22.01.2022 The final week of the 30-Day Challenge has arrived! Have you kept up? A few reports are better than no reports, so use the final activities to collect important plant health data. This week we’re searching for organisms doing the nightshift to observe how light and temperature affect pest activity. Activity 22 Many species increase their nocturnal activity on moonlit nights, hunting or foraging more easily under the light of the moon although risking themselves being ...Continue reading

19.01.2022 Behind the packaging you see on the shelf, is a WA business owner hustling to produce the best product they can. Grants are one way our department works to support the growth of WA businesses, either by supporting their expansion, investing in new projects or by helping to reduce risk. Rok Kombucha is one WA company that was able to use a grant to secure their future by purchasing bottling and packaging equipment. This not only reduced their risk, but it also opened opportunities to grow. Have a listen as Amanda talks about her business and also provides her tip for other businesses looking to apply for grants. Our state-wide program supports investment and expansion opportunities for the Western Australian food, beverage and value add processing industry. https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/agribusinessfunds

Activity 15 Depending on the species, insect seek shelter from the weather or from predators in a variety of places in crevices in bark, inside holes in trees, inside flowers, fruits or seeds, under rocks and other objects on the ground, and in burrows in the soil anywhere that ...Continue reading

12.01.2022 More than 250 grains research experiments across WA, including the aim and lead scientist, can now be easily found with the click of an icon, thanks to a new interactive map. Launched in September, the DPIRD innovation reflects our significant investment in grains research. The trials shown include our collaborative research with external parties, such as the Grains Research and Development Corporation, CSIRO and The University of Western Australia. The map includes trial...s at our research facilities such as Merredin, Carnarvon and Geraldton, as well as many on growers’ properties and laboratory work such as South Perth and Murdoch University. A great resource for growers, consultants and the public alike, it can be used to discover how extensive and diverse grains research is in WA and what is happening on the ground to improve productivity and profitability in the industry. https://bit.ly/3nBNHsW See more

08.01.2022 Understanding what biosecurity experts do can help us as a nation manage things better. The big picture challenges can be solved with lots of little steps. We teamed up with other state governments across Australia and proudly partnered with Costa Georgiadis of Gardening Australia to create Mission: Biosecurity. As you WATCH, PLAY & LISTEN, you’ll discover what Biosecurity is, how it can impact our way of life and how we can all help protect our environment, community and economy from biosecurity baddies. https://www.missionbiosecurity.com.au/home #missionbiosecurity

07.01.2022 You may see our Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) vehicle driving slowly through your suburb during the next few weeks. The Qfly eradication program is tracking well and set to enter a new phase in an effort to wipe out any remaining wild Qfly in the Quarantine Area (QA). Response personnel will be releasing sterile Qfly via a slow-moving specialised, marked vehicle. Once released, the sterile Qfly are expected to mate with their wild counterparts, resulting in infertile eggs and t...herefore no future hatchings of fruit fly larvae. A key defence in eliminating localised Qfly outbreaks, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) does not harm beneficial insects or the environment. 02.01.2022 As part of our intensive Qfly Spring baiting program, the operations team recently established a new base at Claremont Showground, located within the Quarantine Area. The move has provided the team with adequate space to complete important operational activities such as field team logistics, storage, increased office space and car parking. Almost 300 field staff have been visiting 13,000 properties to complete baiting and surveillance activities. More than 100,000 inspections have been completed and over 250,000 host plants identified as part of the ongoing eradication program. We have employed 9 Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia staff who have been unable to work on activities related to the annual Perth Royal Show. These staff are now undertaking various roles within the response.
