kindly farm-hands took them in and hand-reared them.... Cosmos was adopted at 10-weeks by a well-meaning young couple who had never owned a dog before. They showered young Cosmos with love and care but finally realised they couldn’t cope with such a fast growing and hyperactive boy. Cosmos has a lovely nature, is affectionate and super smart, but has not been dog-socialised or trained enough. He’s now learning lots, developing manners and expending pent-up energy in fabulous dog-heaven foster-care with the lovely folk from The Grateful Dog. Cosmos needs to find a loving home where he can continue with his socialisation, exercise, training and calming strategies. Please phone Shell from Byron Dog Rescue on 0458461935 for more information. MC: 953010004369549

16.01.2022 BANJO UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED Banjo, now Jojo has not only profoundly changed the life and mood of his new cohort Ruth - he is also hop skip & jump happy himself. Ruth was desperate for a little canine companion to share her home, walks and beach visits with. The pair are now regularly out & about, keeping each other fit and healthy during their sprightly walks and park games.... Ruth is over the moon and unreservedly besotted. Jojo is an absolute delight, so joyous, so well behaved, obedient, patient I adore him. As Mary Oliver once wrote: Because of the dog’s joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?

15.01.2022 RUMI UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED Radiant Rumi the Shar Pei x Amstaff pup, arrived in our care 4 months ago completely traumatised and terrified of humans - particularly men. Thanks to fabulous foster-carers Beatrice & partner (and Ben), Roo was allowed the space to learn to love and trust them. With the additional help of Harry the older wiser Husky, Rumi began to blossom. For the first time in her short life, she started to enjoy; walking and running like a mad thing a...t the beach and allowing new people in her zone without cowering in complete fear. Six weeks ago, Rumi met Susana & Tiago. They were keen to rescue a dog and had the patience, time, talent and tenderness to offer Rumi. This trio exudes love. Tiago said Rumi is the love of our lives and Rumi, although still timid with strangers, is absolutely loving her new life, snuggling with both Susana and Tiago and relishing her off-leash rampages on the beach. Rumi will enjoy supreme spoiling on her 1st birthday on the 30th August. Love to everyone involved in Rumi’s rehabilitation, recovery and renaissance PS. If you see Rumi barrelling towards your little darling-dog on the beach, fear-not, she is just full of joie de vivre and simply wants to say Hi!!!! Ain’t life grand?!!

14.01.2022 SKIP UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED As predicted, little 13-year-old Jack Russell Skip has charmed and wormed (both figuratively & literally ) his way into the hearts of his loving foster-carers, Barbara & Paul. Skip is completely enamoured of Paul, who he never takes his eyes off and has become his little apprentice in the garage and the garden. Barbara has co-ordinated Skips post-operative ear and skin-infection treatments both skilfully and effectively (his mouth has he...aled, his chronic ear-infection has been eradicated and his hair is growing back looking and feeling soft & clean). After $1,400 worth of post-operative treatments and operations (9 rotten teeth removed, chronically infected ears thoroughly flushed and a large tumour removed from his chest) Skip is one happy, pain-free boy. His tail never stops wagging and sometimes rotates at great speed like an aeroplane propeller. When he knows he’s off for a walk, he literally bounces down the path like a baby lamb, skipping his way across the cobbles. (Please check out the gorgeous video Barbara’s daughter and grandson compiled). Skip is currently holidaying in Iluka with Barbara & Paul, enjoying lovely new walks and lots of novel smells. What an absolute pleasure it’s been to help smart, canny little Skip overcome some long-standing maladies and witness his complete transformation and new lease on life. So many thanks to BDR/CAWI for funding this, to vet Lauren & team and of course foster-carers-extraordinaire; Barbara & Paul

11.01.2022 SHERMAN ADOPTION We rescued 4-year-old de-sexed male English Staffy Sherman from the pound last week where he’d found himself in trouble due to his escapism and itinerant behaviours. Sherman was literally bouncing off the walls with pent-up energy, but he has now settled beautifully with his foster-carer and her 2 children. He was simply desperate for attention, exercise and a dependable, loving, fun environment.... Sherman is small but very strong and energetic. He loves the beach and playing in the river. He’s learning some basic commands, is house-trained, great in the car and is excellent with kids and good with other dogs. He is hose and ball obsessive and can get somewhat overbearing and defensive with other dogs who are vying for the same ball. Sherman will need ongoing training, lots of running and plenty of attentive-time with his people. For enquiries about Sherman, please phone Shell on 0458461935. MC: 900164001843502

