25.01.2022 This information is so sensible and valuable for good training.
25.01.2022 Fantastic news - great to have feedback Just wanting to say thankyou! We have successfully made it through our first electrical storm with no dramas..... My uncle previously had 2 Weimaraners and I vividly remember them doing all sorts of crazy things in storms from fear (including busting through his lounge window and through another ladies screen door) so was a bit apprehensive about storms when I got my girl! However after following a conversation on this page about thund...ershirts and then talking to the lady from Helendale Helendale Boarding Kennels, Mt Bryan I decided to take the approach that storms were no biggy! Today my pup and I had our breakfast outside (as usual) with the lightning and thunder... we played in the rain and then she went out to her yard no worries! Thankyou so much for your wisdom Helendale kennels... I am one happy owner with one happy dog! See more
23.01.2022 QUESTION OF THE WEEK....HOW MUCH TREATING DOES MY DOG NEED? Very simply not a lot, we all seem to think our dogs either won't like us or do as they're told without treats. Treats as a reward are a good idea, but when your dogs obedience becomes dependant on them, then the reverse is true. Make your dog earn his treats, and don't use the reward every time you ask the dog to perform a task, very soon you'll find your dog won't do a thing unless you feed it, and you'll have made a rod for your own back.
21.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEEK....DON'T WASTE AN OPPORTUNITY Once you have your dog's attention like you see with Goldilocks here, use this opportunity to do some training. It's like teachers trying to educate children who aren't listening, but once they do it's amazing how much can be absorbed in a short period. You don't have to work for long, even 5 productive minutes is useful. Once your dog is paying attention, devote a few minutes to training and then have a rest or knock off for the day.
19.01.2022 NEW TRICKS Hi everyone, my name is Meg, I'm a retired Working Border Collie used to working sheep, especially the rams in the shearing shed. They say you can;t teach an old dog new tricks, I'm here to say, not true. I'm 12 years old and look at me now, I'd never been taught to lead, and what had the heel command got to do with sheep work. I've got the message, all I needed was a new career path!! Now I'm learning more about obedience, hope to do Rally next year. I can't believe my luck, I've gone from living outside with a shelter, to being part of a family, by the fire in winter, and air conditioning in summer. I may be senior, but I'm full of the joy of life. More about me and my adventures next week. Little secret, I steal other dog's toys and bury them
18.01.2022 QUESTION OF THE WEEK... I WANT TO DO AGILITY, WHY WASTE TIME ON OBEDIENCE? This is a spin off from last week's post, because so many feel you can just decide to take up agility without good groundwork. Below is Mia, trained to level 5 obedience, and a dog I have full control over. You can see how amenable she is here making room for a cheeky Dachshund in the tunnel. She's completely obedient off lead and has learnt signals for left and right. In other words her training has... allowed me to be able to take the next step and teach her directional training. All I need is hand signals, voice and a reward. Without a basic foundation training none of this would be possible, and agility would be a nightmare. Mia knows what is expected of her, and is eager to please.
17.01.2022 PROFESSIONAL KENNELS OR IN HOME PET CARE- HINDSIGHT IS ALWAYS TOO LATE. A recent incident at home set me thinking about this and made me realise how easily accidents can happen. We went out for the day and left one dog outside and two inside. Now we know we have a problem with two of these dogs fighting, so I checked the door, put another barrier in place, and a safety barrier inside. You'd think that would cover it, but no, we came home to find the barriers gone, door open,... and my precious dog badly injured. What I should have done was put her in kennels for the day. There she would have had her own yard, which she couldn't get out of, and I'd have had the security of knowing she was safe. You might wonder what this has to do with placing your dog in a kennel when you go away, the issue is safety and security. A professional kennel has both lock up night time kennels and secure day yards. Home might seem the pleasant option as it is familiar to the dog, but if your dog is outside while you're on holiday, how do you prevent someone getting in and stealing your much loved family pet. The answer is, you can't. The fees will be similar, but for me I want the comfort and security of a professional kennel, and the knowledge someone is around, especially at night. It will be weeks before my dog is better, and can go back into training. Think carefully when making a decision re holiday time pet care. This isn't about you, rather about the welfare of your treasured pet.
