23.01.2022 Rodenticides, or rat and mouse poisons, are designed to kill rodents. Unfortunately, young Fido only sees a tasty snack & doesn’t understand the potentially fatal consequences. If you see your pet ingest rat or mouse bait, call your Veterinarian immediately. Within a certain time frame we can administer medication to make your pet vomit up the poison & send them on their way with a potentially lengthy course of Vitamin K tablets (to counteract the anticoagulant effect of ...the bait). The problem becomes when you don’t see your pet eat the bait and generally within the week they are lethargic, have pale mucous membranes, may have trouble breathing and face internal bleeding. The most common rodenticide contains an anticoagulant which stops the blood clotting. Using history, clinical signs and some simple in house diagnostics including a timed blood clotting test, we can establish how to treat your pet. If they are well advanced they may require some intensive hospitalization and even a blood or plasma transfusion! Sadly, there is no guarantee they will survive. Moral of the story? Ensure poison is well out of reach from your pets inquisitive reach. Regularly check poison ‘stations’ to ensure they haven’t been knocked over or opened. And keep a close eye on your best mate * Image courtesy of Google #rodenticidetoxicity #ratbait #mousebait #beware #centralwestnsw #cowra #veterinarian #centralvetservicescowra

22.01.2022 This Angus calf recently presented in good health, however with something a little extra attached to him! He was born with the condition called polymelia (supernumerary limbs), which is not an uncommon birth defect in cattle. The extra limb was attached to the right scapula and while it was causing no direct health issues it was decided that amputation would be completed to prevent any future complications. ... Surgery went very well and the extra limb was removed. The limb was attached to the scapula with a joint similar to that of a hip! The calf was returned to his mother after surgery and is doing well post suture removal! #calf #cattle #anguscattle #spideycalf #extraleg #polymelia #supernumarylimbs #surgery #recovered #backtomum #cowra #centralvetservicescowra #veterinarian

20.01.2022 Minute the stunning Dorking Rooster visited us recently as he wasnt eating or drinking & was lethargic. On examination it was found he was lame and tender on his left foot, with signs of fibrous tissue consistent with Bumblefoot. Bumblefoot, or plantar pododermatitis, is caused by introduction of staphylococcus bacteria and is found on the toes, hocks and pads of a chickens foot. It is characterized by a pus-filled abscess that is covered by a black scab and is paired wi...th lameness, swelling, and the infected birds reluctance to walk. Treatment is ongoing, but Minute is feeling much happier already! 19.01.2022 Sheep caesareans are not something that we see completed often in Australia, yet are indeed an option that sheep producers must consider in certain situations! The only option was to deliver the lambs via caesarean in order to give both ewes and lambs a chance. 07.01.2022 Our Vets hit the ground running this week with Karen heading out first thing Monday, to assist Audra the Clydesdale after she had not passed the placenta post foaling. Retained fetal membranes in a horse is considered something that needs urgent assistance as it can lead to secondary problems, which can be fatal to the mare. 06.01.2022 Often when working in the field we have to make a diagnosis based on a good case history, presenting clinical signs and a response to treatment. For example, Gen recently visited this 6 year old Angus cow that was found in a typical grazing paddock for the Cowra area. On exam, she was showing signs of severe in-coordination, muscle tremors, stargazing and apparent blindness. She was the only cow affected in the mob and the presentation was sporadic. There are a list of... different diagnosis of what could have been causing this! However, the clinical signs were highly indicative of Polioencephalomalacia (PEM), which is a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. This is a condition that more commonly affects young growing cattle and those in feedlot systems. We saw a number of these cases during the drought due to supplementary feeding and also posted about a case that we saw in some calves last year. Based on her findings Gen immediately treated the cow with high doses of thiamine and the cow showed a response within 12 hours! No other cattle were affected in the mob and after a few days of further treatment the cow was back to normal! #cattle #farmvisit #history #clinicalsigns #stargazing #Polioencephalomalacia #PEM #vitaminb1 #thiaminedeficiency #feedlot #supplementaryfeeding #treated #veterinarian #centralvetservicescowra #cowra
