25.01.2022 We won’t know what the ‘new normal’ of life is going to be yet, so let’s keep our eyes and ears open for good suggestions and practices that we want to see as part of that new world. It could be as simple as the frequent cleaning of rubbish bins around Boroondara or more public open space or increased recycling programs.more independent traders, more bee & pollinator friendly planting..or more free public entertainment. Whatever your ideas are, I’d love to hear from you.

25.01.2022 Lots of form filling and some very careful attention to specific word counts.....finally done and I'm officially nominated to stand for Junction Ward. Good luck to all candidates and to the next 4 years of sound and progressive Council leadership of Boroondara.

24.01.2022 In the words of Prof. Charles Sowerwine Heritage is recognition and protection for buildings that have become part of the culture. ... proof that our forebears built well and reassurance that we are part of a generational chain of humanity linked to place...an important source of cultural stability.... (and is ) becoming more important as our society undergoes what seem like waves of disruptive change... I offer you some of the beauty of heritage buildings in Auburn Village. I want to be part of a strong local Council voice prepared to engage with State authorities to protect our architectural heritage. Once it’s gone ... it’s too late.

23.01.2022 Things are quickly coming together - with parklets like these being installed in some of our major shopping strips today! Outdoor dining is well and truly takin...g off around Boroondara, and we’re so excited! As of this week: Over 140 applications for footpath trading have been fast tracked Around 90 businesses were assisted to secure more outdoor dining space on their private land 10 businesses were supported to trade in some of Boroondara’s public spaces Installation of parklets in about 30 locations commenced across the City We can’t wait until these spaces are all decked out and ready to go! Keep an eye out for outdoor dining near you and be sure to keep supporting our local businesses.

21.01.2022 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! It really is that easy for each one of us to make a difference.

19.01.2022 Sorry to see the Camberwell Bendigo Bank branch is now temporarily closed for up to three months as they’ve had to reassign the staff to other duties. You can still access the ATM and online banking. Don’t forget you also have Bendigo Community Banks close by in Canterbury, Ashburton, Surrey Hills, Balwyn, and Kew East. Just in the past year, they've invested over half a million dollars into sports clubs, aged care, disability services, early childhood and schools. 19.01.2022 I’m sure you know someone you could nominate. That in itself is a great recognition of their work in service to others. Authorised; www.digillies.com

18.01.2022 Every time Council puts out a survey asking residents what they value most about Boroondara, the answer inevitably includes the trees. They reduce heat impacts with shade, they process carbon dioxide, they harbour biodiversity, they reduce water runoff, they look fantastic. The magnificent trees and public gardens that we enjoy today are only there thanks to the foresight of our predecessors. Are we doing all we can to leave the right legacy after our time? Every time a development is planned, we must ask the question, ‘where are the trees?’ We must protect what we can and replace (abundantly) when we can’t.

18.01.2022 A post today about posters. My sincere and humble thanks to all the wonderful people who have agreed, (and even offered) to display 30 signs around Junction Ward. Often called ‘corflutes’ I’ve chosen instead to use a 100 % biodegradable Enviroboard. It’s not easy recycling corflutes and I think this alternative is one way we can look at finding better solutions. www.digillies.com

18.01.2022 One of our beautiful neighbours took the initiative to buy daffodils from this year’s Cancer Council’s annual fundraiser and offer them around with an encouragement to donate to this wonderful organisation. Many Not For Profit organisations are struggling to survive as so many funding sources have dried up under COVID -19 . Whenever you can, wherever you can , please look to support them.

18.01.2022 Have you seen Spoonville villages popping up around Boroondara? It’s a simple community minded idea , originating in the UK and now gaining momentum in many countries. It surely makes you smile and rejoice in the resourceful creativity of children.

18.01.2022 Do I say I’m standing for election.... or do I say I’m running for election ? Either way I’m hoping to represent Junction Ward in Boroondara Council after the October local government elections.

17.01.2022 Good morning and welcome to the beginning of the pointy-end for Council elections. Candidates will be officially nominating later this week and the public campaigning ramps up. I am thriving on the conversations and discussions, so please don't hesitate to contact me. We launched the website last night! https://wwwdigillies.com/ Authorised Di Gillies POBox 599 hawthorn 31

16.01.2022 Sad to see our local Dymocks temporarily closed during Stage 4 restrictions but we can still keep reading.

16.01.2022 First stage of the public co sultation is open folks... don’t let the opportunity pass to have input into developing this important plan.

