24.01.2022 Conquer Fitness Brisbane Blog #1 Topic New Year’s Resolutions Before I begin, there are two people that I’d like to thank.... The first is you. The reader! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read my piece. Without an audience, there wouldn’t a blog to write. The second is my beautiful wife. Thank you for always believing in my ideas, regardless of how warped they may seem sometimes. Now. New Year’s Resolutions. A lot of people have different views on them and my opinion is going to be different to some other people, which is completely fine. They can be whatever an Individual wants them to be, you don’t even have to have one if you don’t want to. The reality is though, that they are very common amongst society and more often then not, related to an Individual’s health and fitness. Which is great! Any person that wants to make a positive change in their life is doing a great thing in my opinion. It’s a great time for people to make a fresh start in life that otherwise wouldn’t be able to wake up one morning and turn their life around over night. There’s not too many people in the world with that kind of will power. I know from personal experiences. I had a pretty serious car accident where I was at fault, my girlfriend moved overseas, my father was diagnosed with a terminal disease and I lost the first person that was extremely close to me, being my grandmother. All in the one year! I was lucky enough though that the following year, life started to turn around for me. Unfortunately though, statistics show that less then 10% of people that make New Year’s Resolutions are successful in achieving them. Here are a couple of tips to help you stay on track if you are part of the other 90%. The first is tell people close to you about it. Talk and think about it all the time and ask them to hold you to it if and when you feel like your falling off track. Once it becomes second nature to you, you’ll wonder how you lived without it. Secondly, Refuse to give up on yourself. Take it seriously. Remember why you chose whatever it was that you did and push through the tough times because at the end of the day, the first person that you’re letting down is yourself if you quit. As a famous quote by Mae West goes You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. I hope this has helped you and thanks again for reading! Last thing to remember MAKE 2016 YOUR BEST YEAR YET!!!

15.01.2022 Conquer Fitness Brisbane Blog #4 Topic How to keep motivated Motivation is one aspect that is crucial to you achieving your goals. Not only in fitness and health, but life in general. ... For me, there is one key area that needs to be maintained in order to be successful with goals and aspirations. This is your WHY. The reasons behind why you want to ‘lose that 15kg’ or ‘run that half marathon that you haven’t been able to succeed at yet’. What are the driving forces behind your goal? Everyone’s WHY is different and a lot of the time, can be quite personal. The trick to this though is regular goal setting. So you’ve got your main goal, which is generally referred to as your ‘Long-term goal’. Now what you need to do is set small and trackable targets (or small goals). These can be weekly, fortnightly or even monthly if need be. Some ways of staying on track are 1. Making sure to always reward yourself once you’ve hit a small target, but with in reason of course. It’s important to be honest with yourself as well and if you know that you’re not the type of person that can give something up cold turkey, take baby steps and if that means having a cheat meal once a week for the first month or so, then so be it. You’re going to benefit much more in the long run by doing this. 2. Making sure that you’re not too hard on yourself, and also never doubt yourself. This is very important. I feel we as humans, can be extremely hard on ourselves. I for one can definitely be my worst critic at times and a lot of the time, it works in our favour. But this is definitely one situation where it can work against you. One quote that I always keep in mind for both myself and clients in these situations is the quote from A.A Milne Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. 3. Watching and listening to motivational videos and stories. This would have to be my favourite. These days, videos are so accessible on the internet and with almost everyone having a smart phone, there’s no reason why people cant watch and/or listen to videos and podcasts throughout the day. One of my favourite motivational speakers is Eric Thomas. His videos and speeches are definitely worth watching if your lacking some motivation and/or inspriration. Well there you guys, thanks for reading and I hope this makes a difference to you next time you notice your motivation drop. GOOD LUCK AND TRAIN HARD!.

14.01.2022 Conquer Fitness Brisbane Blog #2 Topic Where to start with an exercise program/regime This topic comes from an avid follower of mine and I’m more than happy to take suggestions on topics for future blogs so please let me know if there’s anything you’re interested in finding out about.... Where to start with an exercise program/regime is an interesting topic to write about because the Fitness Industry is so broad and incorporates a lot of variety, which is a great thing for people that may be new to it or haven’t exercised in some time. The number one thing for me is finding something that you enjoy and you’ll make a long-term commitment to. For example, there’s no point someone that can’t stand boxing joining a boxing gym. It’s just not going to work for them. Many people though may not know what they like or where to start so for those people, I’d suggest shopping around and finding what’s best for you. The great thing is that the vast majority of Fitness Centre’s offer a 3 to 7 day trial period, and there’s no shame in not going back to one if you feel its not going to be your thing. For those people that are completely new to a gym and haven’t done a weights/cardio program before I’d strongly urge that you hire a Personal Trainer. Even if it’s just for 2-3 months, you’re much better off than going with the self-help option that can be a regular occurance in gyms. Time and finance though are two common obstacles that people face. Ways of combatting these issues are 1 Do your research before making a commitment. For example, for people in metropolitan areas, there are boot camps/group training facilities running morning, lunch and night. Work out what time is best for you to train and then look around for local facilities that cater to your needs. Or if you’ve found a Personal Trainer that you feel can make a difference to your life, don’t be afraid to say, Sorry, but I can only train at 5am. Good trainers will make the time for good clients. It comes with the job. 2 If you’ve found something that you enjoy and feel will have a positive influence on your life but can’t quite afford it, make sacrifices. Give up that six-pack of beer on the weekend, bottle of wine or night out on the town once a fortnight. You’ll be making an extra positive impact on your life, and once you’ve adapted to the training, you’ll wonder how you went so long without it. In conclusion, as long as you’re eating a well balanced diet, along with living a healthy and active lifestyle, you’re on the right track. Please remember though that these huge success stories that you see on TV don’t happen overnight. It takes a lot of dedication and sacrifice but once you begin to reap the rewards of your hard work, you won’t look back. I hope this has helped and thank you for reading. GOOD LUCK AND TRAIN HARD!

