19.01.2022 Flashback Friday: The Prince Charles Hospital. I was surprised at how many buildings have been destroyed on this site.

19.01.2022 Did anyone read this article in the Courier Mail? It's just a proposal - so don't expect anything soon, if ever. It got me thinking, however, about another proposed tunnel under Gympie Rd in Chermside from the past. Does anyone remember this? Bonus points for specifying the decade and the entry-exit points along Gympie Rd.

19.01.2022 Ask CDHS Part 1: Carrie Bertwistle asked about the Bertwistle family in this area. Hope the following helps, Carrie! Carrie's father went to Chermside State School (with two siblings). At this time, they were living at 67 Ethel St, Chermside. This building was built between 1936 and 1946, was demolished in about 1977 and is currently a set of units. Carrie's grandfather, Bernard Hilton Bertwistle, was born 26-7-1918 in Albany St, Windsor. He lived in the street until at leas...t 1941, when he married Alma Rose Churchward. In 1949 they were living in Bruce St, Chermside, with Bernard a plymill hand. By 1950 they had moved to Ethel St, and by 1959 Bernard was a painter. Carrie's grandmother, Alma Rose Churchward was born in 1918, and in 1941 was a tailoress in Milton, living with her parents. Alma's sister, Thelma, was drowned in 1922 attempting to save a friend. Carrie's great-grandfather, Ernest Oswald Bertwistle (1883 - 1968) was a painter. He married Eva Maud Robinson (1885 - 1982) 11-7-1906 and in 1913 and 1914 they were living in Albion St, Albion. They moved, by 1922, to Albany St, Albion, where they lived until at least 1949. By 1959 Ernest and Eva were living at 9 Zenith Ave, Chermside, which was built between 1946 and 1951 - maybe they bought it new? This building was demolished by 2009. Carrie's great-grandparents, James Churchward and Emily Mary Martha Bleck (b. 1891), lived in Coorparoo, Oxley, The Gap and Milton. Carrie's great-great-grandfather, George Watson Birtwistle (c1855 - 2-8-1913) was a signwriter, who lived in The Valley in the 1880s. He married Ellen Adelaide Catton (1854 - 28-11-1913) 18-5-1875. In 1913 he was a contractor, living in Ford St, Albion. Another great-great-grandfather, George Aldred Robinson (1857 - 7-5-1925) was a grocer. He married Susan Starkey (c1860 - 1950). In 1903 and 1906 they were living in Bale St, Albion. In 1913 they were living in First Ave, Albion. By 1922 the family were living in Alcala, Albany St, Windsor. After George died, Susan continued living in Alcala with various children. George and Susan are buried in a concreted but unmarked grave in Lutwyche Cemetery. As you can see, the family moved to the Chermside area relatively lately. It would be a good idea to contact the Windsor & Districts Historical society to see if they have any records. We have records of your family in Brisbane back to your great-great-great-great grandparents. Carrie, if you want a copy of the document, message us your email address.

18.01.2022 The State Library of Victoria gave this image to CDHS past-president Pat O'Shea. Recognise those door handles? The centre was opened by Premier Vince Gair. We also hold an audio recording of the ceremony.

18.01.2022 What do you want to know about the history of our area? Ask your question below, and the CDHS brains trust may even have a corresponding answer. At the very least it will give us something to add to our research to-do list. No question is too silly or obvious.

10.01.2022 This is a recent donation to CDHS. Who knows what it is? Place your answers below, and I'll reveal more about it tomorrow!

08.01.2022 Those of you with a connection to Chermside or Chermside West may find this map useful. It's a Google Map with the 1864 surveyed portions superimposed. I created it in 2014 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Edgar Huxtable's survey of the Chermside area.

07.01.2022 In case you missed it, yesterday I posted a Google Map superimposed with the land portion numbers. I didn't pull this info from thin air, rather from the Historical Cadastral Map Series, published by the Queensland Government. This map is part of the 40-chain series from 1928. It shows the portion number, area, perimeter as well as the holder of the original land grant. You may recognise some of the major roads in the area. This information can be of use when researching a particular piece of land. In conjunction with Trove, this map can be a powerful tool.

01.01.2022 Due to the coronavirus threat, the April general meeting and open day have been cancelled.
