22.01.2022 Preconception care is not just about addressing diet and nutrition to optimise nutrient status, but also considers environmental factors that may be impacting on yours or your future child's development and health. Marketing has a lot of us believing BPA-free products are safe, however this study suggests the chemicals used to replace BPA may actually still be detrimental to health, and specifically your child's brain development. So if you're currently in a preconception care stage, you're already pregnant, or you're wanting to optimise your health (including your hormones), consider finding alternatives such as glass for your plastic containers, water bottles coffee/tea cups etc.

22.01.2022 Sending lots of love to all of the mums today

21.01.2022 As the time draws closer for me to go on leave, just a gentle reminder for any new patients who have been looking to book in that December is your last chance to do so. I’ll be taking a break over Christmas with my last in clinic day being Wednesday 23rd December and after this date won’t be taking new patients until mid next year. This allows for appropriate follow up time before I go on maternity leave There are still a handful of new patient appointments left, email [email protected] or book in using the link in my pinned post source unknown, but if you know please let me know cos it’s cool!

19.01.2022 Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break over the holiday season, and are set for a positive and healthy 2021! 2020 was a huge year, reflecting on your growth over the past year and taking some time to relax and let your nervous system calm is essential. Whether you were able to take some time off over Christmas/New Year or you have scheduled time at the start of this year, prioritise you and set yourself up for an awesome year ahead. The break for u...s focused a lot on family time, connecting, building lego, visiting the pool and taking life at a slower pace, with a side of preparing for a new addition to join us very soon! How were your holidays? What did you do to prioritise yourself and set yourself up for the new year?

18.01.2022 As this little guy prepares to become a big brother, I’m going to use this photo from our recent little getaway to remind exisiting patients that there are about three weeks left for you to book a follow up and finalise your treatment plans and scripts before I go on leave. Use the link in my bio or email [email protected] to book in. Once I’m on leave I can’t guarantee regular checking of emails and ability to renew your scripts. Being proactive now is key to setting yourself up to maintain your health while I’m in a newborn bubble

17.01.2022 Today I spent some time in the kitchen and made a batch of good ol’ blueberry muffins. It’s been a while since I’ve spent time in the kitchen other than making usual meals, and it was nice to rekindle the friendship Food photography and presentation is obviously not a strong skill of mine but with all that’s going on at the moment, I’m grateful for these positives. Time to get back into the kitchen, for spending lots of extra time with the little guy and for enjoying a slower pace to help the adrenals take a break. The positives may be hard to find at a time when job and income loss and sickness is effecting so many. But now more than ever is time to find some positives and keep your focus on them. What are you focusing on to keep your mindset positive at this time?

16.01.2022 The last consult for 2020 is done, and we'll now be taking time off until Tuesday 5 January to rest and rejuvenate Should you need to get in touch, please do so via email - [email protected] and we will respond to you upon our return. I wish each and every one of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and safe New Year

14.01.2022 I’m going to say something that blows my mind and gets my inner health nerd all sorts of excited It might not have the same response for you, and if it doesn’t just let it sink in for a moment because it is pretty powerful, especially if you’re looking to grow your family in the near future. What you do today will affect the health of the egg released during ovulation in three months time. And the health of that egg can effect the health of your child into adulthood. You ...see, an egg takes 100 days to mature before it’s ready to be fertilised should it make it that far. There’s a lot of things that can effect the health of that egg, and many studies have shown the link between the health of both parents at conception and health outcomes of their child into adulthood. This is why preconception care is so important, and where possible, a minimum of three months of preconception care. Optimising nutrient intake and status Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake Addressing any underlying biochemical imbalances Stress management Cleaning up your environment and any toxins that may be impacting your health Connecting with your GP and having routine pathology run These are in no specific order and are all equally important to optimising your health prior to conception. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to see a list of all the things to address, on top of knowing your fertile window to optimise your chance of conception. But I find this really empowering, that you can shift your focus for what really is a short period of your life, to positively impact your child’s health forever. So just start with one thing if need be, focus on what you CAN change. Deciding to grow your family is exciting Allow yourself to feel the joy and excitement, and reach out if you need to seek the help of a practitioner to bring focus to what areas of preconception care are relevant for you

13.01.2022 This quote came up on my feed the other day and it's a great one to provoke thought. Right now, we're in the midst of a pandemic with no known cure, solution or certainty on the path forward and it's leaving a lot of people feeling lost and unsure. There is a lot of focus on not getting sick, and awareness of the underlying conditions that may result in more severe symptoms in one person than another. What if we switched that focus, from avoiding getting sick to being as wel...l as possible? To empowering ourselves to improve our health outcomes, to make the changes necessary to feel as well as humanly possible? Small changes made consistently can contribute to significant positive outcomes. Focus on good nutrition Keep your body moving Ensure adequate, quality sleep at night Stay hydrated Apply the 8:8:8 rule to help maintain balance in your life - 8 hours rest, 8 hours play and 8 hours work daily Check in with a practitioner if required to help you set and achieve desired goals We can bunker down and take all the immune supporting nutrients that are being recommended to help with the current situation, but turning it around and thinking proactively and long term brings about much more benefit. Who knows, in the meantime you may just inspire someone else to do the same and before long we've got a bunch of people turning their health around, addressing chronic disease and improving our global health outcomes

