14.01.2022 Third time lucky! I had been to Japan three times but only managed to watch Sumo during my third trip. There are six Grand Sumo tournaments (or honbasho) each year: three in Tokyo (January, May, and September), and one each in Osaka (March), Nagoya (July) and Fukuoka (November). So, you need to plan your trip wisely if you want to watch Sumo. The ticket is not expensive at all (Unless you go to the final match day). For a non-final match, it cost 3,000 yen for the cheapest ...reserved seated ticket. We got better than expected view from this furthest seat from the tournament ring. We reached the stadium early in the morning even before the gate opened. Then, we found out each match day is structured so the highest-ranked Sumos compete at the end of the day. So, we ended up watching more junior Sumos wrestling. As the stadium was quite empty in the morning, I sneaked into the front seat section and got some close up photos. The early bird got the worm!
