21.01.2022 STAFF PICK SUNDAY 488 Rules for Life by Kitty Flanagan. When stand-up comedian and TV personality Kitty Flanagan came across Jordan Petersons book 12 Rules for Life, she wondered how on earth twelve rules could possibly be enough to cover all the situations we find ourselves in on a daily basis. This book is her response. Starting out as a segment on ABC TVs The Weekly, 488 Rules for Life is a compilation of Kittys humorous suggestions for how we can make the world a better place. With guidelines for how to behave from home to work, shopping, dating and on social media, this book is well-observed, relatable and perfect when you are in the mood for a light and amusing read.
20.01.2022 STAFF PICK SUNDAY The Butchers (also published as The Butchers' Blessing) by Ruth Gilligan is a novel which interweaves stories from a cast of different characters set in rural borderlands Ireland, 1996. A photograph is hung on a gallery wall for the very first time since it was taken two decades before. It shows a slaughter house in rural Ireland, a painting of the Virgin Mary on the wall, a meat hook suspended from the ceiling - and, from its sharp point, the lifeless bo...dy of a man hanging by his feet. The story of who he is and how he got there casts back into Irish folklore, of widows cursing the land and of the men who slaughter its cattle by hand. But modern Ireland is distrustful of ancient traditions, and as the BSE crisis in England presents get-rich opportunities in Ireland, few care about The Butchers, the eight men who roam the country, slaughtering the cows of those who still have faith in the old ways. Few care, that is, except for Fionn, the husband of a dying woman who still believes; their son Davey, who has fallen in love with the youngest of the Butchers; Gra, the lonely wife of one of the eight; and her 12-year-old daughter, Una, a girl who will grow up to carry a knife like her father, and who will be the one finally to avenge the man in the photograph. You can borrow this title from our collection in print format or as an eAudiobook using the Bolinda audio BorrowBox app.

18.01.2022 DARK EMU In Dark Emu Bruce Pascoe puts forward an argument for a reconsideration of the hunter-gatherer tag for precolonial Aboriginal Australians. How well do we know the history of the original inhabitants of the continent on which we live? The evidence insists that Aboriginal people right across the continent were using domesticated plants, sowing, harvesting, irrigating and storing-behaviours inconsistent with the hunter-gatherer tag that Aboriginal Australians have been labelled with. One of our most highly reserved books over the past couple of years, we have this important title available in our collection in both regular and large print editions, audio book and eBook formats, as well as the junior edition - Young Dark Emu.

07.01.2022 FIVE FINGER BOOK STACK CHALLENGE There's a Five Finger Book Stack Challenge going around social media, so Adult Services Librarian Sally couldn't resist joining in! Here's what she has to say about her five picks: -Thumb: A Book You Love ... I love Simon Van Booy, he is one of my favourite authors, and I adored Father's Day by him. His writing style is fairly subtle and poetic but full of really beautiful observations of the human experience and what unites us rather than what sets us apart. -Index Finger : A Book You Would Recommend. I read Egg Shell Skull a few years ago and it floored me. It is a very well researched first hand account of Bri Lee's experience working in the Australian legal system, particularly in relation to sexual assault cases. I couldn't put it down, it's so compelling I end up recommending this to a lot of library users that come through our doors. -Middle Finger : A Book You Didn't Enjoy. I took home Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff by Sean Penn and got about 50 pages in before I had to abandon ship. It was honestly like he was looking at a thesaurus as he was writing it and using as many adjectives as possible to try to look literary! No offense if you enjoyed it... just not my cup of tea! -Ring Finger : A Character You Would Marry. I couldn't think of a fictional character so I went to my usual ultimate crush- Nick Cave! This graphic novel all about the musical and personal experiences of Nick Cave is fantastic. A must-read for any fan. -Pinky Finger : A Book You Will Get Around To Reading. I have yet to read Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. I know, I know! I'm behind the eight ball on this one! I'm letting all the reservations in our library community go out before I take it home. I've heard many amazing things so I will definitely get to it one day. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint! What would your five picks be? Share below!
