20.01.2022 Our Attitudes to Ageing survey is still live, and we're still keen to hear from people about what they think and feel about getting older! Whether you're 20, 50 or 90 - anyone can complete our quick 5 minute survey and help us better understand the barriers and opportunities to ageing well in Tasmania - something that, hopefully, all of us will do. Complete the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AttitudestoAgeingSurvey or contact COTA Tasmania on 6231 3265 or email [email protected] to have a hard copy or postcard sent to you.

20.01.2022 Counting down to the online launch of Seniors Week at 10.30am on Thursday 1 October - the International Day of Older Persons. It's free to all and you don't even have to dress up. Or leave the house/office. Only thing is; you'll have to supply your own tea and bikkies this year. The launch features interviews with respected older Tasmanians actively ageing in their communities, and finishes with a chat and some songs from the popular Croon vocal trio. Everybody is welcome - but you MUST register to receive the access link and other info. Register here: https://us02web.zoom.us//register/WN_VMXKmQtvQ-CAJ0JH3q3xnw

18.01.2022 Please read the Mercury's front page report about the experience of an older person in the Roy Fagan Centre. We know it is the holiday period and it is hard to read such a graphic account but we must open our eyes to what is happening in the places we entrust to care for our loved ones. As this incident demonstrates, it's not just aged care homes but also older persons' mental health facilitied like Roy Fagin that require independent investigation to determine whether they are appropriately staffed and scrutinised to ensure they provide the kind of care that protects human rights and dignity.

10.01.2022 Cabinet documents from 2000 released today remind us how long we have known about abuses in aged care. Remember the Victorian aged care residents subjected to kerosene baths two decades ago? As the ABC notes, "Given the crisis which has hit aged care in the last few years, including the decision to call a royal commission in 2018, these references are particularly telling." The Royal Commission hands down its final report next month. When that happens, we all will have to be vigilant in making sure that recommendations for improvement are actually enacted. Our New Year's wish for older Tasmanians receiving care is that 2021 will be the year that decades of unspeakable ageism end once and for all.

07.01.2022 Back in the gym, at any time! From today, gyms and sport/recreation facilities will no longer be required to be staffed at all times whilst open. This means th...at gyms can be open 24/7. Although they won’t always have staff on site, gyms are still required to meet current COVID safety standards. You can play a big part in helping with this by following some simple rules: Bring your own towels and other equipment such as yoga mats, boxing gloves etc. Wash your hands when you arrive and practise physical distancing. Clean equipment thoroughly both before and after you use it. Where appropriate, keep hand sanitiser nearby for frequent use. Don’t visit the gym or any other facility if you have cold or flu-like symptoms.

07.01.2022 It's NAIDOC Week! COTA Tasmania sends our deepest respects to all Tasmania's Aboriginal people.

06.01.2022 Hobart testing clinic - update 26 December 2020 The Hobart COVID testing clinic will go back to a booking system.... This follows a higher than anticipated response to the no booking trial that began on Christmas Day. The change only impacts Hobart with no bookings required for the other clinics statewide during the three-week trial. After another busy day at the Hobart clinic this morning, it was decided to restore the booking system to minimise disruption to attendees and ensure the most safe and effective management of the site. People are definitely heeding the message and getting tested if they start showing any cold or flu-like symptoms. We would like to thank those who turned up at the Hobart clinic over the last two days for their patience and understanding. People wanting to book an appointment at the Hobart Clinic should contact the testing hotline on 1800 671 738. Testing sites across the state are open through the festive period. These are the opening hours through to Jan 1: Sunday 27 to Thursday 31 December (Hobart, Launceston and Burnie) 8:30am to 3.30pm Sunday 27 to Thursday 31 December (East Devonport) - 7.30am to 2.30pm Friday 1 January (all clinics) 8:30am to 11:30am All COVID-19 testing clinics will return to normal hours of operation from Saturday 2 January 2021. Further information on the opening times can be found at Testing for COVID-19 | Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) 395 tests were conducted statewide in the 24 hours between 6pm on 24 December and 6pm on 25 December. 816 tests were conducted during the previous 24-hour period.

05.01.2022 Vale Susan Ryan - a wonderful woman who stood up for the rights of older people- former Age Discrimination Commissioner for Australia- it was an honour to have her present to a COTA Tasmania AGM during her term.

05.01.2022 COTA Tasmania has been raising issues of concern about rights and care of older people in our health system and aged care - as CEO Sue Leitch said in her opinion piece before Christmas in the Mercury - we must do better- as a society we need to care better and with people’s rights in clear view of how we do this and how we would want to be cared for ourselves. We MUST do better.
