25.01.2022 Brown Thornbill. This little guy is found throughout eastern Australia in a lot of different habitats. They hang around in small groups and are very active, hardly sitting still for a photo. Except this one Hallston, Victoria

24.01.2022 White-naped Honeyeater, Adams Creek Nature Reserve, Nyora, Vic. Gotta love that eyeliner!

24.01.2022 A male Sacred Kingfisher. This common kingfisher is found in most of Australia except the central deserts and it inhabits mostly forests and woodlands. Its presence is often known by its loud 'kek kek kek kek kek' call. www.wildportraits.com.au https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits

23.01.2022 Although I've been a bit slack on my art lately I have managed to get out with the camera a bit luckily. This is a Striated Fieldwren in full song near Wonthaggi, Victoria. These guys love heathlands along the coast of eastern Australia and have a long and loud call while they perch on top of high vegetation.

23.01.2022 A pencil illustration I completed last year for my Grandma in Western Australia who loves native Australian plants. This is Caladenia filifera (Blood Spider Orchid) from south west WA. Feel free to check out more at my website and instagram page. www.wildportraits.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/... #bloodspiderorchid #spiderorchid #orchid #caladenia #caladeniafilifera #australiannativeplants #australianorchids #waflora #westernaustralianflora #australianflora #australianbotanicalart #botanicalart #botanicalartist #fabercastellpolychromos #pencilillustration #australianartist

23.01.2022 One of Australia's most beautiful Mistletoes, Muellerina eucalyptoides or Creeping Mistletoe. This plant is a native semi-parasite of eucalypt trees in eastern Australia. It is spread almost exclusively by the small Mistletoe Bird (see my previous post) who eats the berries and excretes the sticky seeds on the host tree's branch where the new plant grows. Often exposed trees subjected to stress such as land clearing or habitat changes will be more prone to 'infestation' of th...e plants. The mistletoe once growing on the host tree relies on it for water and minerals but it can photosynthesize itself. www.wildportraits.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/

22.01.2022 Spotted Quail-thrush. I've been wanting to photograph this bird for many years now. It's listed as near threatened in Victoria and is one of the most elusive and sneaky birds to find. I've only had fleeting glimpses in the past but I just happened to stop at a patch of bush to stretch my legs during a long drive and it appeared. Luckily my camera is always within reach! Mullungdung Nature Conservation Reserve, Vic.

21.01.2022 The tiny and elusive Southern Emu-wren (male). This species is very cryptic and frustrating to photograph as they tend to hide themselves in their low heath habitat, rarely showing their face. Well I guess I was damn lucky with this one! Walkerville South, Victoria. www.wildportraits.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/

21.01.2022 Buff-banded Rail and hatchlings. I came across a family of these rails with 2 parents and 3 hatchlings. The hatchlings were constantly bathing in a small puddle and the parents were trying to coax them out with food. They eventually moved out and the parents showed them how to find their own food. www.wildportraits.com.au https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/

20.01.2022 Caption this White-browed Woodswallow, Gippsland, Vic.

20.01.2022 One of my favourite mediums to work with, graphite pencil. This is the Black-scaped Bull Ant , a large ant of southern Australia which can grow up to 2.5cm in length. www.wildportraits.com.au

18.01.2022 The Wrap-around Spider (Dolophones sp.) of Australia. This small spider is a master of camouflage by flattening and wrapping its body around twigs. www.wildportraits.com.au https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/

15.01.2022 Pencil illustration of the endangered New Holland Mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae). This species is very close to my heart as Ive assisted in surveys of them in central Gippsland for the last few years and continue to do so. This was done using Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencil. This species is found in SE Australia including Tasmania. In Victoria its had a rapid decline in numbers and has become locally extinct in over half of the 12 historical locations. These popu...lations are very isolated and prone to a wide range of threats. It lives mostly in coastal heath and heathy woodland and eats seeds, fungi and leaves. Zoos Victoria, amonst others, have been involved in a conservation program for this species. Check out their website and maybe consider donating to their efforts. https://www.zoo.org.au//local-threatene/new-holland-mouse/ Also feel free to check out my instagram page or my website below. My art is for sale as originals or prints and I also do commissions. https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/ https://www.wildportraits.com.au #newhollandmouse #pseudomysnovaehollandiae #threatenedspeciesaustralia #australianthreatenedspecies #endangeredspecies #endangeredspeciesaustralia #nativemice #australianmammals #australianwildlife #victorianwildlife #australianwildlifeart #fabercastellpolychromos #pencilillustration #australianartist #centralgippsland #zoosvictoria

14.01.2022 These two birds are tree trunk specialists in Australia. The first is the White-throated Treecreeper and the second is the Varied Sitella. Both feed on invertebrates they find on or under rough barked tree trunks and branches. The treecreeper usually flies to the near the base of the tree and works up the trunk into the canopy whereas Sitellas tend to work their way downwards from the canopy. Both species have elongated claws which they use to cling to the bark, sometimes upside down. Gippsland, Victoria.

