23.01.2022 Heirloom cutlery! This is part of the set of cutlery my parents received as a wedding present in 1939. I remember the large box lined with green flannel in which it was kept. The box did not come with us to Australia but the cutlery did! The mark on the back of each piece states: Gero Zilmeta, indicating the factory where it was made. The design is Art Deco and was called variously delta hamerslag, Franse lelie (French lily) or Kruidnagel (clove). It was produced from 1931 to... 1954. There were serving spoons for soup, vegetables, potatoes and gravy, as well as spoons, forks and teaspoons. The knife is the only one surviving; the handles on all the others broke decades ago. When I acquired the remains of the set 12 years ago, most of the forks and spoons were missing; they'd probably ended up in my parents' rubbish bin or compost heap. That year I went to the Netherlands to celebrate Christmas with my aunt. The weather was freezing, so to warm up I went for wanders around the village. Close by I found a large kringloop (op shop). It was a treasure trove... Among the household goods I was delighted to find some Zilmeta forks and spoons: they were exactly the same as mine! I paid over my four euros for the two bundles and brought them back to Australia. My set was complete! Apart from a bit of wear and tear, the cutlery is still as good as new and I use it every day.