14.01.2022 A number of people have talked to me this week about their frustrating experiences communicating with Council. Whilst the issues aren’t necessarily straight forward, one common denominator appears to be the gaps between bureaucracy and reality. Improving transparency isn’t achieved through lengthy recitation of laws and policies. More use of plain language, genuine consultation and clarity in outlining processes would go a long way towards finding resolutions that do work. The incoming Councillors must be prepared to keep Council accountable. Authorisation at [email protected]

12.01.2022 It hasn’t sunk in yet but I’m told that a vote result of 52% on first counting is something of a landslide. So my very grateful and humble thanks to all the voters, friends, neighbours, and supporters who have been on this journey with us. It’s you who inspired me to stand for Council and it’s for you that I’ll take the privilege and responsibility seriously. Stay in touch!

09.01.2022 Many of the Council election results will only be known after counting of preference votes, so they’ll be waiting until early next week for final numbers. I was thrilled and honoured to be advised yesterday that I received 51.2% of the votes for Junction Ward. Although there are some ballots still be received, this result is significantly ahead of the other candidates and is expected to be maintained. My sincere thanks again for the trust placed in me and I will do my utmost to fulfil this responsibility. Now to celebrate the day by continuing on my sponsored ‘End Polio Now’ walk raising funds to eradicate this debilitating disease. Every dollar is tripled by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. https://www.rotarywalkwithus.org/fun/digillies/walk-with-us Authorised; www.digillies.com

09.01.2022 Did Fritsch Holzer Park result from Boroondara’s First Community Environmental Action? Fritsch Holzer comes from Augustus Fritsch and the Holzer brothers (Martin and Aloysius Anton), who formed the Upper Hawthorn Brick Company in Symonds St, Hawthorn East in 1883. The largest brick making company in Victoria. Most of the State's schools were built of these bricks. The famous Hawthorn bricks, used to build so many beautiful Victorian homes, emanated from this source. But man...y were glad to see the last of the company as coal was used to fire the huge kilns. The resulting smoke emission was an example of early industrial pollution. Years of phone calls, letters and petitions were ignored until pollution became a popular cause and the authorities finally responded. The brickworks closed in the early 1970s.The site was bought by the Hawthorn Council in 1972 and used it as a tip and waste transfer station until 1989. Council, together with the Victorian Government and the Rotary Club of Hawthorn, reconstructed the area into a park in 1995. Now, a fabulous community asset thanks to community action.

08.01.2022 Thank you to the committee and members of Camberwell Historic Society for today's Annual General Meeting and for the great work you do helping us retain and recognise the precious history that is so important to the fabric of Boroondara.

07.01.2022 A pleasant Spring-like 14C this morning and perfect for a dog walk in our gorgeous local parks and gardens. The beauty of nature renewal is definitely evident, and a salient reminder that we must care for the world around us. No Planet B as they say....

06.01.2022 If you haven't already received your Rates notice, you're about to. It's worth checking out the information on the back that gives a snapshot of where the money goes. The second biggest allocation is one of Councils' primary responsibilities, that is Environment and Waste Management. We haven't forgotten our worms but we're loving the new FOGO food and garden recycling system. Good to see our local friend Graeme putting on his usual smile (it's there under the mask) and colourful outfits when it's bin night (thanks for the OK to use your photos too Graeme). We all have a part to play in looking after our environment. Welcome to Spring folks! May it bring hope, renewal and goodwill to all

06.01.2022 Climate change and the many challenges it brings is undoubtedly the issue of our times. Have just been reading that Boroondara Council is one of 8 eastern municipalities working collectively in the Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action . Well done Council! There’s great work being done and more to do. I fully support Boroondara being committed to such action ! 06.01.2022 It's RU OK Day today. Although looking out for eachother is something to do every day....maybe today's the day you sit down with a cuppa and call someone you haven't spoken with for awhile. Or someone you think might just like to hear your cheery voice. Or someone you know is struggling with life's challenges. It can mean a lot.

03.01.2022 Brilliant idea Dymocks! Wouldn’t we all love a years worth of books.
