25.01.2022 The visit to Murray Island was a highlight of our trip when researching Boot and Ashmore Reefs for my book. Australia’s Coral Sea Islands. www.coralseaexplorers.com

25.01.2022 Another delivery of books underway today. I have been getting some great feed back from international cruisers unable to depart Australia but still looking for that remote island experience.

24.01.2022 Day 8 Flinders reef, Main Cay situated 130 miles NE of Townsville. Phoenix 9 reports the passage was assisted with 20 knots of wind from the SE allowing us to arrive ahead of time. The structure on the island is an AWS. The Phoenix 9 will conduct scheduled oil changes today ahead of some work on the AWS. The anchorage in this location good in light winds however the powder like sand offers poor holding. Tonight the Phoenix 9 will make passage to Holmes reef.

21.01.2022 Day3 Arrived at Cato Island which is a remote cay 240 miles east of Gladstone. Phoenix 9 reports the passage from Gannet Cay challenged Phoenix 9 with a confused swell of 1.5 to 2metre until midnight easing to northly swell of 1/2 metre by the morning with 10kts NNW wind. There are three known wrecks here. The structure on the island is an AWS.

21.01.2022 Wow not much more to say

20.01.2022 Something we have been working on! #rpycpng100

20.01.2022 It’s #plasticfreejuly! We snorkeled around this pristine reef, part of the green zone, which does not allow fishing. It was absolutely gorgeous! Super healthy c...orals flourishing with life! Then we dived some deeper mounds of coral just outside the green zone and I found a lot of fishing line. I used my dive knife for the first time to carefully remove it to save the coral from further damage and any creatures from potential entanglement. It’s the first time I’ve dived outside of a green zone on the Great Barrier Reef and the first time I’ve removed debris here besides the odd snorkel or weight pocket that we found in the Yongala Shipwreck. It felt good to dive with a purpose again, but it’s sad to find such a lovely reef wrapped in fishing line. Fishermen, please be cautious with your lines and fish responsibly to help us preserve our precious reefs! 19.01.2022 Day 5 Arrived Marion Reef, Carola Cay 310 miles east of Townsville. Phoenix 9 reports the passage was smooth cruising with 10 knots NNE wind. There is a string of cays that dot the whole SE ridge of the reef. Carola Cay has a weather station on it AWS. The anchorage in this area is superb. The northern half of the reef is now a green zone. Tonight the Phoenix 9 will voyage to Lihou Reef. There was some coral bleaching in the area known as the fish bowl. However west of that in the same lagoon reef was in good health.

18.01.2022 I would like to say a huge thank you to John and Jenny of Wavelength charters Port Douglas for their kind invitation to take a look at their reef restoration pr...oject at Opal Reef yesterday. I am often asked if the reef is dead, the answer is clearly NO! its in great shape. All photos taken yesterday and no edits conducted, there is a lot more to see. (thanks also Karlina) See more

17.01.2022 Not quite the Coral sea but certainly worth watching if you like shipwrecks.

17.01.2022 Day 6 Phoenix 9 reports the passage from Marion to Lihou was calm with 10 knots of wind from East. Lihou Reef lies 330 miles east of Cairns. Lihou reef is a large Atoll with a band of complex of reefs on which 23 cays lie. Many of the cays have significant vegetation and abundant wild life. The diving here is spectacular and varied. There are 7 known ship wrecks on this Atoll. This morning the crew enjoyed exploring Wreck of the Queen Christina. This afternoon we will be travelling to the Diamond Islands.

17.01.2022 Day 10 Bougainville reef is an Atoll with a narrow band of reef surrounding it. Shipwrecks here have been aplenty with two major wrecks still visible above the horizon. Anchorage here is difficult and reference to my book Australia’s Coral Sea Islands is recommended. The diving here offers every thing from shallow reef tops to sheer walls that plummet to depths. Phoenix 9 reports the passage was average with 20 knots of SE wind and 3 metre seas. At least it was behind us, arrived 6.30am and wind has dropped to 12 knots ESE. Tonight will mark the final leg of this voyage as the Phoenix 9 is due back in Port tomorrow.

16.01.2022 The Schmidt Ocean institute are exploring much deeper than I can in my backyard.

15.01.2022 Day 4 Phoenix 9 reports that there was no swell and no wind during the passage to Frederick Reef. Frederick Reef is a remote reef 310 miles east of Mackay. The anchorage is good with depth between 12 - 15 metres. The lighthouse takes on the appearance of a rocket ship also hold a AWS. There is a particularly pleasant snorkel dive in the lagoon on the eastern side of Lighthouse Cay. Tonight the Phoenix 9 departs for Marion Reef.

15.01.2022 Day 9 Situated 120 miles east of Cairns, Holmes reef consists of 3 main reef systems, there are seasonal cays that appear spasmodically. This is a large reef complex with lots of diving unfortunately we are only here for the day to conduct some repairs to the AWS. Phoenix 9 reports the passage was rough with 30 knots wind from the SE. The anchorage there is good, wind this morning is 18 knots SE. Tonight the Phoenix 9 will set course to Bougainville reef.