14.01.2022 White's Skink (Liopholis whitii). This beautiful skink likes a wide range of mostly dry habitats in south-eastern Australia. They construct complex burrows which small family groups share. Hernes Oak, Victoria www.wildportraits.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/

13.01.2022 Finally completed my kangaroo! The more I Iook at it the more detail I keep adding. Step away from the kangaroo, Craig, step away! What do people think? Eastern Grey Kangaroo in graphite pencil.

12.01.2022 Close encounters of the Echidna kind. Australia's Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus). The amazing ant-seeking snout is equipped with hundreds of electroreceptors to locate ants and termites, its only food. Related to the Platypus it is a monotreme which lays eggs and has the second lowest active body temperature of any mammal, behind the platypus. www.wildportraits.com.au/... https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/ See more

12.01.2022 My painting is finally done! Still needs to be professionally scanned but Im happy with the results. This is just a phone pic so the lighting is terrible. This is a male Spotted Pardalote in gouache paint on A3 watercolour paper. Once scanned it will be available as a print, digital download or purchased as the original. More products coming soon. For more info you can contact me through my website (in process of being revamped), Insta or through this facebook page. www.wildp...ortraits.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/ See more

11.01.2022 Pink Hyacinth Orchid (Dipodium roseum), a leafless orchid found in eastern and south-eastern Australia. It is saprophytic meaning it obtains most of its energy and nutrition from dead and decaying matter as it cant photosynthesize well enough due to lack of leaves. It flowers in late summer. www.wildportraits.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/

11.01.2022 I always love photographing wrens. This is the male Splendid Fairy-Wren at Wyperfield National Park last spring. Such brilliant irridescent colours on these birds. Can't wait to get back to Victoria's mallee country soon. #splendidfairywren #malurussplendens #fairywrensofaustralia #birdlifeoz #birdsofaustralia #wyperfieldnationalpark #mallee #malleecma #australianbirds #australianbirdphotography #victorianwildlife #victorianbirds #birdphotographyaustralia #birdphotography #mynikonlife

11.01.2022 Little Forest Bat (Vespadelus vulturnus) is the smallest mammal in southern Australia and one of the smallest in the world. It weighs a tiny 4 grams! This is one of many types of microbats in Australia and they feed mostly on insects. They are important in controlling insect populations. Gippsland, Victoria. www.wildportraits.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/

10.01.2022 Southern Brown Bandicoot (Isoodon obesulus) today at Royal Botanic Gardens, Cranbourne, Victoria. This species is listed as threatened in Victoria but here in Cranbourne the population is quite healthy and stable. Small digging marsupials like this are known to turn over around 4 tonnes of soil in a year and are extremely important in aerating the soil and spreading fungi and seeds. www.wildportraits.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/craigboase_wildportraits/

10.01.2022 A pencil drawing in progress of a White-bellied Sea Eagle. Coloured pencil on black paper is not something I've done much of but so far its turning out ok I hope. Will keep you all posted when its completed.

07.01.2022 A photo I took of the beautiful but threatened Swamp Skink (Lissolepis coventryi) under the eerie glow of smoke from the devastating Gippsland fires in January this year. 06.01.2022 A Grey Fantail doing what Fantails do. I noticed this bird constantly flitting around burnt tree trunks, probably hunting insects. The red bark under the burnt trunk stood out vividly so I had to snap off a photo. The image hasnt been altered apart from a quick brightening of it as it was shot in very low light. I've still left it a bit dark to add atmosphere. Let me know what you think. Hallston, Victoria

05.01.2022 The Dusky Antechinus (Antechinus swainsonii). This small carnivorous marsupial is found mostly in wet forest with dense understory in far eastern Australia and Tasmania. Being a marsupial they have pouches where the young develop. They are often active during the day which is unusual with Antechinuses, and feed mostly on invertebrates and occasional small reptiles. This little guy was photographed during an ongoing wildlife survey in the Latrobe Valley. https://www.instagram....com/craigboase_wildportraits/ https://www.wildportraits.com.au #duskyantechinus #antechinus #antechinusswainsonii #victorianwildlife #victorianmammals #gippsland #gippslandwildlife #mammals #australianmammals #mammalsoftheworld #marsupials #australianmarsupials #marsupialsofinstagram #marsupial #wildlifeplanet #nature #wildlifephotography #mammalphotography #australianwildlifephotography #centralgippsland #visitgippsland @indigenousdesign

01.01.2022 An acrylic painting I did a couple years ago as a birthday present for my Dad in Western Australia. It shows Carnaby's Black Cockatoo with Banksia prionotes (Acorn Banksia) flowers. Both species are found on their farm and mean a lot to my Dad. Carnaby's Black Cockatoo is only found in south west WA and is listed as endangered. Although this piece is obviously not for sale please feel free to check out my art/photography Instagram page or my website below.
