20.01.2022 Living with Diabetes? It's strange times for all at the moment! And while it's unclear if those living with diabetes have a greater chance of catching COVID-19, it is known that if they do contract the virus, they are at a heightened risk of having severe illness and needing hospital care. @Diabetesaustralia reports that people with diabetes represent 7% of diagnosed cases of COVID, 17% of hospitalised cases, 24% of ICU stays, and 25% of deaths. So what can you do? We recomme...nd remaining vigilant at all times to protect yourself and others by maintaining good hygiene practices, socially distancing, avoiding others who are sick and large public gatherings. But we also want to emphasise the importance of continuing any care regime you have in place with your GP. Make the most of Telehealth services available if you do not feel up to visiting the Practice and ensure your physical and mental health benefits from the support available. Make your next appointment online or by calling the practice. Stay well!
15.01.2022 21 September is World Alzheimer’s Day which launches us into Dementia action week from now until 27 September. Dementia Australia defines dementia as a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. It affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks. Brain function is affected enough to interfere with the person’s normal social or working life. Almost half a million Australians have dementia, and close to 1.6 million Australians... are involved in their care. Dementia is the second leading cause of death of Australians and the leading cause of death among Australian females. Alarmingly, it is anticipated that the number of people living with dementia will double in the next 25 years. 13.01.2022 ***Think F.A.S.T. Save lives!*** This year, National Stroke Week is perhaps more critical than ever. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, there have been fewer people calling triple zero (000) and going to the hospital at the first sign of a stroke. (Face, Arms, Speech and Time) acronym can save li...ves. So this week, let’s recognise the importance of thinking F.A.S.T and encourage others to become more aware of stroke, understand their risk and what they can do to prevent a stroke. 04.01.2022 October has arrived and for the whole month, we want you thinking pink! Breast Cancer Awareness month is every October and is aimed at raising awareness of the impact the disease has on thousands of Australian women each day. This year alone, almost 20,000 Australians will be diagnosed with the disease. Tragically, 3,000 women will lose their lives to breast cancer this year. Breast cancer is the second-highest cancer among Australian women, behind skin cancer. Although sur...vival rates continue to improve, we are still losing far too many women to this disease each year. There are a few different organisations out there pushing the plight of awareness of this disease. The National Breast Cancer Foundation aims to reach zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. Cancer Council drives the Pink Ribbon campaign and is hoping to raise funds for prevention programs, support services and vital cancer research. Using the month to also tie in awareness for gynaecological cancers, the Cancer Council reports that gynaecological cancer and breast cancer diagnoses together, impact 65 Australian women a day. The McGrath Foundation focuses on the FREE provision of qualified McGrath Breast Care Nurses, to support women and their families who are diagnosed with the disease. The McGrath Foundation nurses are an essential part of the medical team managing the care of people with breast cancer and have supported over 90,000 families since their inception in 2005. For the month of October, they ask people to ‘Pink Up’ to raise funds for this worthy cause. Qualitas Health shares this information to help raise awareness, in the hope you spread the word with your mother, sister, aunty, friends and colleagues. To book your Women’s Health Check, make an appointment TODAY either online or by calling the practice.