17.01.2022 AGILITY THE ULTIMATE DOG SPORT....HOW MUCH DOES MY DOG NEED TO KNOW BEFORE IT CAN PARTICIPATE? Everyone wants to join in with this dog sport, but most would rather forgo basic training. Your dog needs to be under control both on lead and off, which means joining in and passing obedience training to the required level. Unless your dog can heel, stay when asked or do a good recall, this is a sport you'll have trouble with. Training clubs require this basic training before you t...ake on agility, respect these wishes and make your life easier, shortcuts never work. If you're interested contact Dogs SA and find when some competitions are on, then go and have a look. You can't beat good foundation training.
12.01.2022 BANJO THE RATBAG RESCUE........LIFE IS GOOD I've been told to tell you just how sick I was before my last post. All a bit funny now, but at the time my owners were so convinced that I'd die they'd already dug my grave, doesn't bear thinking about. I had the last laugh, after being left alone for about 20 minutes gasping my last up I got and started walking around. Boy were they shocked to find not only was I okay, but I expected to be fed. Australian bred dogs must be one of ...the toughest there is. The training side of my story is all good too, I've been at dog school for a while, and amazingly I now have doggy friends. All the fear and tension has gone, and I trust my owners to look after me, now we've reached that stage it's on with having a good time. Learning to drop and stay in a difficult situation works like a treat for me, now I can even weave around other dogs, and I'm learning stays and recalls. I wonder what I'm capable of doing, find out next time.
11.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK......BEFORE TRYING TO TEACH YOUR DOG ANYTHING MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ITS ATTENTION. Seems a simple thing, but quite often we forget to get the dog to pay attention. Don't try this if the dog is excited or showing signs of excess energy, you need to mange that first then ask the dog to listen. Use your voice, a toy or food, but don't bribe the dog, reward when it pays attention and try again. Keep reinforcing good behaviour, but don't feed the dog to get a result, otherwise he won't do anything unless fed. As soon as the dog is listening give it something to do, a few paces forward and sit, get his attention and reward. Take a break and repeat the process, it won't happen over night, but anything worthwhile needs to be worked for.
11.01.2022 QUESTION OF THE WEEK...HOW MUCH EXERCISE DOES MY DOG NEED? This will vary between breeds, but like us all dogs need exercise to maintain good health and get the most out of life. Just because you have a small dog, doesn't mean it won't need to run around, the trick is to buy the right breed to suit the amount of time you have and your lifestyle. Don't buy a working or very active breed if you only have 20mins spare a day, they need far more. Mine get well over an hour a day, plus they run free for the rest of time. Dogs which don't get sufficient exercise often exhibit behavioural problems brought about by pent up energy and boredom. A lot of the chewing and other destructive behaviour can be remedied by giving the dog enough to do. You can't expect your pet to be quiet and compliant if he's frustrated.
09.01.2022 BANJO THE RATBAG RESCUE.....LIFE JUST GETS BETTER Been a couple of weeks, but a lot has happened, I got bitten by something and was sick for a while. My owners thought I'd die, but not me, paralysed for a while then miraculously up and about looking for my dinner, strange but true. I've gone back to training again, maybe I'm mellowed by my experience, I seem to be finding everything a lot easier. What was difficult before is so much easier, I'm getting used to being around ot...her dogs, and doing a drop isn't difficult or frightening now, in fact it makes me feel safe. We've even started weaving around other dogs, I'm trying so hard not to growl or look mean. I'm a bit tired now, so I'll tell you more next time, still not 100% fit. Bye for now.
08.01.2022 BANJO GOES BACK TO DOG SCHOOL...HOW DID HE FARE? Can you believe this, I'm back at school with all those dogs again. This is so hard not to mention nerve wracking, plus I'm expected to behave. All I feel like doing is hiding behind my human until this is over and we can go home. Here we go, they're calling the class so it'll be finished soon. Oh no, we're doing drops today, I so hate that it's really hard to growl and lunge from a drop, and that's just what the instructor's s...aying. She says the drop is a very submissive position for the dog, and she wants my owners to put me in a drop every time I look like getting into mischief, we'll see about that. Okay here we go, and I'm on the ground again. We've been practising this for most of the lesson, and I've decided it's so much more simple to do what's asked of me. Strangely enough I actually feel more confident lying quietly at my owner's feet, so I guess someone has the right idea. Let you know next week how it goes with dogs out walking. Chat soon from Banjo the ratbag rescue.