10.01.2022 DIDDY ADOPTION Diddy (nickname DJ) is an 8-year-10-month-old de-sexed male Kelpie x Retriever x Dingo. Until he was rescued by kind folk Trent and Ilona, Diddy had endured a hard, traumatic life. Mostly chained or caged with his mate Bootsy (already happily re-homed), Diddy would frequently respond to his innate call for freedom and escape his owner. He always faithfully returned home, but unfortunately would receive a beating.... After months in care, Diddy no longer cowers in fear of humans and is "a gentleman and a philosopher until he hits the beach where he turns into a hilarious hooligan who does circle work around and around in joy". He loves kids and puts up with them dressing him in terrible outfits which demonstrates his gentle and tolerant nature. He’s house-trained and gets on well with other dogs. Diddy has become playful, adorable, a darling heart and is the bestest boy! He is still prone to wandering off if not contained, but always returns home. He knows basic commands but is resistant to and scared of recall. He will however, happily follow his carers off the beach and jump straight into the car. Due to some indications of mild arthritis, we have placed Diddy on a high-quality Chondroitin/Glucosamine/Green-Lipped-Mussel supplement. Diddy is one cool, chilled dude who deserves a loving home with people who will adore him. Please phone Shell on 0458461935 for further information. MC: 982000163669389

10.01.2022 MAXIMUS UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED After rescuing Maximus from the Byron Council Pound, where he’d been for 2 full weeks; 4-year-old Bull Arab x ‘Max’ then enjoyed 2-weeks in tender loving foster-care, where he soon recovered from the profound anxiety he had experienced waiting for someone to claim him. We had Max health-checked, updated his vaccinations and treated his ear infection successfully.... It was now time for this gorgeous, well-mannered boy to meet a gentle, loving family who were keen to offer a dog in need a loving home (after losing their cherished 15-year-old Labrador to old age). After three love-filled meet-ups, Max was welcomed into his new home where he relaxed & fitted in quickly we love him so much and honestly it feels like he’s been with us since he was a puppy ‘cos he’s so happy and settled. Happy days Max your future is lit with so much love, light & care

09.01.2022 SASHA UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED Gorgeous natured Ridgeback x Vizsla ‘Sasha’ came into BDR’s care in late March. Although in outstanding health for a 9-year-old, she did have a couple of worrying dark spots on her belly that bothered her at times. We recently had the two lumps surgically removed and discovered that one was a hemangiosarcoma a cancerous dermal/skin lesion caused by the sun. Fortunately, the surgery removed the entire lesion with a good prognosis for Sasha...’s continuing enjoyment and longevity. Sasha has been surrendered twice in her life due to the ‘No Dog’ rental constraints in the Tweed and Byron Shires. When I dropped her round to foster-carer Paul, there was an instant attraction between dog and man, which has only flourished over the last 4 months. Sasha & Paul became inseparable, enjoying their daily walks on the beach, and Sasha soon became known as Princess. Paul’s lease in Ocean Shores recently ended, and he spent 6 weeks looking for alternative accommodation where he could take Sasha with him. He secured an apartment in South East Queensland, but the lease only allowed for a dog under 10kgs. Devastated, we started trying to find Sasha a new home. I suggested to Paul that he look into the new laws relating to pets in rental situations. What he discovered was this the Queensland Commissioner (Body Corporate and Community Management) has recently ruled that the banning of dogs by size or weight by body corporates, is invalid and that tenants have equal rights to owners in regards to keeping their pet. Elated, Paul immediately adopted Sasha and the pair are now enjoying apartment living, together with daily visits to a local off-leash fenced dog park with fun agility equipment. Sasha loves it! This pairs love affair has been a privilege to witness. Paul is also willing to take legal action if necessary, to keep Sasha in his loving care no more surrenders for Princess. Good on you Paul warmest wishes to you & darling girl Sasha

07.01.2022 MACK UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED 2-year-old Bulldog x Red Cattle Dog Mack, has been successfully adopted by Tanya, Scott and 9-year-old Oliver. Mack has bonded nicely with everyone in the family who find him a smart, loving, gentle, sooky, stubborn boy who’s full of mischief.... The family have persevered with a number of Mack’s issues with good, kind reinforcement of boundaries, dog school and plenty of exercise. Tanya jokes; "Are you sure Mack is his name? 50% of the time his name is Mack, the other 50% he’s completely deaf. I think of him as a little PTSD, but he’s getting better all the time and he’s formed a lovely relationship with all of us". I think we can safely say that Mack is a bit of a Maverick, who has landed comfortably and safely into a very loving, patient and dedicated home

06.01.2022 LEROY ADOPTION Meet Leroy or Roy a 15-month-old Kelpie x Cattle Dog originally from the Northern Territory. Leroy is a dancer, an acrobat, a total goofball and has tonnes of personality. Unfortunately, he has suffered trauma in his early life as a camp dog, and now demonstrates behavioural issues, namely a profound fear of men, plus he is easily spooked by unfamiliar noises and situations.... He is an extremely soulful boy who adores to snuggle and can sooth you with his loving. He is fantastic with children, bonds deeply and quickly with women and is generally great with other dogs, wanting desperately to play, jostle and run amuck with them. Leroy has energy to burn and needs to find a situation where he will get lots of exercise, attention, mental stimulation and socialisation with other dogs. He is good with commands and is crate-trained. Roy would settle well with a female (and children). With a special man, he would need plenty of time to learn trust. For more information, please phone Shell on 0458461935. MC: 941000023205533