13.01.2022 Conquer Fitness Brisbane Blog #5 Topic Be Persistent and Never Give Up Google defines persistence as The fact of continuing in an opinion or course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition.... In regards to health and fitness and life in general, persistence to me is pushing through all the tough times and difficulties you face and keeping that self-belief going, regardless of the obstacles you’re facing. In life, I feel you must always Be Persistent! Things aren’t going to go your way 100% of the time, maybe not even 70% of the time. But if you quit and give up, its you that suffers first and foremost. Life is full of challenges everyday, but you always have two choices. Do I quit? Or do I push through? Choose the second option my friends. I’d like to share a quick story about my personal experiences with not giving up. I’m not big on going into too much detail about myself but if my experiences can help someone else then I’m all for it. I lost my father to Motor Neurones Disease at the start of 2013. It was 10 months and 2 days from the day of his diagnosis to the day he died. I had recently turned 25. He was my best mate. I loved our chats about whatever sport was on over a couple of cold beers. As he gradually got worse, that time together talking about the football began to fade. The few weeks after his death I was a mess, angry at the world for anything and everything, pushing away the people that were there for me the most. Then one night, I received a rude shock. Seeing my most beloved family member break down in tears because of my actions. I was at a crossroads that night. Do I continue to spiral out of control or do I get my act together? Luckily, I took the second option. I joined a boxing gym and let all the anger out, instead of keeping it inside suffocating me. Because of the love and support from my small but close circle of family and friends, I didn’t give up. And neither should you if you’re going through something similar. As long as your breathing, there’s always hope. Believe that. I’ll finish with a quote that I love by Jim Watkins A river runs through a rock, not because of its power but because of its persistence. You are confined only by the walls you build yourself Be that river my friends and TRAIN HARD!

12.01.2022 Conquer Fitness Brisbane Blog #3 Topic When is the best time of day to train? This is an interesting topic I feel and it is a commonly asked question by people that are new to the gym environment and/or exercising because there are many different factors that come into play but really what it all comes down to is the individual’s needs, their schedule and most importantly, what time of day they feel most comfortable training.... There are pro’s and con’s for every period of the day. But for the vast majority of people, the two main periods are naturally, before and/or after work. The trick is to find whatever period works for you best, and then stick with it. I’m going to run through some tips for people that train at each of the main two periods of the day being morning and afternoon/evening. The morning people tend to like to start their day with a workout, getting it out of the way early on and feeling that they’re most energetic after a good night’s sleep. For these people, please also keep in mind that training on an empty stomach is not ideal. This though, can be tough for the early risers. A few examples of beneficial foods to have before your early morning workouts are 1 x banana, oats or berries and Greek yogurt. The optimal time to train after a main meal, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner is generally about 2-3 hours, but again this will vary from person to person, and of course, depends on the type of session you’re doing, whether it be a weights based session or cardio based. The afternoon and evening people are again at the opposite end of the scale but one thing that can become a common trend, which is similar to the morning people, is still training on an empty stomach. When you think about it, say for example, you have lunch at 1pm and then don’t get to the gym to begin your workout until 6pm-6.30pm that’s five to five and a half hours without a main meal. A couple of ways to combat this is to either prepare substantial snacks that you can take to work or preparing a second lunch. This can be exactly the same as your first lunch or the portion size can be slightly smaller. It all comes down to how much you can eat. For the people that are on a weight loss journey, one thing you can do is halving your lunch portion size and having them in 2 sittings, being 2 or 3 hours apart. That way you’ve still got something in your system when it comes time to train and you’ve met your daily calorie intake. It’s a win win situation. In concluding, there’s no evidence to prove that it’s most beneficial to train at a certain time, as opposed to another. It all comes down to the individual. The key to success in this instance is though, finding out what time of day works for you and then sticking with it so exercise becomes a part of your daily routine. Thank you for reading and TRAIN HARD!

07.01.2022 Conquer Fitness Brisbane blog #6 If you met your 18 year old self, what words of wisdom would you give? Over the last two weeks I’ve found myself reflecting a lot on the last year due to my wife and I’s 1st wedding anniversary fast approaching, which is also my 28th birthday.... To me, this is also a significant birthday because it marks 10 years of adulthood as well. So more recently I’ve been thinking back to the person I was at 18 and I chose to ask myself If you met your 18 year old self, what words of wisdom would you give? I came up with this Life isn’t going to be the comfortable road that you thought it would be but its okay, everything will work out the way it should. It wasn’t until I began to lose things in life that I began to grow up, become a man and understand what’s really important. I’m a big believer in our mistakes and defeats in life are our greatest lessons and unfortunately sometimes in life you have to make your own mistakes, regardless of the people around you that care for you telling you to do something else. I made a lot of those mistakes up until about the ages of 23 and 24, but am all the more stronger for it and pretty proud with where my life is at today. I wonder what words of wisdom my 38 year old self will have in 10 years? Only time will tell!

07.01.2022 This is a blog post I wrote a couple of years ago but still feel it has relevance to alot of people over the next few days in particular being the start of a brand new year and people thinking of their New Year’s Resolutions. Hope you enjoy!