07.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK......TIE YOUR DOG UP WHEN IT'S RIDING ON THE BACK OF THE UTE. I can't believe how many people still don't tie their dog up when travelling on the ute. Apart from being something you are not allowed to do, it's potentially a very dangerous situation. Nobody believes an accident will happen to them, but if you've seen some of the horrendous injuries dogs have suffered falling off utes or being hit by passing cars, then you'd think twice about tying your dog up. ...Vet bills aren't cheap, a lot of money can be saved by taking a simple precaution, not too mention how upset vets get seeing injuries that could be prevented. Think twice and keep your dog safe.
07.01.2022 Merry Christmas
06.01.2022 BOARDING KENNELS VERSUS HOME CARE, WHICH ONE? Tough question, but what it often comes down to is facilities, level of care and experience. Many people think it's nicer for their pet to be left with someone they know rather than use a boarding kennel. An advantage of a professional kennel, which should not be overlooked is insurance, does a friend have this if something happens to your dog, or will they accept responsibility if your dog gets out and ends up in the pound, proba...bly not. If this happens and your dog is not claimed, it could easily end up rehomed, totally distressing to imagine. Many feel that kennels keep dogs shut up nearly all day, but if you choose a good one, they will have a kennel area, day yards and exercise facilities. Another advantage is the company of other dogs, so they settle down quickly with company around. Most quality kennels will also exercise your dog if required, and exceptional ones offer training facilities. Before you make a decision check out what's on offer, and put your pet first, rather than what you think he may need. Remember also professionals also know how to handle any veterinary situations that may arise.
05.01.2022 FASHION ACCESSORIES FOR DOGS, NECESSSARY? Lots of people love dressing their dogs up these days, and everyone thinks they look lovely but we do it more for us than for them. Some breeds really feel the cold and need warm coats for winter, especially small dogs or those with very little coat. Others find all the humanised clothing really uncomfortable making them feel hot, which in turn is not good for their skin and needs to breathe. Before you start spending money on clothes you think you'd like your dog to have. first ask yourself what the dog really needs.
05.01.2022 CHRISTMAS RECESS.. WITH EVERYONE BEING SO BUSY SOME TIME OFF IS NEEDED. Dogs In Action will start up again after Christmas, dates will be on the site.
03.01.2022 BANJO SAYS....I LOVE TRAINING I know I'm never going to be a competition dog, but what does that matter. I'm now really good around other dogs and easy for my owners to manage. I'm so much more relaxed now that I actually enjoy both being with, and working with other dogs. The only reason this has happened is because my owners decided to accept a training regime and stick with. Unacceptable behaviour wasn't bad one day and okay the next, they stuck to their guns and made su...re I stuck with the programme. I'm glad they did. I think my life is much more enjoyable, and I know I feel a lot more secure with strong guidelines. I can't believe what we've learnt to do, so much more than basic obedience. I now do sit stays, drop stays and recalls. Who'd have thought anyone could walk off and leave me with other dogs a few months ago, that's what training does for you. I'm a model canine citizen now, should be an award for that.
03.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK...SECURE YOUR DOG WHEN TRAVELLING. It may look cute driving along with your dog's head hanging out the window, but an unsecured dog is at risk if you have an accident. Car harnesses for dogs are so easy to obtain now, you don't have to have the most expensive. Give yourself some peace of mind, and make you dog safe while travelling with a suitable restraint.
02.01.2022 Do we still have those, something you don't really notice.
01.01.2022 QUESTION OF THE WEEK....HOW HARD DO I HAVE TO WORK TO TRAIN MY DOG? It isn't a question of how hard, rather one of being consistent. If you only have a few minutes a day, then it's better to work for short periods on a regular basis instead of one long session on a weekend. Dogs lose concentration after a while, and no amount of repetition will make them better. So don't work harder, work smarter as they say. Short bursts of training on a regular basis will really pay off.