06.01.2022 BANJO UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED 9-year-old Red Cattle Dog x Staffy Banjo had shared his entire life since puppyhood with one person. When his life companion made the hard decision to move overseas, she couldn’t imagine Banjo, with his particular quirks and habits, adapting to a new home or situation, so purely out of care & concern, she wondered if euthanasia could be the most compassionate solution.... After meeting with the adorable sweet-natured boy, I assured his owner that we could find Banjo a wonderful new home where he could adapt and continue to enjoy his life. Enter Jeff and Robyn, who were missing the company of a dog on their farm in Newrybar. They also found Banjo to be a gorgeous boy who we’d love to trial on our farm. Banjo bonded with Robyn immediately (he was used to a female companion) and very soon after bonded with Jeff too. He loves his long walks on the farm with Jeff, adores sitting with Robyn while she tends the gardens and relishes evening loungeroom-time where he sits with his paw or head, lovingly resting on their laps. All the stakeholders in this story are absolutely delighted with the outcome. Good on you Banjo! Happy life! (Angeji the Basenji - Rescue Assistant Extraordinaire - has to get in on all the action and photo ops )

05.01.2022 RAFI’s STORY (was PUMPER) SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED Rafi is the fourth Border Collie x Kelpie/Dachshund pup we’ve successfully re-homed, from the litter of six who lost their dog-mum to a brown-snake bite 20-months ago. Although one of the larger pups, Rafi has always been the baby of the litter shy, timid, somewhat anti-social, but an absolute lover once he knows and trusts you.... Totally disinterested in, and slinking away from all the lovely folk who met his brothers and sisters (Evelyn, Walter & Betty), Rafi had a complete change of heart when I introduced him to Genna so much so, that he tried to dig his way under the gate to greet her! For all his issues very timid around other dogs / frightened of children Rafi has brought so much love into Genna’s life, and she in turn has the love, devotion and dedication to help Rafi ease slowly but surely into his new life which is very rich and full. He gets to hang out at pet-friendly work - Stone & Wood - where he’s a huge hit, he’s a regular at Heidi’s Hounds day-care, he loves his time with grandma (Genna’s mum), plus he gets to hang out with Angeji the Basenji and I at the beach - all activities designed for soothing and socialising. Well done Rafi you made an excellent choice!

05.01.2022 ELLIE UPDATE - SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED!! Kelpie x Lab Ellie, who turns 10 in a few days’ time, has been in BDR’s care for 8 months. She endured shocking trauma before her rescue, but has been superbly tended and loved by foster-carer Donna (from I Love A Dog) for most of her time with us. Ellie’s health and weight has improved immeasurably with regular exercise and beach walks, together with a raw food and supplement diet (courtesy of I Love A Dog). Her massive anxiety wit...h thunderstorms is being well managed with CBD oil and her unpredictable hostility towards other dogs monitored carefully. Several weeks ago, Ellie was introduced to Anna & Kim, who love offering older or difficult dogs a loving home on their gorgeous hinterland farmlet. Anna & Kim adored Ellie from the outset, and after several small visits to the property, Ellie began to enjoy this new lifestyle; getting to know and respect the other residents including the chickens, the donkey and the family cat. Ellie now adores her new family and home, and has been wholeheartedly adopted somewhat of a miracle from our perspective. We are beyond thrilled that Miss Ellie has found her very own patient and devoted family and send unending thanks to Donna for her perseverance with and unconditional love of Ellie, and to Anna & Kim for seeing and loving the beautiful girl behind her trauma expressions.

05.01.2022 Cuteness overload! This pup saved a stray kitten in the rain and we may just cry. Fur real.

05.01.2022 BANJO ADOPTION Banjo is a 9-year-old de-sexed male Red Cattle Dog x Staffy. He has been with his owner all his life, but won’t be able to accompany her abroad - he is therefore looking for his ensuing and new life-adventure. ... Banjo has always lived on an unfenced rural property, where he self-exercises, but reliably returns home for much loved human company and cuddles. Banjo has also enjoyed beach excursions where he loves (a bit too much) to chase balls and socialises well with other dogs. He can also be obsessive about wildlife, particularly birds, and will bark at them. He also barks for attention and rather charmingly, is a real chatterbox. Banjo loves people and is a very sweet, gentle and affectionate boy. He enjoys being an inside/outside dog and would suit a rural/farm setting where he would love to hang out with and help his new companion/s. For more information, please phone Shell on 0458461935.
