20.01.2022 CALLING ALL HIGHGATE, NORTH PERTH, Mt LAWLEY, Mt HAWTHORN PARK LOVERS My final undergraduate project in urban and regional planning focuses on the research ...on biodiversity in inner-city parks. I am specifically focusing on parks in the City of Vincent area, as these parks are widely used and are popular with a wide range of people. All of these parks contain rich ecosystems, with some containing unique West Aussie animal and plant species, which we all love. I have created a survey which aims to explore peoples perception of these parks, and their own understanding of what biodiversity means to them. Link in the comments below! This research is for an Urban and Regional Planning project, under Curtin Universitys School of Design and Built Environment. Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) has approved this study (HRE2020-0439)

19.01.2022 Dear Members, Our 2020 AGM will be postponed. The reason, you will not be amazed to learn, is Covid-19. We will reconsider the situation at the end of April but it seems likely we will not be able to meet for quite a while. Fortunately all the current committee members are willing to remain for another year and we have a new volunteer to add to the numbers (thanks Marion), so the group will continue to function though in a rather restricted way. The working bee scheduled for... the 4th April is also cancelled, although if anyone happens to be walking past Robertson Park and spots some weeds please feel free to do them no good. Best wishes, and hope you are all well and stay that way, Jenny

16.01.2022 Our working bee next Saturday 7th September will be at the garden around Lincoln Tower on the corner of Lincoln and Smith Streets, Highgate. The garden is looking lovely but needs some weeding and mulching. Mulch will be fetched from the free pile in Leederville so if anyone can assist by bringing a car, that would be appreciated. The mulch will be carried in large bags so it wont make a mess of your car. If you are able to bring a car, please let us know in advance. Weeding.... It is recommended to wear gloves. We dont have many spare so please bring your own. A weeding tool is useful, but not necessary. We have a couple to spare. Well get going at 9am (Saturday 7th September). Volunteers will be able to visit the very interesting Police Museum afterwards
15.01.2022 River Guardians may recall that there was a bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate microalgae, Alexandrium, that occurred earlier this year from February to May in t...he Swan Estuary between Pelican Point and Herne Hill. Routine water sampling in the Swan Estuary has again detected Alexandrium and the bloom currently extends from Pelican Point, Nedlands to Como Jetty and upstream to Tonkin Highway, Redcliffe Bridge. Based on these results Dept. of Health has advised the public to not consume fish, crabs or shellfish from the affected area between Pelican Point, Nedlands to Como Jetty and upstream to Tonkin Highway, Redcliffe Bridge. Warning signage has been erected by local riverfront councils. Visit the Department of Health's website to read the full media statement and Frequently Asked Questions. https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au//Shellfish-crabbing-and-fishi

10.01.2022 The Native Seed Collection season is here and APACE will be running a Native Seed Collection Workshop on Thursday 28th November from 8.00am to 4.00pm. There's a... fair bit more to native seed collecting than you might think and a little bit of preparation combined with essential knowledge goes a long way in this area. The APACE native seed collection workshop covers licensing and regulations through to essential botany for the collector and discusses maturity, provenance, equipment, procedures and lots more. OSH for the seed collector is very important too and we look at some of the specific hazards involved with this subject. Seed extraction, processing, cleaning and storage are dealt with during the afternoon sessions, before we wrap up with a walk around the local area looking at various native fruits and seeds. Contact APACE now to book your spot on what will be a highly informative and engaging workshop. Cost is $199.00 / person (ex GST) Tel. 08 9336 1262 e. [email protected] Tickets can be purchased using the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/native-seed-collection-worksho

02.01.2022 Have you read 'Miniature Lives' by Michelle Gleeson, published by CSIRO (2016), which tells you all about the insects you are likely to come across in your gard...en? Clear, easy to read text and great pictures that even young (4-5yr old) children can relate to, this book is a great resource for teachers, nature lovers, grandparents and gardeners. Did you know that local plants to your area support a much greater range, diversity and number of insects than plants from other places? Observing and appreciating insects is one of the best things you can do to help our local ecology. With insect and bee numbers apparently reducing (there was an interesting episode of Foreign Correspondent last week - 'Insectageddon' from the 15th October?) - we all need to help make it easier for insects to thrive. Insects are a vital part of our ecosystem - many plants depend on them for pollination or dispersal of seeds, they break down leaf litter and improve soil - they are also an essential part of the food chain (food for lizards, frogs and many birds eat insects). Insects are critical for our crops and food production and by looking after them, you'll naturally keep the number of 'pest insects' in your garden in lower numbers (Growing locals, Robert Powell and Jane Emberson, 1996). We purchased our copy online from CSIRO publishing https://www.publish.csiro.au/book/7264/. Enjoy reading and feel free to visit us at APACE nursery located in North Fremantle (https://apacewa.org.au/nursery/).
