25.01.2022 Maybe we can now agree that our crop industry suffers from "significant yield gaps"? From a talk at the recent ABARES Outlook conference, by Neil McKenzie - "an analysis over last 10 years of wheat yields for of Australia ...by Zvi Hochman and colleagues for wheat ... shows we have large areas still with significant yield gaps, often 40% to 50% of potential yield given the rainfall during the season." He goes on to suggest that the problem is soil constraints, and that it is ...a research and extension problem. But is"research and extension"? I contend that the evidence from whatever we have been doingwith research and extension for the last 25 years has not been effective in overcoming this yield gap. Any volunteers to discuss further?
