11.01.2022 Martial Arts as a Potential Intervention for Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) A child is exhibiting ADHD behavior when they d...isplay inappropriate degrees of inattention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity. (APA, 1994) Though most children display this behavior to one degree or another depending on age, some require special treatment to be able to function in their daily life. Both pharmacological and behavioral interventions are used, each having some success and failure. We have examined the treatments currently being used and designed the STARteam martial arts program, cross-referencing the program to the current treatments, as an alternate treatment. To diagnose ADHD, the child must display a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity that is more frequent and severe than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development. Some of these symptoms must be present before age 7, and some impairment from these symptoms must occur in at least 2 settings (e.g. school and home). In addition, there must be clear evidence of interference with developmentally appropriate academic, social or occupational functioning. The problem must not occur exclusively during the course of a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Schizophrenia, or other Psychotic Disorder and are not better accounted for by another mental disorder (APA, 1994). Associated features of the disorder vary as a function of age. These include low self-esteem, mood changes, low frustration tolerance and temper outbursts. These students tend to do poorly in school. The course of the disorder varies considerably. Sometimes ADHD as a child can manifest problems later in adulthood or they may be outgrown (APA, 1994). While STARteam program is interested in behavioral techniques to work with ADHD kids, we need to be aware of the medical interventions being used because they affect the behavioral interventions. The prescription of psycho-stimulant medications is the most frequent treatment for ADHD. The three most commonly employed are Ritalin, Dexedrine, and Cylert with Ritalin (methylphenidate). About 70 to 80% of the children treated with psycho-stimulants respond positively, while the remainder require alternative medications such as antidepressants (DuPaul, Barkley & McMurray, 1991). When we have a student who is on medication we must be prepared to adapt to their level of functioning due to the ADHD, the drugs helpful effects and the challenges presented due to unwanted side effects. Behavioral interventions are very important even if a student has responded positively to medication. Behavioral methods help us work with kids who may otherwise be able to absorb little information. Methods include Adjusting the environment the student perceives or characteristics of the task (e.g., do activities along with other fun games, instead of repetitive, boring tasks). Contingent teacher attention. Frequent verbal feedback (both positive and negative), and non-verbal feedback such as frowns, smiles and pats of approval are frequently used. Classroom token economies where tokens or points are awarded to be exchanged later for prizes, activities, or privileges, have been well documented as being excellent ways to motivate youngsters (ADHD and non-ADHD alike). Parents involvement Time-out period where a student is removed from the group activity for a period of time. These environmental modifications and reinforcements have been shown to be effective (Abramowitz and OLeary, 1991). Cognitive behavioral interventions teach students how to be their own managers of behavior. o Self-monitoring and self-reinforcement o Self-instruction and problem solving The features of the STARteam Martial Arts program are based on the concept that each student is different and has different needs. Different methods are used to teach students many things that will apply after the lesson is over. In addition these strategies work with kids without ADHD - allowing the teacher to be fair and consistent in the classroom The building blocks for this are based on our REPARIO framework. Fundamental to the design of our curriculum is the integration of social emotional intelligence and 12 themes that are integrated into classes such as self control, self awareness, self improvement, self esteem, courtesy, integrity, friendship, confidence, perseverance, respect, dedication and goal setting. The STARteam martial arts program for kids provide behavioral interventions similar to the ones above, generally accepted as helpful to ADHD kids, and, in addition, become itself an intervention that can help these children perform better in their everyday lives.
