Are you interested in attending an online focus group to be held on Thursday 3 September from 10am-12.15pm? CRU is hosting a Queensland focus group on behalf of The Social Deck who are running public consultations as part of the review into the Disability Standards for Education. This is an important opportunity to provide feedback on how students wit...h disability can participate in education on the same basis as other students. 20.01.2022 CRU is hosting an introductory evening session for families who want to learn more about inclusive education what it looks like and the policies and other supports that help make inclusion possible. Families will learn about how to develop and draw upon a positive vision to set goals for their child’s school years and to advocate positively and effectively with their child’s school. This session is being held on Tuesday 27th October at the CRU office, South Brisbane, from... 6.15-8.30pm. 18.01.2022 CRU is offering an online workshop for families of school aged children to explore the ideas, examples and strategies in our new resource Building Belonging in the School Community. Join us on Tuesday 1st of September from 10am-11.15am via Zoom to discuss how valued roles assist students with disability to develop friendships and participate more fully in the life of the school. There will be group discussion and exercises to identify potential school roles, learn how to seize opportunities, and strengthen current participation and relationships. 17.01.2022 It isn’t uncommon for the behaviour of students with disability to become a focus of troubling discussions between home and school. Certainly families can feel concerns about the potential threat of exclusion or rejection or query the school’s management of behaviour. This online workshop is designed to give families of school aged children some frameworks for understanding the behaviours that commonly attract school attention, and will provide positive ideas for supporting the student, so the family can advocate for positive and proactive responses.

16.01.2022 I Choose Inclusion produced by Queensland Parents for People with a Disability (QPPD) in 2011 has been a valuable handbook for Queensland advocates for inclusive education for close to a decade, but it was out of print and out of date. CRU has recently produced an updated version of I Choose Inclusion which includes information and links to the DoE Inclusive Education policy, NCCD, UNCRPD General Comment no 4, the Queensland Human Rights Act, and more. It still includes ...valuable information for families on dealing with barriers to inclusive education, advocacy and meeting strategies, and the fundamentals of school inclusion. 15.01.2022 CRU is pleased to support next week’s webinar that discusses Australia’s next National Disability Strategy. It is being run by the Australian Human Rights Commission and the Centre of Research Excellence in Disability and Health. The National Disability Strategy is a critical policy for Australia’s future. The new Strategy provides an opportunity for all levels of government in Australia to create meaningful opportunities for people with disability, recognise and respect human rights and ensure all Australians’ needs are considered now and if the future. But people with disability and their families need to provide constructive comment and innovative ideas to ensure this occurs. Register on the link below.

CRU is delighted to be hosting our popular Inclusive Education workshop Working Effectively with your Child’s School in the following locations: Working Effectively with Your Child's School - TOOWOOMBA - Thursday 29th October, Working Effectively with Your Child's School - ROCKHAMPTON - Friday 6th November... Working Effectively with Your Child's School - GOLD COAST - Monday 9th November. These workshops help families to plan more effective conversations with their schools, armed with knowledge about best practice in inclusive education, current policies, advocacy tips and communication skills. Families will be encouraged to dream big and aim high in order to positively influence their children’s school experience. 10.01.2022 What you can do as a family to get started? Do you know how to help your high schooler begin their journey to meaningful employment? their first work experience or first paid job? Are you wondering about life after high school and about how to start building a career for your son or daughter? ... In the second half of 2020, CRU are starting work together on a new three-year project to support young people with disability and their families to engage with employment. This program aims to inspire, increase the confidence of and motivate students with a disability and their families to make a start on the road to employment. 04.01.2022 Inclusive Education is a right for all children and backed by more than 50 years of evidence, but sadly many young children with disability are still directed away from the regular school. Even when students are in the regular school, there can be subtle and not so subtle messages that can erode a family’s positive vision and expectations of school inclusion. CRU’s new publication, Dreaming Big, Standing Strong: Queensland Stories of Inclusive Education, features 26 moving... and illuminating Queensland stories of inclusive education to encourage and inspire families and others that inclusion is not just possible but benefits everyone. These stories also contribute clarity on likely barriers and what families need to know to stay on an inclusive path and build a rich included life. 04.01.2022 Inclusive Education is a human right, but securing that right often requires advocacy. Having a working knowledge of key policies and laws provides a useful foundation for that advocacy even if you never intend to resort to legal action. Queensland’s new Human Rights Act may provide some further protections from discrimination for students with disability, and from other issues which could arise in the future.
