24.01.2022 The Fire Danger Period will begin at 01.00am on Monday, 7 December for the following municipalities in District 4 of CFA’s South West Region: The Fire Danger Period is when CFA restricts the use of fire in the community. This is to help prevent fires from starting. CFA declares the Fire Danger Period for each municipality (shire or council) at different times in the lead up to the fire season. It depends on the amount of rain, grassland curing rate and other local conditions.... The Fire Danger Period may be declared as early as October in some municipalities, and typically remains in place until the fire danger lessens, which could be as late as May. Glenelg Shire Council

23.01.2022 Taking steps to get prepared before the fire season means you know what to do when you’re at risk of fire. Just as every family or household is unique, every fire plan will be different. The information and templates in the Fire Ready Kit and on this website, are designed to assist you. 1. Which Fire Danger Rating is your trigger to leave? 2. Will you leave early that morning or the night before? 3. Where will you go?... 4. What route will you take and what is your alternative in the event that a fire is already in the area? 5. What will you take with you? 6. What do you need to organise for your pets or livestock? 7. Who do you need to keep informed of your movements? 8. Is there anyone outside your household who you need to help or check up on? 9. How will you stay informed about warnings and updates? 10. What will you do if there is a fire in the area and you cannot leave? Remember to decide who will do what as part of your plan.. More Info | www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/your-bushfire-plan

23.01.2022 Fire Fighter Tyson from Warrnambool FRV shows how he puts on his Breathing Apparatus which is what Fire Fighters wear when they attend a fire emergency. This Breathing Apparatus or BA is used to help breath in fresh air to protect fire fighters from nasty smoke and also to protect their eyes and face. The children got to hear the noise the BA made and were reminded not to be afraid if they were ever to see fire fighters wearing these. "Fire Fighters are there to help" he said. A big thank you to Tyson and Mick for working with CFA's Mandy Maglaras to create these videos for the Warrnambool West Primary School Fire Safety Session Yesterday.

22.01.2022 The potential for bumper crops following decent winter rainfall is bringing joy to parts of Victoria, but CFA has warned farmers to take care when harvesting the welcome yields. Much of Victoria, including parts of the Mallee, Wimmera and Far South West, is drier than normal, however above median rainfall is forecast across Victoria during spring, which could result in greater crops and yield but also increased potential fuels if a fire were to start. On average, CFA crews ac...ross the state respond to more than 200 harvesting related fires every year. The predicted follow-up spring rainfall across parts of Victoria has many farmers now looking ahead to a successful harvesting season this year, eager to begin operations. CFA Acting Chief Officer Garry Cook said fires caused by machinery and harvesting operations can be avoided if farmers and harvest contractors take care and follow the correct practices. The key to avoiding harvester fires is diligence. We know farmers will be working extremely hard this season to harvest their crops, but it is vital that they consistently clean and maintain their machinery, as well as inspect it thoroughly before and during use, A/CO Cook said. Hot and dry conditions are a particular concern for CFA; if it’s a high fire risk day, our advice is to postpone any work that was planned to be conducted in the paddock. In hot and dry conditions activities such as harvesting, grinding, welding, slashing or mowing can spark fires very easily and they can become dangerous quite quickly. CFA reminded farmers to ensure machinery such as headers are routinely maintained, moving parts and bearings are regularly inspected and cleaned of any material on hot engine components. It should be part of everyone’s routine to check for straw or grass build-ups in machinery, to maintain its spark arrestors, and to take regular breaks when operating machinery to ensure it doesn’t get too hot, A/CO Cook said. He also advised against driving vehicles and motorbikes through dry grass. There is a risk your car exhaust system can heat up and ignite the dry grass underneath on hot days, A/CO Cook said. Farmers are usually CFA’s strongest advocates for managing fire risk as they know the consequences of fires starting on their properties and the risk to both their crops and machinery, and those of their neighbours. Harvest time can be very dangerous and each season unfortunately we see machinery and vehicles spark fires in different parts of the state. CFA also reminded farmers to have adequate firefighting resources available in paddocks where harvesting operations are conducted. Being fire safe on your farm should be part of any fire plan you have, A/CO Cook said. Read the Full Article: https://bit.ly/2GdLfJ7

22.01.2022 The new Fire Permits Victoria website launched today. Please share. https://firepermits.vic.gov.au

21.01.2022 Its Spring now it’s time to prepare your property for the fire danger period Landowners and tenants should be preparing their properties well before the start of the Fire Danger Period. A lot of things can be done in the garden and around the home to improve the chances of surviving the impact of a bushfire or fast moving grassfire. Now is the time to clean up leaves, twigs, bark and long grass around the home and farm properties as fires cannot be lit in the open air durin...g the Fire Danger Period without a written permit from CFA or a Municipal Fire Prevention Officer. During the pre- Fire Danger Period clean up, if you plan to burn those piles of fallen branches, bark and leaves, call the VicFire Burn-off notification line on 1800 668 511 to avoid an unnecessary fire brigade callout. Once the Fire Danger Period has been declared in your municipality by CFA, lighting a fire in the open without a permit can attract a penalty of $17,000 and 12 months imprisonment. There are even greater restrictions for Total Fire Ban days due to the greater risk of fire. To view or download the Can I or Can’t I brochure, go to the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au or call 1800 226 226 See more

05.01.2022 New equipment will help on the fire ground Mortlake Group of Fire Brigades took ownership of twelve new weather meters last month, courtesy of funding from Mortlake South Wind Farm operated by Acciona. The weather meter technology would be utilised during firefighting operations to provide timely, accurate fire ground weather data, particularly wind speed and direction. With this information on hand, crews would be able to make prompt, strategic decisions regarding the fire f...ight, whilst also ensuring the safety of members. Mortlake Group Officer David Kenna said the equipment would also prove invaluable during the Group’s fire prevention activities too. These weather meters will be highly beneficial for volunteers when undertaking prescribed burns to create strategic fire breaks throughout the Group response area and we’re very grateful for the contribution we received from Acciona to obtain the equipment, said Mr Kenna. Each of the brigades in the Group will receive a weather meter for their operational vehicles to help run fireground operations. 02.01.2022 A new project is underway to reduce bushfire risk for townships along the Great Ocean Road. Forest Fire Management Victoria is constructing 35 kilometres of st...rategic fuel breaks around Lorne, Aireys Inlet and Anglesea. Crews and contractors are using heavy machinery to construct the 40-metre wide breaks, which will create a ring of fuel-reduced land around each town. Once completed, the new fuel breaks will resemble open parkland, following the removal of dense ground vegetation and larger trees being left in place. The project is being delivered in partnership with Surf Coast Shire Council and the CFA (Country Fire Authority). Crews and contractors are adhering to physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure operations are being carried out safely.
