24.01.2022 Time for another update. This project has been planned with the home-owner for a little while so it is great to see that earthworks have begun. And what a beginning! This excavation and brickwork are the commencement of an underground cellar which will eventually be underneath a lovely two-storey residence. 24.01.2022 Today we’re bringing you a Before and After photo. The old small timber windows in this bathroom are being replaced with full height aluminum framed windows. This will allow additional light into this small space creating the feeling of a bigger room, and have the added benefit of low maintenance on the window frames that will not be subject to rot as they are exposed to moisture. Considering that the access to the window is limited, and that it is in a wet room, it is smart to consider the long-term maintenance of structural fittings such as windows that can not easily be replaced later in the life-cycle of your home. 19.01.2022 Another one of our projects has reached another milestone. We have completed the cellar excavation and have begun construction of the timber frames. It has been a challenge completing the slab over the cellar during Melbourne’s lock-down so we are happy to be able to make progress and begin the form of this home. 18.01.2022 This has been an unusual project for us. We normally work in the residential space but we were asked to take on this commercial project - updating the Mechanical Ventilation System for a restaurant in Melbourne's CBD. It's been a big job for something that seems simple, replacing the ventilation system required plenty of permits, stakeholders and trades. Being a commercial property there were also numerous commercial Building Codes that needed to be met. 17.01.2022 Its business as usual for us still, even though as a state we are facing restrictions again. We have several projects under construction at the moment all at various stages. We are now installing the internal wall linings at this home and you can really get a sense of how the rooms will be. 16.01.2022 It’s been a while since we have posted a project update, but we have still been busy behind the screen and out on site even with government restrictions in effect. The project below is almost ready for hand-over and we hope our client enjoys many happy years in her new living, bathroom and kitchen. The photo below shows the house at the start of the renovation just after the garage and old deck were demolished, and the new landscaping and rear facade. The addition of large bi...-folding patio doors allows plenty of natural light into the home, and easy outdoor entertaining in summer when you can open the interior to the summer weather. 04.01.2022 Time for a light-hearted weekend wind-down. Today is Halloween so we thought we’d do a quick history of the origins of the tradition. Did you know that it evolved around protecting your home? Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celts that lived 2000 years ago across Ireland, the UK and France. It is believed that Halloween has its origins from the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in) which marked the end of Summer and the Harvest period, and was celebrated o...n November 1st. The end of Summer was also the start of the dark, cold winters experienced by Europe, where food was often scarce and death was common. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and dead became weaker and that the ghosts of the dead could return to earth. Much like The Day of the Dead festivals in Mexican traditions, this was a time to celebrate past ancestors who would help protect them in the future. To commemorate Samhain, the Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the Celts, typically in costume of animal skins, gathered to burn sacrifices and tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebrations were over, the Celts re-lit their home hearth fires that they had extinguished earlier to mark the end of the year, with fire from the Druids sacred bonfires in the belief that it would help protect them and their homes during the coming winter. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor All Saints; incorporating some of the traditions of Samhain to attract followers from Pagan communities. The evening before All Saints Day (also called All-hallowmas) was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. So, you can see although the modern version involves spooky ghouls, witches and black cats, Halloween, is a day to honour the past, and look to the future, therefore in the spirit of all things renewed, Happy Halloween from our team.