11.01.2022 A 2019 study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry found that women who took the birth control pill as a teenager were up to 3 times more likely to be clinically depressed in adulthood than those who began taking birth control pills as adults or those who had never taken it. It’s so important for parents of teenage girls, and teenagers themselves, to be aware of these outcomes. The pill shuts down ovulation, stopping the natural production of progestero...ne, and therefore stopping the establishment of a menstrual cycle. Hormones have a huge influence on the brain, and our teenage years are an important period for brain development. The birth control pill has only been around for 60 years and so there hasn’t been a lot of information available on long term outcomes of use. It’s often presented as a solution for painful, irregular and heavy periods for teenagers, and sometimes peer pressure can come into play when a teen decides she wants to go on it. However, the more we learn, the more of an informed choice we can make as to whether it is truly the right thing to start taking. Here are some fun facts about teenagers and their periods: It can take up to 3 years for a regular cycle to be established A cycle between 21-45 days is considered normal for a teenager Some pain and cramping can be considered normal for you - however, it should be relieved by over the counter pain killers and it shouldn’t interrupt daily activities) What is normal for you may not be normal for your friend You may experience some skin outbreaks as your body responds to hormone production. For example, testosterone is associated with oil production in the skin, and waivers during the cycle, which is why you may experience cyclical outbreaks. When to seek help? Your cycle is irregular, unpredictable, shorter than 21 days or longer than 45 You’re changing your pad or tampon more frequently than every 1-2 hours You aren’t experiencing pain relief from over the counter medications You’re experiencing mood changes, acne, headaches that seem to be cyclical Your bleed goes for longer than 7 days I’m not here to say that there is a right or wrong choice over what decision is made to address any period problems for you/your daughter. However, what is important is to make an informed choice. Symptoms are the body’s way of telling us that something isn’t quite right, and there are many factors that influence hormone production and health so looking outside the square for imbalances may be a solution for those wishing to avoid taking the contraceptive pill. 10.01.2022 Supplements, using nutrients in therapeutic dosages to restore biochemical balance and function, can be a very powerful tool in healing. However, a recent chat with a patient was an important reminder of how supplements, regardless of how they're marketed, might actually not be good for us. This patient happened to be on thyroid medication and taking a supplement marketed for energy which contained many ingredients that interfered with the absorption of that particular medic...ation. As such, the supplement that was supposed to be helping with her energy was actually doing the complete opposite. Always consult a qualified practitioner before self-prescribing supplements. Over the counter supplements as well as those sold by MLM companies might have low dose nutrients in them but it doesn't stop them from being potentially dangerous, especially when the person selling them might not have your full health history or an understanding of how nutrients work in the body.

07.01.2022 Nutrition advice can be confusing, especially when you're not given much guidance. A patient was recently telling me about being given advice for a gluten and dairy free diet, without much guidance on how to implement it. After all, Woolies sell a delicious gluten and dairy free Oreo alternative that ultimately fits the brief. Some patients don't need the guidance and are quite happy with the underlying principle of 'eat as much from the Earth as possible' to guide them, others need a little more help on how to transition into a new dietary pattern that supports their body's healing. This is why I often spend time workshopping dietary implementation with patients. What works for you, your lifestyle and your taste preferences likely won't work for someone else.

05.01.2022 Oh hey there! I’ve been pretty quiet on socials the last few months, but behind the scenes things have been anything but quiet! I’m still here, seeing patients (via Zoom for the short term) and creating some awesome plans - I’ll be sending out a newsletter to patients with more details this week and then getting more of the word out on Facebook and Instagram over the next few weeks. 04.01.2022 The word is out to patients subscribed to my newsletter so I thought I best share it here too. I’ve been quiet these last few months due to many exciting changes going on, one of which is I’m pregnant! I’m returning to in clinic consults very soon (as well as online ones should they work... better for you) - I will share more details on this in the coming days. For now, I am excited to say I’ll be back at Grow Therapies next Saturday (24 October) Saturday’s are going to be one off and very occasional for the foreseeable future so if Saturday’s work for you, please get in touch ASAP to book in. 03.01.2022 It’s PANDA Week - a week designed to raise awareness of perinatal depression and anxiety, something very close to my heart. In this photo I was in the thick of postnatal depression/anxiety but my camera reel didn’t show it. I still advocate that the most potent and beneficial thing I did during this time was speak to those closest to me and tell them what was going on. This year’s theme for PANDA Week is Tell someone who cares - at the time it is hard because having a baby... is supposed to be the happiest time of your life and yet you feel like shit, but speaking to someone - your partner, a friend, a family member, a health professional, can literally be a turning point. A safe place to let go, a release of emotion, an opportunity to create a plan for brighter days. And it happens, the brighter days DO come - the treatment that we get and how we reach that point will look different for each parent. It just starts with one conversation to a trusted person. So if you’re a new parent experiencing depression and anxiety symptoms, please reach out to someone in your circle. You are loved, you are strong and you will get through this