15.01.2022 Australia's Coral Sea Islands not you typical island experience. Take a closer look www.coralseaexplorers.com

14.01.2022 Australia’s Coral Sea Islands, Frederick reef. Glen a regular crew member put this clip to get her a few years back. I thought some may find it interesting. The wind was 30 to 40 kts for 4 days. The anchorage rolled at high tide but was reasonable most of the time. Outside of the reef was just a mess at around 3 to 4 metre. The sense settled about a day after the wind died.

13.01.2022 After 3 days of passage we made our way to Middleton Reef. The wreckage of the Runick is the first thing that we saw. We got so excited that we couldnd't resist..., even if it was on the outside part of the reef, shaky and normally not acceptable, We decided to go, but this time, the water was so calm and gentle that we could take a change and explore it. It was amazing!! Check our channel on youtube. When the world has become a different place and isolation is neccessary, we chose to isolate on the great ocean path through to paradise in the Coral Sea. Follow us on our journeys! 10.01.2022 Day 2 Phoenix 9 and crew arrived at Gannet Cay first thing this morning, Excellent conditions - NE east winds no swell. Gannet Cay is located in the Swains group of reefs 130 mile NE of Gladstone. Gannet Cay is in a pink zone and special approval is required. The Automatic weather station (AWS) was located on the centre of the cay in the 1980s but now lays separate to the cay in 2 metres of water. Blast from the past young Capt Pete. At gannet cay In the 1980's.

09.01.2022 Just stumbled across this video again, by accident. It just reminded me I’m over due to go to sea again. Lots of people here to tag so please help me out.

09.01.2022 For those that know me, you will know that this is how my adventure planning begins. I think this is on about page five of my book of big ideas. I was meant to visit this area on my way back from New Caledonia, but Covid 19 called for a change in sail plans.

08.01.2022 Day1 of the latest adventure on board Phoenix 9. Steaming to Creal Reef located 80nm East of Hamilton Island in the Hydrographers passage. Creal reef has two large structures, the larger being the lighthouse and the smaller one an Automatic Weather Station (AWS). The anchorage is poor and often frequented by strong currents. There is a small cay that covers at High tide. Stay tuned for our next location and pictures.

06.01.2022 Phoenix 9 lays comfortably at anchor at Bagaman island in the Louisiade Archipelago Papua New Guinea, as trading boats sail past to an island shore with beautiful coral to be greeted with smiles from children. How good does life get.

04.01.2022 Australia's Coral Sea Island Teritory is Australia’s premium cruising ground and it’s been a secret to now . Peter has released his book and is now for sale at www.coralseaexplorers.com

02.01.2022 This is what we’ve been up to in the past 2 weeks. 1700 nautical miles across the Coral Sea. Let’s just call it Island hopping.

02.01.2022 This morning we completed the MEDEVAC of an injured crew member aboard a sailing catamaran in the Coral Sea. AMSA received a request for urgent medical assistan...ce via our friends at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Noumea after a crew member aboard the yacht was injured on Monday. This morning the patient was winched aboard Rescue 510 and transferred to Cairns hospital. The yacht was located near Lihou Reef about 600 kilometres east of Cairns when the rescue operation occurred and AMSA's Challenger Jet filmed this footage while providing top cover and communications relay for the rescue helicopter. Thanks to everyone involved in this tricky MEDEVAC and best wishes to the injured crew member.

02.01.2022 China’s exploitation of the world’s fish stocks is far greater than previously thought, with research showing the country has more than 12,000 vessels fishing b...eyond its waters, three times more than previous estimates. The Chinese fleet is the biggest contributor to the global fisheries crisis, which has resulted in two thirds of the world’s commercial stocks being overfished or fished to the limit, according to a report by the Overseas Development Institute, a think tank. China consumes more than a third of fish caught globally and is targeting the high seas or waters belonging to other countries after depleting its own stocks, the report says. At least 183 of the Chinese distant water vessels those that fish outside national waters have been found to be involved in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, it adds. The study identified 1,821 of the Chinese vessels as trawlers, many of which are suspected of carrying out bottom trawling, a particularly destructive fishing technique. Almost 1,000 of the vessels were found to be registered overseas, with 518 flying the flags of African nations. The report suggests that China is taking advantage of poor governance in developing countries by getting them to sign fisheries agreements that allow unsustainable levels of fishing in their waters. #TheOceanPlanet #SaveOurOceans #StopTrawlers #Fishing #SuperTrawlers #China #Japan #OverFishing #IllegalFishing

01.01.2022 Day 7 Diamond Islands 240 miles NE of Townsville. Phoenix 9 reports the passage was good with 20knots of wind from the SE. The anchorage there is excellent. East Diamond Island is the Jewel in the Crown of anchorages in the Coral Sea a walk ashore will not disappoint. Turtles are abundant here during the Turtle breeding season. Phoenix 9 settled to anchor in 17 metres of water. This afternoon Phoenix 9 will raise anchor and depart for Flinders Reef with an early morning ETA.
